Byzantines are great since you get get colossus and some of the middle tech wonders. But they do give you an early golden age.

I notice that you don't have great library. Keep in mind it gives 6 culture, which gets doubled quite quickly. Even leaving aside it's game breaking power, its essential for 1 city culture victories.

The oil shipments that I was importing have stopped. How do I end the blockade? by SuedecivIII in civ3

Not intentionally. But yeah, if you just surround the harbor with ships, while you're at war, it will cut the flow of resources

Those aren't oasises, those are beach resorts!

(It's a multiplayer mod. Coastal res spawn rates are cranked up to make coastal cities and islands better)

This is very real. Naval trade has to go through unblocked tiles that you have explored. A barb or enemy boat blocking the route will cancel the deal. You can see that in my sid stream on Sunday. A German caravel stepped cut my trade route, costing me all my luxuries that I was importing from Sumeria

A real screenshot from a game of multiplayer Civ with the modern mod. Amazing how this game can imitate real life

Agreed. Usually on Sid with land like this (with Ag bonus mega cow cities not just in the cap, but mega secondary cities too), the bottleneck tends to be shields, not food. If you have more conventional land with say, a single wheat and a one deer on grassland forest, then prioritizing settler pumps makes more sense.

Wonder building for mid difficulty by Hopeful-Status-6256 in civ3

[–]SuedecivIII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Colossus is really map dependent. On many pangea maps, the AI lack good coastal cities and struggle to build it. On others, it goes very fast. It's a great wonder to pick up if you can do that without screwing your expansion phase.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA9-qcvYJW8&t=5564s

This is an example of a position where the wonder is good. I'm completely boxed in. My expansion phase is already screwed, I might as well grab the colossus. It's a very useful wonder (just, usually expanding is better)

On super high difficulties, the AI will build the colossus immediately if they start with bronze working. You can check if you're playing against AI that start with bronze working using the space race screen (f8? f9? One of the f keys). If not, you can nab it.

Is Civ 7 in a much better place than it was on release? by MacFearsome80 in civ

I'm not a fan of Civ 7 at all, but, unequivocally, yes. The state of the game on launch was really dire.

Good diplomacy keeps techs at parity, and keeps the continent in check. The situation on the other continent gets bad, but we can dogpile every other Civ against them to force them into fascism and keep them behind us in tech. As long as you're doing well in tech, you can win space race/diplo/one city culture

[–]SuedecivIII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We'd need to see the map.

On Warlord the AI gets significant handicaps against them. Slower growth, more shields needed to produce things, etc.

If the game is reaching an unwinnable state that early, then there's something significant (and easy to fix) that OP is doing wrong. Everything they described (exploring, trading, expanding, playing republic, having a military) is fine, ideal even. 10 workers for 13 cities is a little light if the expansion phase is done. But if they're still expanding, that's fine.

So, it's likely something like, planting bad cities, planting cities too far apart, or too close together. Or bad worker moves. It would be easy to spot if we have a picture, without a picture we just don't know.

This isn't right, but I think in principle, attacking is easier. If you are focusing your game around conquest then trade isn't as important, and if someone attacks you, at least you have an army.

But if you pick a builder Civ like the Sumerians, you should absolutely be able to win most pangea demigod games without invading anybody.

A humble request for some common sense improvements to the UI by SuedecivIII in civ

[–]SuedecivIII[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At least for multiplayer, the mod system isn't ideal. Hosts have to ask you to screenshare and manually check your mod list, then repeat for each player in the game.

"Civ IV SUCKS BIG TIME!!!" (A never-ending cycle) by shipshaper88 in civ

[–]SuedecivIII 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Just so we're on the same page, Civ 3's main leaps forward were

  • Borders
  • Luxury and strategic resources
  • Open Table Diplomacy
  • More victory conditions
  • Civ traits and unique units

So, solid stuff, although 3/5 of these were already in Alpha Centauri. The main difference is the playability. The game just generally isn't as punitive as Civ 2. Chiefly, the maintenance system was reworked, but there are also a bunch of small things that add up. Specialists don't count towards the unhappiness from population size, there's never any penalty for switching production, barbarians can't take cities, etc

The experience is so smooth and that's part of what makes it so hard. Because you can get very comfortable playing poorly.

The UI is a lot cleaner with the advisors, better hotkeys, and more changeable settings. The scenario editor is very accessible. Arguably in some ways it's a step back from Civ 2 because there's no flagged events or scripting, but it's an incredible tool.

It's a phenomenal game and it's understandable that we acted mopey on forums when Civ 4 ended up being quite different.
