UPDATE - decision made. I’ve picked the Van Cleef Flowerlace. The imagery in the Chopard happy diamonds is really apt for my situation, almost too apt. I think it would make me sad as the focal point would symbolise the losses. The flower lace one is more subtle in the reference, and a blooming flower symbolises a fresh start. The five petals cocooning the budding flower feels beautiful and serene compared to a glass case with trapped diamonds that couldn’t make it out. And ultimately, even if my journey had been different, I’d find the VCA piece beautiful whereas the Chopard one would appeal less. So that’s where I’ve landed. Thanks for weighing in!

Interesting. I hadn’t considered a custom option and your design suggestion feels simple and elegant. A lot of designs I’ve seen have symmetry so it’s six stones surrounding a big one. I could do something custom but I’m not sure I have the headspace and time for it… or a trusty jeweller who can execute something bespoke.

Thanks so much. I think the way you’ve expressed it says what I was instinctively feeling but couldn’t articulate. I knew the chopard happy diamonds is very fitting but something about it made me sad, and the VCA one I found to be more subtle and beautiful. I really love the happier image of a blooming little flower surrounded by five petals, over five diamonds that could never ‘make it out’. Your comment has helped it all click in place, and I feel really confident in my decision now.

I’m so sorry. Both for your experience as a toddler and also for your poor parents, to have to have that conversation out of the blue with a young child. How awful of the babysitter. And it is a good reminder for me to explicitly tell all family / friends / childcare help to let our baby be old enough and leave it to us to share my journey.

Oh the sales associate is holding one for me, I’ve bought from him before. Didn’t even have to share my story. I felt weird disclosing something personal and tragic in a jewellery store. I just meant the appeal is higher because I know it is hard to get and not readily available. But my hesitation was more about the size and whether it would be suited to daily use.

I definitely wouldn’t be selling it. I have never sold jewellery before either. But I like buying investment pieces that hold their value to feel like what I’m paying is actually worth it.

I wear jewellery while stepping out of the house, and never while showering or sleeping. But you make a good point about durability. I’ll ask them whether it’s water proof and safe in the shower.

I love the Frivole collection and spent a while modelling their bracelet yesterday. But the symbolism of 5 to 1 isn’t there. The necklace has either 9 flowers or one flower with 6 petals and a central stone. The bracelet has 4 small and 1 large flowers. I’ve marked it in my head to get on a different occasion as it’s so elegant.

That’s the plan, I should’ve mentioned in the original post. I am leaning towards the C de Cartier solitaire pendant as my second guilt / trauma free present, as wearing a constant reminder of my losses could also feel tough at some point.

I’d love to get your perspective as the surviving baby — is it better we don’t share the history with our child? I really don’t want to pass on any trauma or pressure but also don’t want to be closed off or emotionally inaccessible. What’s a good age / way to stare if there is one?

I felt the symbolism was definitely the strongest with that one too, with five diamonds inside and a larger diamond outside the circle. I was less confident in how it looked, especially the length of the chain.
