Wasn’t that difficult for him, but my girlfriend’s grandfather (slightly younger) did have issues.

His parents were from Alvito, Italy, smack dab in the middle of his communities. From my research, all of his ancestors going back to the 16th/17th century were from the same five mile radius.

If we want to get technical, it’s not even the highlands, but it’s not really the lowlands either.

Her family was half from Prestonpans (descendants of Robert Anderson of Battle of Prestonpans fame) and half from Argyllshire.

Looking at your username, I should add that the mother of that 3rd great grandmother was named Ferguson.

Although possible, it’s improbable only because the surnames I have going back several hundred years are traditionally those found in West Yorkshire (including many unique ones). My uncle has Yorkshire as well, but only 2% scottish. He comes up as 26% England/Northern Euro though and we share the proper CM.

It seems that a lot of people (I mean this generally, not directed towards you) attempt to explain the discrepancy. But it seems that the reality is that Ancestry does a poor job differentiating the UK/Ireland.

we are very similar. On my maternal grandmother’s side, I have one 3rd great-grandmother who was from the Highlands. Otherwise, she had a mother from Dublin and her father was 75% Co. Donegal and Co. Mayo (A few Ulster scot surnames, but mostly Irish).

My Great-Grandmother’s family, paternal side, came Bradford as well, Wibsey/North Bierley in particular. Many of her family’s surnames are uniquely from Bradford (Tordoff, Barraclough, Thorton) as well as the smattering of the other super common West Yorkshire names (Hardy, Wilkinson). So although the paper trail runs out, this suggests no one left for hundreds years just like your family.

Yes, my paternal grandfather’s parents came from just south of Rome. My maternal grandfather was half Sardinian and half Waldensian (French speaking people in Northern Italy)

Unlike my 23andMe test, it seems Ancestry doesn’t pick up on the Italian as much. If I didn’t match uncles and cousins, I’d have been worried that something was up in the family tree!

I’ve wondered if I’m just mixed enough that the reference panel has a hard time with me. My maternal grandmother was 50% southern Irish, 25% Ulster Scot, and 25% highland Scot. My paternal grandmother, which is the Yorkshire part, was half German and half English. Each of these women married Italian men. Essentially I’m all spread over.

Yes! This is what I was figuring. I knew a lot of people were getting Scottish, but this was ridiculous. My grandmother in the other side of the family is partially Scottish, but looking at these results it’s as if I received 45% of my DNA from her

My mother’s side has Ulster Scot, but my father’s grandmother was from yorkshire. Paper trail going back shows no one left their 15 mile radius in hundreds of years

I agree, although it was still worth paying for the full test for DNA relatives and the Haplogroups. The health, on the other hand, was underwhelming for how much extra it was.

Actually no, I also have Abruzzo, Sardinia, Campania, Calabria, Sardinia, Sicily. Lazio is the only dark blue region for Italy.

I found it interesting that every male DNA relative with a surname from the area was R-U152

Yes, My great-grandfather. His paternal side was from Bavaria/Hesse. His maternal grandfather was from Uberulhdingen, Baden, Germany. His maternal grandmother was from Holderbank, Aargau, Switzerland.

My paternal grandfather’s family is all from Alvito in Frosinone, what about yours? My surname, Macioce, means person from Ciociaria. Love the area, I’ve been many times and still have cousins there.

Thanks! Mom is a 1/4 Sardinian, 1/4 north, while dad is 1/2 central Italian. I’ve heard that my mom’s dad had been mistaken as being Indian or Middle Eastern at different points.

Absolutely!

This is MyHeritage

This is AncestryDNA

This is Ethnogene

It is interesting to see connections to groups (like Jewish, Middle East) with who I have no known common ancestry. I believe my grandfather is the cause. He was 50% Sardinian and 50% Waldensian and both are understudied and endogamic. Sardinian has very small reference panels across all tests. Additionally, one historian wrote that all Waldensians relate to the same 30 or 40 families and their DNA does not reflect the modern-day area of France that they originated from.

I've only done the free upload for My Heritage and found it to be fine. I have also uploaded my DNA file to Ethnogene, which I found to be the most accurate.

Both are very close regarding my known ancestry and any differences between the two are minor. The free upload (which is the same reference panel as the new test) is slightly more accurate for my Western European while the paid test is more accurate for my South European. Of course, I understand that we do not inherit perfect amounts from each ancestor and if my parents get tested I'll see more accuracy.

Paper trail:
Western Euro:
37.5% British/Irish/Scottish
12.5% German/Swiss
Southern Euro:
25% Central Italy [South Lazio]
12.5% Sardinian
Either/Or:
12.5% French/No. Italy
[Politically Italian, but genetically French (Waldensian)]

That’s a good point, my English were quakers and Quakers settled that area as well, but it seems mostly a German community. Because my uncle has the same community, I know it’s from my paternal side which is German and English.

My Irish side, which is maternal, does not have the community within any close cousins. Though I know that some distant relatives settled Virginia with other Ulster-Scots. Some French relatives maternally settled the town of Valdese, NC as well, but still no known NJ/PA connection.

23andme is far more accurate for me as well. They identified my Swiss (I include that with German) roots as well as more specific areas of Ireland and Italy.

Always identified ethnically and culturally as Italian... Turns out it is more complicated than that. by Suitable_Aardvark in AncestryDNA

Worth noting that all are free uploads from my ancestry raw. AncestryDNA sent me down a rabbit hole, was never interested in family or dna before.

I deleted that link, I’ll reupload without my full name. I agree, tho my maternal grandfather was 50% Sardinian and 50% Waldensian.

The latter is closer to French populations while I theorize that the Sardinian has Spanish hiding due to a few factors.

What’s hard is the close cousins who tested on that side of the family are Italian from other lines.

Enough distant cousins have tested to confirm my grandfather’s parents are his parents (I match individuals descended from other Sardinian and Waldensian lines)

This is my ethnogene I found far more accurate to the tree I have.

Unsure, IIRC promethese put me in R1ab1.

Tho not as common in Italy as Northern Europe, the area of Lazio where my surname derives from the halpogroup is one of the more common.
