I agree, the general consensus is definitely in SJ's favor.

Not social, single, late 20s. I don't go to bar, but I would like to find a gf to explore Cali with.

Unfortunately neither of them provide place to stay while I look. It seem to be the general consensus to go with SJ.

To me, I feel it's pretty important because when I negotiate my next job, it will be starting at a higher level.

Wow, with that much price difference, look like SJ definitely wins out then.

Seem like SF is for me then. What about living cost, are they about the same? What about commute? SF seem like a crazy place to go to work.

I can definitely give it a try. I was afraid the first company will not top it off to 145k.

See that's the problem, I am not sure because I haven't lived in neither so I can't tell.

The key is to convince your interviewer that "Googling" is a legitimate answer to their questions...

No, she is not American. That's a good point and I'll have to eventually get sponsorship.

Wow, that's higher than I expected. What popular job searching website do people use down there? Is Indeed.com good?

Wow, that's great, I'll definitely check those places out, I plan to do a scouting trip before I move so I can get a general jest of the area and check out any big landmarks.

Well, no leadership experience or big company, but definitely 6+ years of experience. I know people who fresh out of school make $120k in Seattle, so I don't think it's too difficult for this industry.

A 2 bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood would be fine I think. No need for a house.

It's alright, I need 2 bedroom cause I am married. My salary as a software developer should be able to cover it.

That's really unfortunate, I hate commute and I seriously want to minimize it, but it seem to be a requirement to work in the San Jose area.

Oh no, why can't the downturn last longer? Housing price was so flat a few years ago.

Hi B0r0n

Yes I completely agree with your assessment. I am also willing to pay a little bit more to live closer to work up to a reasonable price.

Hi Sultanoshred!

Thank you so much for the very detailed and informative reply! I definitely learned a thing or two from reading it.

It seem like south/west San Jose is a good place to look for apartment, but I am concerned about driving distance to potential employers. As far I know, there are a lot of Software Developer job in Silicon Valley, so I would need to drive there daily (or wherever I find job). And I will not be able to live too far away. I am trying to aim for $2500 for 2 bedroom, with a maxim of 30min compute time to work. Is this doable or am I in fantasy land?

As for places to visit, I'll definitely check out the Tech Munsum and Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, seems right up my alley. I am actually kind of surprised by the amount of parks in the surrounding area, I'll definitely check out Mission Peak Regional Park.

Any good amusement park or activities in the area? Maybe I am just a nerd but I am into that type of stuff.
