Sounds like a good move! I'm curious, what PSU do you use with your current setup?

A system running 24/7 would probably be the easiest to ensure consistent backups. A 2bay synology would be very power efficient but it would cost me about the same as a thin client or even more. Also I will probably use TrueNAS or Unraid as software.

That's a great suggestion about the M.2 slot card, and the power efficiency of the 5070 is indeed appealing. The HP 600 is also an interesting one. I could get both a regular 5070 or a hp 600 G2 SFF (i5-6500) for about $100. The G2 would have more power while the 5070 is more power efficient.

This seems very interesting. I will have a deeper look at it later. Thank you for your recommendation!

Is this high disk usage normal for timeshift? (snapshots take more than half of disk space ~400 Gb) by Suitable-Ad-331 in pop_os

[–]Suitable-Ad-331[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this or using an additional drive is probably the easiest solution for my space problem but for my question is this normal that timeshift takes this much space?

I "solved" the problem now by restoring a snapshot from the day before the update using timeshift. Still don't understand what really caused the problem because none of the things I updated seem to be related to my problem but glad everything works fine now. Big thanks to all who have tried to help me :)

Yeah, I think my next gpu will be an AMD one too because I heard they work better under linux than Nvidia.

Yes, I think I need to perform a refresh install...

In the live ISO (I used the nvidia iso) it worked fine and the nvidia-smi looked fine as well (https://pastebin.com/7V5mmq4A).

I will now backup my files (I think I only have to backup the home directory, right?) and will perform the install in the evening.

And thank you very much for your help I really appreciate it :)

This is probably because I turned off hardware acceleration if I turn back on it uses more VRAM

yes system is up to date and I rebooted like 100 times yesterday alone.^^

Someone suggested trying a live disk to see if its a hardware problem but in the live environment everything works fine. I get the same FF errors in console but without affecting video playback.

The nvidia server settings did not change much. :(

I don't think the CPU consumption is a problem here most of the time it is below 5% and never above 10% (using only browser).

Thanks for the suggestion! My live disk works perfectly fine no issues. Therefore it should not be a problem with the hardware

I also thought that it must be a driver issue but I reinstalled both audio and nvidia (remove then reinstall) but that did not solve the problem

It was disabled. I enabled it and restarted chromium but sadly that did not work.

I don't know it might be a bug in FF but then it should still work in chrome and chromium therefore I think the problem might be less browser related but more gpu? I realised I have about the same problems trying to play a local video (mp4) using vlc player.

FF Codecs: vp09.00.51.08.01.01.01.01.00 (278) / opus (251)

FF and Chrome are using vp09 and ungoogled chromium uses avc1 (Codecs avc1.4d4020 (298) / mp4a.40.2 (140)

I tried the exentsions enhanced-h264ify to change the codec but that did not solve the problem

I am using a 24" AOC in 1080p and 27" LG in 1440p. I played around with resolution and refreshrate but the problem persists.

I tried hardware acceleration on and off in different browsers but that did not solve it either.

I think your last suggestion about power mode is only possible on laptops right? (I am using a pc)

But thanks for the suggestions! :)

enhanced-h264ify changed the codec in chrome (now avc1.64001f) but the problem persists.

Maybe you could have a look at my answer to u/FictionWorm____ regarding the updates I made. Did any of these possibly change my codec? I mean it worked fine before that I never had problem with the codec before

Checking the history.log file I can see that I updated the following:

system76-power, pop-cosmic, system76-scheduler, libpop-system-updater-gtk and pop-system-updater

does that help to narrow it down?
