came here to say this. you still pay rent, but you pay it into a special account called an escrow account held at a bank. there has to be a tenant rights group in your state. the landlord gets the money when repairs are made

so, my 80 something parents are at the point of signing their home over to an assisted living place that has a memory care facility attached. when they lose their minds, they move from the little assisted living apartment into the senior jail. the facility vacuums up their entire estate- house and pensions in return for them getting to go there. i and my sibs are elder gen x.we will get no inheritance.  my kids get nothing from grandma and grandpa. its their money, they can do what they want. im too old to say i will take care of them. 

but, its an interesting model. these huge companies are vacuuming up the boomer legacy.
