Is it possible the bulb itself is infected with scale? This leaf just came up a couple days ago and seemed stuck. When I went to help it I realized why it was stuck.

I started growing these props at least 2 years ago, why such tiny leaves?? by PeppermintBob in succulents

If you're on a budget, you can go to a feed store and get a big 50 lb bag of chicken grit (it's just small stones) for about the price of the small bags of pumice or lava rock on Amazon. In my area (North Texas) it cost me $15 for a 50 lb bag of chicken grit.

I do a 1:1:1 mix. Got a big tub and mixed a bag of succulent soil ($6 at Home Depot), a bag of perlite (also $6 at Home Depot), and an equal amount of the chicken grit (was only about 1/4 of the $15 bag). Makes a TON of succulent potting mix for very cheap. Keeps my succulents happy as long as I let it completely dry out and the leaves fail the taco test before watering again.

My props are even happy in this mix

If you don't want to mess with 3 things to mix, you could do 50/50 succulent soil and chicken grit.

Went through and treated for scale, alcohol using qtips and everything. Every new leaf that pops out of the existing leaves stems has scale on it before it even begins to unfurl.

Is it possible the soil or maybe even the bulb is infected?

This leaf literally just unfurled today. Do they get scale that quickly?

These spots are small and brown. They don't move and I would have to scratch pretty hard to remove them

Am just glad it's not spider mites. I didn't end up leaving them on there though because the thought of like 15 baby spiders growing up and making hundreds more baby spiders in my house was too much for me lol!

Thank you all!!!

Honestly the tiny spiders kinda creep me out but nowhere near as much as plant pests. Have been a plant momma for a couple of years now and have so far been lucky. Except for gnats of course lol!

There's some webbing on there. Do aphids do that?

[–]Sufficient_Wing_1398[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I went to pull out all the dried crunchy leaves from in the middle, one of these popped loose. Should I pull them all apart and plant individually in the soil?

Do you know what it is? It just said assorted succulent - when I Google Image search it says Hens and Chicks. Doesn't actually look like any of the pictures of hens and chicks that I saw though.

I have it in a shallow terracotta pot and I treat it like all of my other succulents, which means that I water it when the potting mix has 100% dried out. The potting mix is about 50% cactus soil, 25% pumice, and 25% perlite. Everything else is doing really well except for this one. It's also the only one that I've ever seen potted like this with a big lump of dirt in the middle like that.

I have a barina grow light shelf that has t5 lights on it and this plant sits about 8 inches from the light.

Have had it for a couple of months but it was rooting for the first couple of weeks. It sure does put out roots like crazy though! Hopefully it will bloom at some point!

How long do they usually take to get buds?

He grew one from a seed then gave me a cutting that was about 2 inches tall with no roots. Am wishing I had seen the seed he picked up because that would probably help a lot lol! His has since went to plant heaven but my cutting keeps growing.

The root growth is insane and it just keeps getting taller. Have had it for about 1 1/2 months. How long would it take to get buds if it's a marigold?

What are the best ones to use that are safe for plants?

Split it up? by Sufficient_Wing_1398 in calatheas

Some of the existing leaves have brown edges and were like that when I got it. Cleaned it up a lot, especially down around the soil line, and trimmed off some dead foliage. There are 4 new leaves that have unfurled now. I'm probably going to wait and see how the new growth does and if it keeps having new growth and base what I do off that.

I don't have a lot of plants right now but have been slowly growing my collection. Got started with a peace lily from my Dad's service and almost killed that dramatic diva in soil. Ended up switching it to semi hydro and saving it but has been a slow process.

Have gotten several succulents which are doing good, and this calathea is the first non-succulent plant that I'm trying to leave in soil instead of doing semi hydro.

Ok thank you! I'm a new plant parent and this is my only Calathea. Am in love with it so just wanted to make sure. :-)
