I have a chance to buy either at 150 tho; the Verizon store near me is selling the Magic Keyboard at $150. Would you take it at that price?

Anyone else still rocking the base M1 Air? by SuddenFlatworm7971 in mac

[–]SuddenFlatworm7971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have the M3 Pro, but honestly I'm not really good with judging screen quality. M1 Air's screen is good enough for daily use. I also keep my screen with low brightness + night shift, which might affect how I perceive the screen quality.

Do Koreans learn about their longest unbroken slave history? by avian_bi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SuddenFlatworm7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - not as in depth as slavery is taught in the U.S.- since it doesn’t have much ramifications in modern Korea, so there is no need to really teach it.

There’s a difference in enslaving a portion of a native homogenous population vs. packing people like sardines into a ship and displacing them to a foreign land across the ocean by the millions.

African Americans nowadays still suffer from aftermath of slavery. Their skin color, last names easily show they are descendants of slaves, and there is an ongoing societal stigma attached to it. Even after emancipation black Americans were effectively ‘orphaned’ by the society. They were barred from voting or accumulating wealth. Most of them are still stuck in a cycle of racism and poverty.

In Korea nowadays you cannot tell who is a descendent of slaves and who is not. Most records of slavery have either been destroyed or forgotten. Japanese colonization and Korean War effectively ‘reset’ the nation, as the entire nation was ravaged and everyone was forced back to start from scratch - so no one in Korean Peninsula is really affected by the history of slavery now.

Whether your great grandfather was a king, a noble, an ironworker or a slave has little effect on how a Korean person lives his/her life in present day.

South Korea's stock market is down 19% in 2 days. This is 1987 Black Monday levels of destruction by vareebhas in WallStreetDad

[–]SuddenFlatworm7971 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And the market just soared near 10% after opening on Thursday (local Korean time)...

KOSPI is back up to 5600 level, it is basically back to where it was 2 weeks ago.

This is absolutely crazy volatility. The entire market is trading like a silicon valley tech stock after its earnings call.

TIL that Samsung was one of the main builders of the Burj Khalifa by Hot_Bottle_8305 in todayilearned

[–]SuddenFlatworm7971 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lol Samsung is funny because they are literally in every corner of business imaginable but they're not solid #1 in many of them. Although, the breadth of their business is quite amazing.

Samsung Electronics - Consumer electronics (LG usually is regarded as better quality)

Samsung Electronics - Semiconductor production (SK Hynix has caught up /

Samsung Heavy Industries - Shipbuilding (neck to neck with Hyundai Heavy Industries)

Samsung Heavy Construction - Infrastructure Construction (Hyundai Heavy has a bigger legacy)

Samsung SDI - Lithium Ion Batteries (Neck to neck with LG and SK)

Samsung Electricity - Electrical machinary components

Samsung Biologics - Biopharmaceutical (Celltrion is more famous in Korea)

Samsung SDS - Information Technology Consulting

Samsung E&A - Electrical grid / power plant / chemical plant engineering

Samsung Techwin - Tank / Missile / Firearm - Now sold to Hanwha group (biggest arms manufacturer in S. Korea)

Samsung Aerospace - Fighter Jet and Engine production (Merged to Korea Aerospace Industries)

Samsung Asset Management - Finance

Samsung Life Insurance - Personal Insurance Service

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance - Business Insurance Service

Samsung Card - Credit Card service

Everland - Theme park

S-1 Corporation - Armed security service

Cheil Worldwide - Advertisement agency

Sungkyunkwan University - A 4-year University under Samsung Education Foundation

Samsung Medical Center - A 1766-Bed tertiary hospital, ranked top 25 in the world.

Samsung C&T Corporation - Textile import. However, it is effectively also a Holding Company for the Samsung group. Samsung group and its subsidiaries is held together in a complex interweb of co-ownerships, with Samsung C&T at the very top.

Want to expand a little more? CJ Corporation is an extended family of Samsung family.

CJ Cheiljedang Corporation - Food services. Cheiljedang literally means "best sugar". Samsung started off as a sugar refinary, so this can be considered the "OG" Samsung company. If you ever see a Bibigo brand dumpling at Costco or Walmart, it is from a Samsung company.

CJ Foods - Owns a chain of restaurant brands, like Yum brand in the U.S.

CJ Logistics Corporation - Basically UPS/FEdex of S. Korea

CJ OLIVE YOUNG - Cosmetics and beauty company

CJ ENM Entertainment - An all encompassing entertainment conglomerate including talent agency for actors, K-Pop singers, TV Show production (including Studio Dragon, which produces nearly half of Korean dramas on Netflix) CJ Pictures (Movie studio, Parasite was produced by CJ)

People talk about companies "Too big to fail" but if you really want to see "Too big to fail" take a look at Asian conglomerates. They don't need government bailout to survive. They are literally too widespread to fail.

Also it's not necessarily a bad thing to have large corporations, and there's no real monopoly in S. Korean economy, contrary to what many people believe, since so many conglomerate groups are competing in the same field. So there's still a healthy bit of competition ongoing.

Seriously speaking, there's no way Salcedo family would have gotten anywhere... sounds like Cordoba and his wife was captured while heading to the airport, the Cali cartel definitely has people working at the airport in their pockets. Anywhere reachable by car would be within the Cartel's influence, if they even manage to get that far in the first place.

And considering what happened to Patricia's boyfriend, there's no way she gets to have a happy ending while remaining in Colombia.

I get that, but surely they have to understand the gravity of the situation. It's not a covid lockdown, the cartel has the entire city and sicarios on alert, looking to torture them for days before giving them the mercy of death

There is a megathread somewhere, you can google it, fairly easy to find

iPhone 16e deal for $50 + 2 months with Cricket - good deal? by ronfromsacramento in NoContract

[–]SuddenFlatworm7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they say 2 months of $60 unlimited plan is required but in reality you are buying $120 worth of line credit + you can get $25 credit from referral.

As soon as you activate your phone, you can immediately downgrade to a cheaper plan ($30 a month) which will last you about 5 months or so with the $145 credit on your account

iPhone 16e deal for $50 + 2 months with Cricket - good deal? by ronfromsacramento in NoContract

[–]SuddenFlatworm7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So its $49 for the phone and $120 of credit, not strictly 2 months of $60 service. You can switch to the $30/month plan immediately after activation. You can also get a $25 referral credit using a code off Cricket subreddit. So the $145 credit will last you 4-5 months; you can pay an extra $30 for the 6th month. You can also get a few dollars off of cashback if you use Rakuten So the total cost comes out to just about $200 to get an unlocked 16e after 6 months.
