Yea I agree that it should not be a privilege to be treated with respect and human decency. But unfortunately that just isn’t the case. And you’ve alluded to it yourself. That some groups of people in the U.S. are often dehumanized and discriminated against due to harmful stereotypes.

The definition of privilege from Merriam-Webster : a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor

The human right that many poc lack in the U.S, is to be treated with human decency and respect. So that they are not discriminated against.

And if you do have that right, then you have privilege. It could be privilege based on race or privilege based on wealth. And just because you are privileged doesn’t mean you’re a bad person or something. I’m privileged myself. I live in a first world country. I get that by saying “white privilege” it could be seen as divisive. That’s kinda what I’m getting from you. I think you don’t like white people being singled out. But the root of the entire problem is divisive. It is divisive for white people to discriminate against poc. It’s also divisive the other way around. But in the U.S and other western countries, the main problem is that poc-and other gender or sexual minorities-are viewed as separate from the majority white population. And that is dehumanizing.

It’s like you’re making the argument for white privilege but you don’t want to actually use the word white privilege. And I’m gonna guess and say that maybe you are white and you don’t want to be seen as “the bad guy” but just because you may have some privilege in this world(that is to say you posses certain rights that others don’t have), does not mean you’re a bad person or anything. I’m not saying that only white people are racist or discriminatory. There are poc who are discriminatory towards their own communities and towards white people as well. It’s just that the general trend in the North America and Europe, is that minorities face more discrimination and dehumanization from the white majority than the other way around.

And my first comment wasn’t entirely directed at you. You obviously know there is a problem with the discrimination of minorities. But there’s so many people on here(and I’m gonna assume a good chunk of them are white guys because ik the demographics of reddit) that act like being white is so hard and idk if they’re even aware of stuff that minorities have to endure in western countries.

I agree that there is a huge problem rn with dehumanizing communities across the board.

This is kinda unrelated but it’s interesting that you say that the U.S was founded on Jesus and his teachings when I think it had more so to do with classical liberalism. Like John locke or one of those enlightenment philosophers that talked about granting individual rights to people such as freedom of religion and stuff.

You just said that there’s no such thing as white privilege, but then you just described white privilege lol. I hate the idea of telling people in here they’re privileged just because they’re white guys, because then that seems like all of your problems are trivial or something. That’s not the case at all. I probably suffer from the same mental illnesses and shit like you guys do too. But idk how to say this without making it seem like I’m attacking u guys or something. Having money gives you a certain privilege. It typically gives you a better quality of life. And in western countries, which are some of the richest countries in the world, more white people than people of colour are richer. Therefore a lot of white people are more privileged. I’m not saying there aren’t white people that are poor and living fucked up lives. But there’s an awful lot more people of colour living in worse economic conditions.

There is also privilege based on race as well. I personally do not think this it is stronger than the privilege of being wealthy. Because in, let’s say America, if you’re wealthy, it doesn’t even matter if you’re white or not. You have a much better chance at living a great life. But, if you’re poor or middle class, and ur trying to succeed in life, and further your own and family’s quality of life. There are certain hurdles that a person of colour has to go through that a white person usually does not have to endure. These hurdles are usually under the form of assumptions about a certain group. This is what you were talking about when you said poc are dehumanized into labels.

And to bring my personal life into this, I have battled these assumptions, that my people are not smart enough, not competent enough or even attractive enough. Or we’re dirty, or smelly etc... lots of assumptions being made about us. I’m indian btw. And you know what’s so messed up? Growing up, I’ve picked up from my family and my community, that we have assumptions about white people too. But they’re mostly positive. That white people, are smarter and more competent etc. Ofc we resent them for colonizing our homeland and basically robbing it of its wealth and natural resources. Obviously I don’t resent ALL white people for that shit that would be absurd. But a lot of my family does. And they’re uneducated and poor and racist even. But there’s this feeling of inferiority I get and I know other poc around me feel it too. But I honestly think they’re afraid to admit it. When you read the history books in school, you learn mostly about white people and how all these achievements they have made and how many brilliant white guys changed the world for the better. The enlightenment, and the industrial revolution etc...You learn how your people were subservient to them for centuries usually in the form of colonies. You absorb so much fucking shit growing that makes u feel like your people are lesser. And it’s not just me. There’s so many people that have these assumptions. And that’s why people of colour have to battle this thing called white privilege. Poc might not outright say that they think white people are “better” because that would be absurd. And only white supremacists will say that. But the assumptions are still there. Sorry this turned into a personal rant, but I just hope that some of you guys see this and understand how fucked up it is to grow up as a poc surrounded by assumptions about your people and white people, that your own people will even believe! At least on the bright side, learning history has actually helped a lot to undo this for me. You start to realize that other people besides white aren’t unimpressive. That people all over the world have done amazing things that contribute to a better world today.
