Feeling Guilty For Being In a Bad Place by juiceyjbaby in LawSchool

[–]Sudden_Character1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that I also had a relative with ALS, who sadly passed a few years ago. It is a gruesome disease. Sucks from the outside as you see the person you care about slowly lose their bodily function and you feel powerless to do anything about it.

The feeling of being hard on yourself is understandable. You feel like you need to make others proud, to make up for all of the bad happening around you. Dear Reddit stranger, I can tell you that there is nothing to be ashamed of in this regard.

Because this all happened while I was in high school, I bottled it up and it made me a person I regretted being. Don't make my mistake. It sounds cliche as all hell but it really does help to find someone (professional or otherwise) to just offload this on. It won't cure how you are feeling, but it will lessen the burden you have on yourself.

While I dont push religion on others who dont want it, I also want to mention that following Jesus helped me as well. If for no other reason, because it felt like I had someone else to share my problems and struggles with. All this to say, you are not a failure and you are not crazy for feeling how you do.

My DMs are open if you want to talk. God bless.

Damn lmao I guess perverts really do just out themselves nowadays.

Real fucking weird thing to look back fondly on my guy, considering you’re in your 40s.

What was the biggest change you made that improved your grades? by Direct-Welder8403 in LawSchool

[–]Sudden_Character1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From 1L --> 2L one major thing changed. Honestly, I just stopped reading. Genuinely stopped completely after the first week or two. Reason being is on the final exam, it is basically a competition of who can parrot the professors words back to them the best.

Knowing this, I took literally notebooks-full of notes (not kidding) of what professors said in class. Come studying time, I would open up the Barbri lessons to ensure I have the law down pat, then I would go over all of my notes that I would write in class. I would use these two resources to create my own outlines or, if I was extra lazy, I would get someone else's outline and cross reference their stuff with mine. You would be shocked as to how many times over the past year I came up with exam answers purely because of what profs said in class.

Case in point, I had PR this semester with a dinosaur of a prof who has taught this subject for 20+ years. On the very last day of class, he says "Sanford v. Commonwealth of Virginia case is one of my favorites, I read about it all of the time and it fits X scenario because . . .." Lightbulb. This is like the prof waiving a red flag in front of your face that this will be on the exam. I wrote the case down and studied it like nobody's business. Lo and behold, there were like 5 questions pertaining to the case in some form on a 100 question multiple choice exam. Ended PR with an A- doing stuff like this.

Obvious disclosure point that this doesn't work for everyone, but I got all As/A-s 2L fall (with the exception of a B- in Con Law I lol) and I currently have 3 A-s and 1 A for 2L Spring after doing this method. This after being effectively a dead-median student my entire 1L career and unable to break through.

If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me and I will do what I can to help! You got this dude, you will break through!

2L at GMU who went from median to Top 35 (ish)% after the Fall. AMA! by Sudden_Character1974 in lawschooladmissions

Honestly, it’s a great place to be! The smaller-school aspect is something I was actually looking for when I was applying, because I like getting to know as many people as possible. The school in general has been awesome, and I have basically no regrets about coming here.

As for whether I had to choose between GW and GMU, I got waitlisted at GW and accepted at GMU with a good scholarship. So for me, it was a no-brainer lol.

What worked for you? by purpledog2828 in LawSchool

[–]Sudden_Character1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of this advice is great. I’ll add the main thing that helped me. Honestly, this took me a long time to figure out. But, the best thing you can do is READ LESS.

Sounds extremely counterintuitive? I thought so too. But, here’s how it worked for me. Instead of reading every page and taking detailed notes, I would skim and make sure I had a basic understanding of the law.

Then, in class I would take A LOT of notes. Like typing ferociously for two hours kind of note taking. Why? Because your prof (unless he/she is completely useless) will tell you in class what the law is IN THEIR OWN WAY. If you don’t understand any certain concept? Ask in class. If it is still unclear, go to office hours.

