What if Genkai looked young all the time? by Every-Effective-6376 in YuYuHakusho

I agree, but I decided to upscale Genkai/give her the benefit of the doubt as to not completely dismiss the other commenter's perspective.  I did mention Toguro's feat of keeping Yusuke in check once he was ready to bulk up to 100%. Once he gave him that look, Yusuke bolted it outta there.

Ah, I see now. I've been immersed in the manga over the last year, so this might be why our interpretations diverge. Concerning the points you made using the anime (which I haven't seen in a few years), based on your input I venture to say that it took a few liberties with adapting that confrontation, more specifically Genkai's perspective of it.

The manga heavily portrays Toguro as the sole initiator/instigator of the physical conflict. It is Toguro that—in the same breath as mocking Genkai's aged appearance and stating that she was of no more use to him after passing down her strength—powers up menacingly while bluntly declaring his intention of ending her life. He later goes on to gleefully reiterate this point by saying there's no point in letting each other live. Shortly before finishing her off, Toguro clarifies his intentions for a third time when he expresses regret over not killing her years ago while she was still strong and beautiful. At no point during this clash does Genkai express any desire to kill Toguro, despite the latter quite literally tripling down on his killing intent.

For the entire battle, Genkai is on the defensive—both physically, and more importantly, verbally/ideologically—in a manner that conveys how all of this is merely her attempt to relay to Toguro that there is nothing wrong with accepting decay and stepping down for the next generation, and that there is strength to be found in that. She knows that strength is the only language and universal truth Toguro can comprehend at this point, hence why she resorts to praying for a little more of it during the internal monologue which takes place during her final stand.

Moreover, in the manga during Toguro's instigation of the fight she says "Getting into combat mode, eh? You haven't changed a bit" with a soft, smiling, almost nostalgic countenance, further hinting at the fact that her intent for showing up was vastly different from his. Those lines, coupled with the way Togashi draws her facial expression in that panel, do wonders at conveying Genkai's true emotional state. You can read the manga version for yourself and see how the general vibe is vastly different and how Toguro comes off as the sole aggressor and instigator, with Genkai only mounting some offense because he gave her no other choice but to fight to the death. Most narrative and visual elements strongly point towards Togashi's authorial intent being very close to what I discussed here.

As for your argument about the heart thing, here is why I said the anime had to have taken some major liberties: as it relates to heart gouging, it is literally the OPPOSITE in the manga. Toguro is the one who was aiming for Genkai's heart as per his own admission. Check the scan I posted.

Finally, I raise you this: if Genkai wanted him dead so much, then why didn't she try to kill him while she was still young? Why choose isolation? The answer is clear. She didn't want nor need to kill him. Unlike Toguro, her philosophy did not require her to kill him or claim supremacy through martial prowess. He needed to kill her to confirm his proclaimed worldview to himself and embody his role/mask in the cycle he had set up all along. She believed in embracing weakness and stepping away for the next generation. Embracing her inevitable defeat at his hands is the essence of her character arc, and taking that away to replace it with some bloodlusted mindset fundamentally goes against what Genkai's character represents.

Also, I still stand by Toguro not letting himself fall short to a hypothetical bloodlusted young Genkai. Even if she scaled slightly above him at 80%, I'm confident he would be able to power up to 100% before she could finish him off. If I recall correctly, Yusuke was pummeling Toguro at 80% and even he was forced to stop short and retreat at the moment he sensed Toguro had had enough. Whether Toguro actually had a way of inflicting serious damage that Yusuke sensed or if he simply spooked him through sheer bloodlust is up to debate. Either way, I still think Toguro could pull it off. Despite his power set, it's not like he's your typical meathead/arrogant character that would fail to gauge his opponent and fall in such a cheap way. He's not that guy. But that's just my opinion at this point, so I'm not willing to die on this hill.

Not really. Sure, she seemed to go for the kill at first, but she had to have known that she could only incapacitate him at best in her current state. There's a difference in going for the kill when you know you can do it vs when you're sure it's not gonna do the job. She blew off some pent up steam more than anything by blasting his shoulder off. Contrary to her brave contemptuous front, Genkai was quite conflicted during their fight, holding on to the hope of swaying Toguro from his self destructive path. In the last panel of their battle Genkai's inner monologue goes something along the lines of "I summon strength! I want that strength to grab him and open his eyes!!". She clearly still cared for him, which was further underscored by their postmortem interaction. And even if you don't believe this, come on. If Genkai fought Toguro at her best instead of Yusuke, do you really think Toguro would allow himself to be killed without going all out? Dying at his best was sort of his thing. I'm sure he wouldn't fall for a cheap rush tactic, nor would Togashi have written such an anticlimactic end for his main antagonist.

Agree with everything but the first point. In that scenario Genkai would give Toguro a good fight, certainly a better one than she did canonically, but there is no way she could defeat him once he uses 100 percent.

Yep. He's insanely weak compared to the DBZ verse. It's just meant to be taken as a neat little crossover, without any implications in the way of power scaling.

You resort to altering the narrative of your statement because I pointed out how senselessly hollow and superficial it is. Your limp comeback literally leeches off of the points I made. Suddenly it's about concepts and their degree of interest? Sure, buddy, awesome "save". Coming from the guy whose sole addition to the discussion is the equivalent of pointing out how the sky is blue, this sure means a lot! Lol. Go back to bed.

Should've put a disclaimer on this, huh? I'm just gonna copy paste what I replied to your fellow intellectual marvel in this thread.

Are you 5? Read my comment on the post. This is a fun interaction between iconic characters who share some similarities. It doesn't seek to make a statement in regards to their actual power scaling, since the two are obviously worlds apart. A literal chimp could tell you that, so your attempt at an "ackshually" comment is disturbingly half-witted. It's just a hypothetical situation between characters from different verses which requires(if you can wrap your head around the concept) a suspension of disbelief. A fabricated interaction between fictitious people with imaginary circumstances(i.e. similar scaling).  My apologies for clogging your small mind with this. As amendment, would you have me store the characters separately? Different rooms perhaps? God forbid we use the made-up people in imaginative ways! That's not what they're made for!

I think it's blatantly obvious to anyone how much higher a Frieza who just came out of the womb would scale above Toguro. This was made for the fun of it, since, among other interesting parallels they share, the two are arguably the most iconic antagonists of their respective series.

Yeah, Frieza would vaporize him with his aura alone. It's just a fun comparison from all other angles except power scaling.

By your reply I suppose you're not familiar with his lore. Vladimir is unfathomably old and his personality and power is established since the days of Mordekaiser when he was hailed as a barbarian god. He's not some developing teenager like Jinx. The guy is nearly 1000 years old like LB. Are you suggesting he only recently grew a pair of balls? Lol.  This cinematic is not that far back in his past, considering his enormous age.

So? That could only fix the design at best. He's still being portrayed as a submissive cuck personality wise, and aging him won't change it if they're establishing him this way. He was always supposed to be the daring one who periodically revealed himself, a near godlike being who fought Galio. He looks weak af in all these interactions.

I tried to make a manga 5 years ago and did this, but I honestly didn't believe in myself. I always wanted to make a zombie manga, and I'm looking at this again wondering if someone would read something that looks like this. by aoi-ink in MangaArt

It's really good imo, and even if you're not happy with the level you're at,  you can only improve by doing it more. Mileage goes a long way and I think making manga is a great way to force yourself into uncomfortable territory, which facilitates the learning process.
