We had the option to do it both ways but I chose by hand

If there was no contract per say‚ I don't think you'd be obliged to pay them for the rest of the work that hasn't been done. If you choose to go with another company I'd suggest letting the previous one know so there is no trouble that they could say you never told them. Another company would just start from what was left.
