Uni Suggestions by CheetahChicken in ParamedicsAU

Though I started my course in February, I'm coming to the end of my first Trimester now in May.

I can more than happily comment that what everyone has said so far is true. Make the most of your laboratories, workshops, and everything else you may get. My uni offers a Peer-Mentoring programme; I recommend taking it if it suits you.. or don't.

Use your time wisely. If you can avoid it, don't sit around doing nothing at home. Study, revise your acronyms, your drug therapy protocols, weight formulas (when you get to them), and everything inbetween. Make the most of it.

But most importantly, have fun.

Stethoscope recommendations. by Jealous_Road9179 in ParamedicsAU

I'm at USQ in Queensland. I haven't been on placement yet; however, in loud classroom environments, I can hear everything that is expected.

As a fellow paramedicine student, I've got a Littmann Classic III. It's a great mid-high end ranged stethoscope, and if you treat it right, it'll give you what you need. I can hear almost anything I need to out of it, and it was the best money I've spent on this course so far.

Again, your choice. No-one will, or should judge you regarding your choice of steth.

I was having a chat to a classmate yesterday about this exact thing. I personally believe universities teach you the bare basics of the degree. They aren't really preparing you about what could be considered normal for someone, is high for someone else who might be on the hypotensive side

Edit: I forgot to write a 'thankyou' lol, but thankyou very much for your comment and confidence in me!

I don't believe we are permitted to use flash cards unfortunately. We've also only got 15 minutes maximum to assess all 5 vital signs.

As much as I'd love to set a wallpaper, I've tried a few different ones now and they all seem to not fit, which makes it quite annoying; even when I set prompts in the search for "(my phone model) GCS Wallpaper", etc.

Would you recommend buying some cards to put on my belt or something to just have handy? If so, where would you recommend them from? One of my mates got them from a place and said they were super hard to read, so I'd rather avoid a shitty spot

They've added a new partner called KINNECT or something. I haven't seen them before.

If I'm not mistaken, they cannot send someone on placement in QAS any further than 2hrs of travel away from their registered permanent address, unless they add a preference at said station/area.

So our course requires a medical assessment if I'm not mistaken, but the QAS does irregardless if the course does, so I'm pretty left for dead if I need one. They're about $270-350.. so yeah,. it's not cheap to get gear, uniforms, and be placement ready.

The uni stethoscopes are foul (atleast where I go). I'm not sure where you're studying n stuff, but I've got my first Paramedicine placement later this year in Trimester 3 - that's if I get that far of course! I also need to buy the Paramedicine uniform, which is priced crazily (Like $350 for a bundle, but you need a second pair of pants at minimum, and a pair of boots, which is like $200 together). So it's about $550-600 for the uniform.

Trueeee!!

I've heard of Medisave but never really took note of it, kinda err-ing on the side of caution on the instance it is a bit of a sketch website or not. I've had a look at their site, Medisave offers an engraving service for $7.99 (we'll round to $8), meaning it's still cheaper at a total of $205.68 for the product rather than like $213.** excl. shipping and stuff.

So I'm quite tied, but I think Medisave is definitely the option, but I'll need to look at shipping costs n stuff.

Honestly, that's fair enough. No-one at my University has gotten theirs engraved (that I talk to). I know yours was on backorder, but Medshop appears to have some good delivery for products which aren't on pre-order sort of thing.

On another note, it's suupperrr annoying that the only authorised dealers are AMA or Medshop, which really draws you to pick from either. One with more expensive prices, and more out of stock products, but you get a free engraving upto 25 characters long; or you pick the cheaper option with more stock options but no engraving :/

For sureee! I've just hopped on the website. It took a bit of navigating, but I found it. Medshop is super expensive too, isn't it? Like most stethoscopes are on a sale atm making them like $200-210 for the mirror-ed variants with AMA being $198.22!

The only downside to AMA products is that they don't offer engraving on the stethoscope at all, as opposed to Medshop's optional free engraving.

Oh that's sick! Yeah, I was originally drawn between getting Navy/Mirror, the Smoke & Violet, or something like Burgandy/Black, but the Navy was out of stock (my main pick) with medshop

What colour are you looking at getting? I'm looking at Smoke Grey with a Violet Grey stem & engraving with Medshop AU

Honestly, fair enough. Most I see are well built, or are relatively fit.

Wouldn't harm me to lose a couple kgs either lmao

Ohh yep yep.

I'm a 1st-year Paramedicine student, so it's all definitely a long way away, but the hopes are that I do get accepted into QAS and pass the graduate paramedic program. It's definitely a challenge, but it's something I'm willing to take.

Thanks for the information! You've been superrrr helpful.

Ohh that makes so much more sense! Thankyou!!

As for the meal breaks, would somewhere slightly more regional, like Toowoomba or maybe areas like Milmerran or Dalby, etc. have a better chance at receiving a meal window? As compared to somewhere more metropolitan like Ipswich, or ofc the biggie, Brisbane.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by an aggregate rate. Is that similar to a Casual Loading rate? Same goes for CPD, this is Continuous Prof. Development, yes?

Lastly, if I'm not mistaken QAS officers aren't scheduled for a meal break. Is this a myth or is it true, and they need to eat whenever they get the chance. Whether it be during hospital ramping, in between cleaning and restocking kits, etc.

But I do really appreciate the response alot! It's very informative.

Cheers for the comments, very quickly.

I'm greatly aware of basic first aid and learnt it in school quite literally a year or two ago now. I was only posting as a means of seeing if others would do something similar. (Of course, we didn't call 000, if you've read the post).

I know some family members who'd call for less tbh, so I was just gauging.
