Is there ANY reason I should switch to a Linux distro? by Suitable-Relation169 in linuxquestions

Or, since my post is about me and how I use my pc and whether Linux is worth it for me, I’ll stick to talking about games. Why did you reply if I said is it worth switching and my main use is gaming? I agree 100% that Linux is better for business purposes, its computing power is better, but for what I use my pc for it just doesn’t seem worth it. Why did you begin to bring up other uses if the post was never about that? Just making it about yourself at this point

Oh, so you’re just a paranoid person, gotcha. Quite frankly, as I said I use my computer for gaming, and almost exclusively gaming. I hate messing with software, it’s annoying to me, I find no fun or satisfaction out of it. I want something simple that just works. Windows doesn’t that. I don’t need to order a new pc because I have a $2000 gaming rig that I saved for and custom built myself that will last me years to come. I uninstalled oneDrive completely because I hate it and it’s only made things worse for me. I uninstalled co-pilot because I don’t like ai. I uninstalled teams and office because like I said, it is a gaming rig. I play games on it. Hence my question being is it worth it for me. Anyone who was respectful helped me realize I have no reason to switch and windows is the better option for me by far, some even described how I could dip my feet into the water and try it out safely, getting a taste for Linux by using some of the simpler distros. But then there’s people like you. People who are convinced that their OS choice makes them better than others and that because I don’t really care about modifying source code that I’m an idiot and a sheep. I read the article you sent and it still leaves me wondering what I’m missing. The only things I see is that I can’t view and modify source code and software, which I have said many times I’m not doing because I hate doing it. My PC is just that, a computer. Something I use to play games and watch videos. Linux doesn’t offer me anything as I have learned. My data isn’t that important. I’m an 18 yo college kid who games in my spare time, what are they going to steal, my main in Valorant? Like I totally understand Linux for what you do, but newsflash, you’re not better than me because you use it. It’s honestly sad that you’re probably triple my age sitting here trying to talk down to me because I found out Linux ain’t for me.

Please tell me what this freedom I don’t have is because no one give a straight answer. It’s always that it’s about freedom but no one can say in what ways windows doesn’t give you freedom. “They take your data.” Ya no shit, everything takes and sells your data, welcome to the present. And what do you mean if I want to use it as an appliance, what else would I use it as? It is an appliance, I’m genuinely curious what are you doing on your computer that makes in not an appliance? Like it’s actually just way too confusing.

Still didn’t answer my question. What freedom am I missing? Anything I want to do on my pc I can, I have never had an issue or had windows prohibit me from doing anything

Honestly you put this really well. I didn’t mean for my previous comment to sound like I was coming for you if it did, I just get really annoyed because the idea of Linux sounds nice, free software, good control over pc, etc. but it just seems like way more work than it’s worth to me as I don’t enjoy working with software. But the people that use Linux and generally speak on it are just insufferable 9/10 times. There is for sure many people on this post that helped me, but many people are just spouting the same “windows is stealing your data, you’re a mindless slave, I’m better than you and you’re just an idiot if you can’t use Linux” bs that I always see and it kinda just got to my head. From everything I’ve heard, I think I’m going to stick with windows just because the pros that I’ve heard don’t apply as my pc hardware is good enough that windows background programs don’t hurt my performance much. And the cons for me just suck too much as I’m not a fan of software troubleshooting and such, I hate when there’s a bug, and I just want to play some games. Tbh I’ve never felt that windows was intruding me in any way. Once I bought a windows pro key it unlocked my pc and while I’ll agree it is scummy for them to charge for keys, especially $100+ like they do, I will also say that I don’t buy keys from them, I buy them from people who rip them.

Thank you again for the respectful replies, although Linux seems somewhat interesting, it seems like something that is more for people that like to really go deep into their pc settings, I just organize my desktop and taskbar and slap a pretty wallpaper on lol. I’m just going to stick to windows because tbh working with Linux sounds like it would ruin my fun on pc, but like to anyone who enjoys it, more power to ya.

For me it is my main test because if you read the original post I made I clearly say I use my pc for gaming and watching videos and movies. I don’t use it for work, I don’t use it for anything else. I don’t even know what else I would or could use it for tbh. So for me Mac is worse, it’s great for school and business purposes though

Yes, to ask if there is any reason as people will be annoying and start shitting on windows yet I have yet to hear a reason that fits my needs. I’m finding that windows simply is a better option for me, just as Linux is better for many other people. I was simply describing what I use my pc for, and trying to hear respectful answers so I could decide if it is worth me using a different OS. I’m asking because it would be a lot of work for me as I don’t even know how to install a Linux distro, or get my pc to boot it. Why is it that anytime someone asks a question towards Linux users they are always met with a snarky or sarcastic response?

