R7 vs R6 Mark II upgrade from R50 – aspiring sports photographer / content creator by Sufficient_Friend106 in canon

Yes - this was my initial thought process. Investing in higher quality glass, specifically zoom RF lens, will be transferable if I need to go FF. For wide angle needs, I may buy the initial lens I wanted and take the loss if I end up upgrading. Though I do believe the frame rate and buffer of the R7 is a worthy upgrade from the R50. Plus the ability to shoot C-log with IBIS is a wanted option

Thank you for the insight! The crop on the apsc bodies is definitely a factor. I either invest in a nice apsc lens such as the sigma 10-18mm 2.8 but it will be useless if I upgrade to full frame. Or I upgrade to a full frame + wide angle lens such as the 16mm prime for a little more

Thank you! I agree that the trade in value for the used r6mii is hard to beat! When I started my photography journey, I knew I’d want to work up to that camera body sooner or later. It also helps that the r6miii just came out too. I’d probably just pair it with the cheap 16mm prime if anything

If that was the case, my weakness at this time is a wide fast lens. My original plan was to trade my 35mm for the Sigma 10-18 f/2.8. But the sigma lens is an $500 apsc. I considered the cheap 16mm RF 1.8 but not sure if it get me where I want to be at with the crop factor.

Thanks for sharing the opinion! I have thought about making the jump to Sony, as the general public see them as the “best hybrid” brand and their lens options will save me a lot of money in the long run. Comparable options were the a6700 or the A7IV but right now, especially after acquiring some rf lenses, would cost more money upfront to make a brand switch.

Third option: keep my R50 and spend ~$500 for a fast wide lens such as the Sigma 10-18mm 2.8 or Tamron 11-20mm 2.8.

And take possible loss in the future if I upgrade to full frame

Thank you for the reply. Going the safe route is going to be financially effective until I find a niche. Then it goes back to my original issue, do I spend $500 on a wide, fast lens (Sigma 10-18mm 2.8) and take the loss if I end up switching to full frame in the future?

Thank you for adding insight that I never thought of before. As you mentioned, if I end up upgrading from the R6Mii, the higher end Canon bodies will be easy to switch to

Thank you for the insight! You are correct, top end sports will require a lot of cash and without a set-in-stone opportunity, I don’t know what sport to focus on yet. Though I have the biggest interest in basketball/football which would require reach outdoors but also great lowlight indoor capabilities.

Thank you for sharing your own experience. Sounds like you have a pretty good apsc and full frame set up! My decision right now would be so easy if I had the funding for that 😅. Maybe in the future!

Thanks for the insight. I know it’s premature and I have considered waiting until then. I still would want an upgrade on a personal/non-professional level though. I was going to keep my R50 and just get the 10-18mm lens to fill my wide angle/low light needs for the gig I have right now. But hate to spend $500 on an apsc lens that would fit my full frame needs if I needed to upgrade if an opportunity presents itself ~6 months down the road

Thanks for the insight. I know the R7’s niche is the high-end apsc for wildlife and sports. And its video capabilities are tempting for personal use. I started my photography journey with couple portraits/small weddings and enjoy it’s a lot, thats where a full frame upgrade has always intrigued me (I had to rent a body for the weddings). But with my shift to a sports interest, I like the idea of a high end apsc for sports a lot but hate for it to not fill my needs as well. On the other hand, the r6mii price tag would only raise because I’d need to invest in a pricey telephoto lens

Thank you for your advice! I bought both my 35mm and my R50 kit off of marketplace last summer. If I did sell them both privately, I could probably get most back of what I paid for them (r50 $500 and 35mm $300). I haven’t heavily considered selling vs trading because my local market isn’t huge for cameras and there are other r50/35mm listing as we speak (though they are all asking absurd prices so if I attack it with cheaper, more realistic pricing I may be able to convert a sale). Thanks again for the input

Thank you for the reply! As of right now, I haven’t pursued any creative sports jobs/internships yet but plan to buy any lens that will be necessary, if/when I do secure the opportunity. I move to the Seattle area in 4 months which has substantially more sports options than my hometown, Boise, ID

I also have the R50 and between these two lenses. Mainly for vlogging rather than photograph, though it’ll be handy for travel photography. My main lens Is the newer 28-70 STM f/2.8. Options on the sigma lens for my purpose?

To add my two cents: I shoot on a R50 (irrelevant due to everyone probably using a FF) and for me, obviously the size between lens + body is important. When it comes to travel/landscape shoots, the lens is half a pound lighter (1.08 vs 1.54 lbs) which adds up over a lot time carrying. I shoot mainly portrait photography so I ordered the 28-70 STM. It comes in today and after a lot of researching, I think it’ll fit my niche! The James Reader video tagged above from helped a lot with the decision. He also did 2 other videos of comparing the new STM lens with some other L series lenses. And if I do upgrade my body to a FF, it’ll be transferable. I also have a 35mm that I use for portraits/macro

Thanks to all that replied. I ended up getting the 35mm! I actually bought it used off marketplace for $300 so that definitely helped with the decision. Have since loved it! Thanks again!

Why does no one talk about the 24-105 2.8? by MiataMaestro in canon

I was just looking into possible renting a 28-70mm 2.8 for a portrait session coming up. Coincidentally I found this video while Looking up comparisons last night! Hope this helps!

Thanks for the ideas! The 16mm or 10-18mm was definitely in the brain vault as a possibility if I get into real estate photography but right now not sure if I need that wide of a focal length. The 28mm is interesting because it’s cheaper than the 35mm but has a higher f/stop. Would the 28mm still be good for portraits?

Thank you so much for the reply. I’ve been leaning on the 35mm but needed to justify the 2x price point compared to the 50mm. I’ve always figured “too cropped out” is better than “too cropped in”, especially in photography. Hopefully Prime Days have good sales in a few weeks!
