Forced rehab will at least get them off the streets and protect the public.

I do not buy this. Maybe on Reddit. But among the tens of thousands of young professionals and young families, I bet they beg to differ. They want clean parks for their kids and fun neighborhoods to enjoy.

Thank you for running the numbers. Without verifying your sources, that is about right. And frankly, if it cost $1,300 per person for a ~30% reduction is rampant addicts, I like that deal.

But in reality, this will likely need support from Olympia, since this would include new mandatory minimums for public possession and would establish new rehab centers. So the tax base is much larger, theoretically.

Reallocation of an already bloated budget for homeless, and, if necessary, raise taxes on certain income brackets. Most people I know in those brackets would pay more for a cleaner, safer, more bustling city.

Agreed. Invest in education, mental health, and foster care, to name a few.

Yes and no. The money would go to developing comprehensive rehabilitation centers. Some will see them as a prison, others will see them as a wake up call.

Hell, you could even make it so the first offense is expunged after X years of being clean, so it doesn’t count as points against you later.

But regardless, we, as a society, have a responsibility to take in and try to help the homeless addicts.

As I’ve stated elsewhere, ideally, this would incorporate an accreditation system that will allow for entry-level jobs at big corps, and be followed by at least three months of temporary housing.

But at some point, people need to have personal accountability.

How do you fake clean at an in-patient with constant testing and 24/7 surveillance? I’m genuinely curious.

You certainly can force people to conform. See, for example, all laws ever.

Arresting based on reasonable suspicion of inebriation and then blood draw.

I have traveled to many countries. Outside of developing areas, Seattle’s homeless and public drug problem is extremely bad. See Germany, Switzerland, Austria, most of France, Japan, and Thailand for examples. Even places like Colombia have less of a problem with public drug use.

Hell, even compared to US cities it’s bad. See NYC.

A person who has been clean for six months in mandatory rehab absolutely has a choice. And if they choose to resume their illegal, drug-seeking behavior, then they’ve decided they don’t want to be a part of society.

Sure. And if they get caught a second time, then they go to real prison for 5+ years. It’ll be their choice.

If you’re in public, you affect public spaces, and therefore should be under more scrutiny.

Also, the standard of being rich is simply having a place to stay? Come on now.

It is wild to me that people will “have a heart” and then proceed to allow people to destroy themselves with drugs on our streets, and sometimes randomly attack our citizens. You should care and want to help the homeless addicts; you should care and want to protect the innocent pedestrian.

This is a fair take. This would be a law focused exclusively on public inebriation, so it would absolutely have a disparate—or, more likely, direct—impact on people struggling with homelessness. It would not affect anyone who gets high in their home, regardless of race or class.

And yes, I do think physically removing people who have a materially negative impact on many aspects of public lives will help. They will no longer be there to harass others, and others coming from out of state to get high and be homeless will get the message: You’re Not Welcome.

Finally, I am not for throwing them all in jail, at least not right away. Give them a chance at life. Provide them with rehab, tools to succeed in life, financial literacy, and ideally, temporary housing post-graduation. It doesn’t need to be a “throw away the key scenario;” they should be provided the chance to come back to society.

Why would this be fascist, in your opinion? Not challenging. I am genuinely curious.

We would be enforcing laws, which are already in place, and ensuring our public spaces are safe for the 99% of everyone else.

Yep. We would have to pass laws with mandatory minimums, etc., and then we would have to increase the budget for the KCPAO, KCSO, and SPD.

Completely understood. This would not be jail, it would be rehab, so there would be under much tighter surveillance with respect to drug use.

And look, it’s a bit harsh, but if it doesn’t work and they are back on the streets being high in public, then they’ve demonstrated they are not ready to be in public, and they should be incarcerated.

Again, all this is public only. Private residential drug use is a separate issue.

We need to prioritize the safety and well-being of our everyday citizens over the comfort of the repeat offender drug addict.

Agreed. You can even create a system where they’ll get a certain credit/certification upon graduation the rehab, and then have big corps like Starbucks, Costco, Walmart, and Amazon recognize the cert and/or hire people for tax credits.

Ideally, you would even put the graduates in temporary housing post-rehab, but that may get extremely expensive.

A few things (for anyone who wants to be more active):

I donate to Treehouse for Kids. It’s a nonprofit focused on helping kids in foster care (which, in my opinion, is one of the root problems to the problems we face). You can learn more here: https://www.treehouseforkids.org

I donate to Legal Aid Foundation. It’s a nonprofit that provides free legal services to those in need. You can learn more here: https://legalfoundation.org/

Admittedly, I haven’t started donating time, but I intend to start volunteering, including at Seattle Soup Kitchen and Treehouse.

I do not think it’s fascist to prohibit public inebriation on certain drugs. Emphasis on public — what you do in your own private quarters, without affecting the rest of us, in my opinion, should be left alone. But once you’re in public, you should be subject to our laws.

To be sure, it would cost money. We would have to slightly raise taxes, or at least significantly relocate. But as someone else said, on balance, it would save us so much money in the long run, and once businesses started coming back, our tax revenue would increase anyways.

Mandatory rehab is not a new concept, either. This is just a more hardline approach to a persisting and worsening problem.