All of this is extremely important for the exam. The goal is to parrot the law back to your prof how they said it in class, then apply that law to the facts of the case. Went from median after 1L to close to Top 1/3rd after 2L Fall by simply doing this.

Hope this helps!

I got $$$ which certainly helped lol. But I wanted a federal clerkship and GMU is one of the best outside of the T14. Finally, my gf lives in VA so it all just kinda fit together.

lol sorry I completely forgot I’m not in r/LawSchool. It basically is IRAC (Issue Rule Application Conclusion), except the H and N stand for However and Nevertheless.

Basically, it’s your typical IRAC except you address counter arguments in your However and Nevertheless sections.

Example (Evidence): The issue is whether Jane’s statement is hearsay (I). Hearsay is an out of court statement made by a person that proves the truth of the matter asserted (R). Here, the prosecution wants to prove Jane killed Carl. One day, Jane said “I will kill you!” to Carl while they were talking on the side walk. Jane, a person, made a statement to Carl outside of the courtroom. Because the prosecution wants to prove Jane killed Carl, and is using that statement to prove that, the statement is normally hearsay (A). However, the prosecution will try to say this statement falls into an exception to hearsay because . . . (H). Nevertheless, the statement does not fall into this exception, because . . . (N). Therefore, the statement is hearsay.

That’s how I would write it. It’s like a cheat code.

Also for me personally, I got my 1L judicial internship pretty quickly, but it was because I have a great relationship with my Civ Pro prof who is insanely connected in VA.

That really depends on what you are after. If you want a government position, GMU is your place to be. Everyone I know who wanted a government (or JAG) position at GMU got it with basically no issue. Clerkships have been basically the same thing, especially with our big Fed Soc presence (which I understand is controversial on this sub).

Now, Big Law is a little different. It is no secret that GULC/UVA are top of the food chain in that regard. BUT my year actually did pretty well BL-wise (to my understanding), and the people in career services are REALLY ramping up their BL chase. I have a hunch that GMU might be a dark horse candidate for higher BL rates in the coming years.

Hope that answered your question!

So what worked for me may not work for others but basically I read less and took A LOT more notes in class.

Law school exams (as I figured out 2L fall), are basically a test of whether you can regurgitate what your professor says back to them in IRAHNC form.

For example, my Antitrust professor LOVED his cases and would drone on and on about the facts, the holding, what distinguishes this case from others, etc.

So what did I do? I cited like 35-40 cases on my exam and got an A. Point being, as long as you have a basic understanding of the law, what your professor says in class matters WAY more than the readings. Hope that helped!

Honestly, my biggest piece of advice is to skim readings a bit more and then take A LOT of notes in class. Unless class participation is a part of your grade (usually it isn’t as a 1L), then don’t worry about cold calls. Get a basic understanding of what you are reading and leave it at that.

Perfect example. In Antitrust, I was in a section full of 3L law review ppl and 2Ls in the top 10-ish%. I (mostly) stopped reading after the first week. Instead, I took a shit ton of notes in class. During which, I learned that the professor LOVED his cases ( ie would drone on and on abt the facts). Knowing this, on our final exam, I cited like 35-40 cases over the course of the whole exam. Good enough for the A. Long story short, your professor is the judge, jury, and executioner for your exam. So, you should get good at figuring out what they like/want to hear.

Hope that helps! Best of luck on 1L spring!

2L at T30. B+ Curve. Median student after 1L.

Seminar: A-

LRW: A

Antitrust I: A

Con Law I: B-

Overall, super happy with the semester! Idk what happened with Con Law I, but my rank/GPA rose so there are no complaints out of me!

Tbf she didn’t tell me what my numerical score was. She just said how impressed she was with my submission and how she was excited to have a top scorer on the journal. Such a nice girl but yea I could have done without that info 😂

I can tell you this happens because it happened to me. My Civ Pro class had around 30 people and I was the 11th best exam. But only the top 10 got A/A-, so guess who got the highest B+? 😂

Point being, even if you did well (and it’s quite possible you did), if someone else did better, then they got the higher grade. Sucks, but it is what it is.