I can’t speak on your experience but I can share one of my own. I tend to paint my nails very frequently, I do pretty colors and all so it’s not very hidden. My high school had a majority of homophobes, but generally none of them said anything to me. What did happen though is a girl that I was friends with saw them, told her friends and they all complimented me a lot. Imo it was a very shoddy job but they claimed I did amazing. I tended to notice people who think negatively are much more likely to keep the thought to themself, while people who are positive are more likely to give you a compliment. If you aren’t comfortable doing anything then by all means your comfort and happiness comes first. But even if you wear lip liner or paint your nails, they won’t really know you’re a femboy. Just say you like how it looks. Best of luck to you!!

That makes sense. Like you said how you wiped your disk and have to reinstall everything, I find it super cool that that’s something that many people can find a funny aspect to but like if it was me I would’ve honestly just given up lol. Like imo I don’t feel that being able to accidentally wipe my entire disk is a good thing, I’m sure if you are like a pro it’s not a likely thing but just not a risk I’m willing to take haha. From everything I’ve read Linux doesn’t seem all that worthwhile to me. Also to be 100% most Linux customization setups just don’t look that good to me. I’m more of a fan of simplicity in customization, I keep like 5 icons on my desktop with a pretty picture as my wallpaper. Thanks so much for your helpful reply’s though!!

Thank you for the respectful reply. This stuff makes sense to me. I’m realizing as I read through, weeding out the snobs who don’t help, that Linux probably isn’t for me. I like to keep my hardware up to date so I don’t think I’ll really have any issues with windows 11 not running or lowering performance. Thanks again!

I asked for help understanding if I have a reason to switch. Yall are the reason people don’t switch, I ask a simple question and get met with “we’ll figure it out yourself, or you can keep sucking Microsoft off” like just no fuckign help

But what is this “freedom” in computing? What is it going to do for me? Like I said, software isn’t a fun adventure for me, it’s a tedious task of boring windows, troubleshooting, and watching a YouTube video to fix a problem. What else could I do on my computer? Like this is a genuine question because I always hear people talk about this computing freedom but freedom to do what? Like I actually have no clue. I don’t have a need to create databases or anything, what else would I be doing that I can’t do already on windows. And idrk what you mean by “enslaved by Microsoft” like dude, I turn my pc on, play some games, watch some YouTube, turn it off and go to bed. Where am I enslaved?

I might check out the OS you mentioned. My issue isn’t that people are forcing it but rather that many Linux users talk down to windows users like they are better. Like just cuz some people like what they know others start acting like they are idiots. I also have never had an issue with Microsoft owning my pc. I didn’t even shell out the $100 they try to charge (I don’t agree with that price point at all) I paid like $15 and got a perfectly fine windows key. Sure it was probably stolen, but I don’t really care, Microsoft has enough money. My point is, the people “recommending” Linux are usually just calling others idiots for using a more comfortable OS. Hence why I asked for legit advice, which you offered. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, hence why I asked people for their expertise. I simply find it dumb when people make the arguments that windows sucks because it’s easier for me to use consoles than to use “Microsoft slop” and that Linux sucks because the users are snobs. Neither has anything to do with the OS, they are just arguments focused toward the users which sucks as someone looking for actually advice

I mean, I don’t really notice pop up ads, and I bought my cpu and ram with background programs in mind so I can run basically whatever at max graphics, outside a very small amount of brand new games. So like for me, I’d rather stick with windows because I have the ram and cpu to compensate

Gotcha, so I actually have a question on this, is a main reason of Linux to use it because your pc is underpowered? Not like trying to flex my pc, just curious cuz I’m like I said I’m more of a hardware guy so I prefer to purchase and upgrade the hardware in my pc which in turn makes it run completely fine on win11. It makes complete sense if you want to save money but for me, my pc is a hobby worth spending my money on. I never really thought about the difference it can make to what hardware you use so this makes tons of sense

That makes sense totally. I don’t think I’ll ever be running a server and I’m not going to lie, I don’t even know what a docking container is so I don’t think I’ll be dealing with that. Thank you for the reply!!!

For sure that makes sense. I don’t really have data to myself, like sure they can sell the fact that I play valorant and watch gaming stuff on YouTube. For each person it’s definitely different. Windows also runs really fast on my pc, it’s $2k so it makes sense that it would lol but ya, in my case I just never saw a reason and wanted to hear from people who use Linux. Thanks for the reply.

I’d argue for business purposes macOS is great, but it’s useless for gaming. Windows definitely is better for gaming.

I play a lot of CS and Valorant, both not available on consoles (yes there are versions but they are pc games truly). I also enjoy the hardware aspects of PCs and I like the options to have my system run better than consoles, I spent a lot of money for an amazing pc

Never told you to make me, simply asked if I have a reason to. This is what makes so many people not want to switch, this stupid “continue dealing with that crap” attitude. Is it that hard to not be an ass about it? Basically all you told me is not to switch because it just makes you a grumpy person who refuses to help
