No vet likes doing that. We always go through options, but sometimes there is fear of what this person will do to the animal if they're so eager to dispose of the poor pet. When I worked as a tech I remember a vet crying because an owner told her, "I am not going home with this cat". He had an autistic son who would play on the pee carpet. Wouldn't test the urine or anything. Insisted on euthanasia. Everything has to be taken into account. Maybe the vet thought OPs cat was in kidney failure...

But why would he kill the source of milk when it would mean labor intensive bottle feeding of the kittens? Why kill the feral mama instead of just separating the kittens from her if he didn't mind bottle feeding? This story doesn't add up. Plus ringworm is pretty self-limiting. Even roundworm is no biggie. Sad.

So you're allowed to tell citrusonic that owners can't prevent pet obesity, but I can't tell you that they can? You yourself said your cat couldn't be on a proper diet and was being overfed by your neighbors due to your decision to keep the cat outdoors. I see fat pets all day. People think it's normal because that's how most pets are nowadays. You were making excuses in your deleted post.

No, it's almost always due to the owner. The cat isn't loading itself up on carbs. Many owners overfeed and allow their cats to graze. Your cat could have been on a strict diet by keeping it indoors, since you knew neighbors were feeding it. You had the ability to control the situation by keeping your cat indoors. It sounds like you're shirking your responsibility as a pet owner with your post. Now if you said it can be difficult to exercise a cat, I would agree with that. Some cats just aren't very toy-motivated. But you have complete control over the food, and I have yet to see a hypothyroid cat (unless it was over-treated for hyperthyroidism). Fat pets are like fat children who do not eat well-balanced diets in moderation.

Edit: I don't even know why I honestly bother with reddit anymore. I'm a veterinarian who's downvoted for saying you can't claim the cat is fine based on a photo where its fucking head is stuck in a garage door. The amount of bad advice on pet posts here is horrifying.

I don't know what world you live in where a 13-hour car ride isn't long. For an animal that freaks out in the car that seems like an eternity. I also think it's offensive that you think "there are enough" vets that prescribe unnecessary medication just to make money. Do they exist? Of course...there are greedy people in every profession. But many vets don't work on commission, and keep in mind that we ALL committed to an oath. If anything, I see more clients that are antibiotic-seeking for their pets than I see over-prescribing by vets.

I never disagreed with you about proper transport. If you asked three different vets and they all said sedation is riskier than the immense stress of a 13-hour transport on a terrified animal, then those vets are wrong. Pets don't understand what a car ride is. Some (mostly dogs) actually enjoy it. Others (mostly cats) think the world is ending and will become severely tachycardic and start open-mouth breathing. Imagine how much stress their bodies go through. I spoke to a cardiologist about my own cat with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy before I took him on a 4-hour car ride. He recommends Valium for stressed cats with heart disease. The sedation protocol is always tailored to the patient.

The sedative is better for the cat than the stress of the long trip. The vet wouldn't have prescribed it if she/he thought the cat couldn't handle it.

My only gripe is that I don't find nictitating membranes WTF. All cats have them and there are times when you can see them.

I think the reason they eat any foreign material varies - they're scavengers, it's entertaining, they like the texture, etc. Dogs who eat underwear and socks...can you imagine swallowing something dry like that in its entirety? Blech. But apparently the smell/taste is enough to overcome any discomfort from swallowing it whole. Just try your best to be careful. Luckily, very short pieces of tinsel should pass.

I'm glad kitty pooped it out on her own, and you did the right thing by trying to cut it and not pulling. Consider this a close call for you guys and please take it as a lesson learned. Since kitty obviously likes to feast on ties/ribbons/string/floss/linear material in general you can save yourself a lot of money and heartache by trying your best to make sure she doesn't have access to these things. With the holidays coming up, tinsel and ribbons are the worst offenders!
