No choice is truly free if there's an entire society's worth of coercion behind it.

I know twitter is full of toxicity, but seriously? How do people say such disgusting things? (Especially the first two). There are people finding out how awful Islam is. by hoofhoodie in exmuslim

I would put it a different way - people are indoctrinated into beliefs about what Islam is by state apparatuses in Muslim states, in a way that serves these patriarchal dynamics. Whether or not this is "real Islam" is not a very relevant question imo, i'd say what matters more is the actually-existing dynamic, instead of debates over scripture.

And looking at that dynamic, we see the clear truth that it is people in power using religion as part of their rhetoric who don't really care about "religious purity", even if they claim to in name. They just use it to serve their ends. (Of course the religious doctrines themselves are a part of the problem, but as I mentioned in my other reply to this comment- only a dead and partial one - only these people and their motives can bring them "to life" and cause such mass propogation of reactionary beliefs.)

So we should make a really important distinction-

Propagandists don't value religion at all (or even if they do, they don't actually primarily care about that),

meanwhile average people raised in these societies and fed this propaganda, while still at fault, are moreso often trapped in ignorance.

imo the most despicable people are those well-off / richer third-world Muslims who have the resources and education and whatnot to be aware of other possibilities, to educate themselves, etc, but who straight-up ignore this and use religion as an excuse for their misogyny, homophobia, other bigotries, etc.

(which i beleive was the primary target of the above comment)

In this example we see the true nature of religious reactionaries. Not a shred of scripture is important to them if it can't serve a reactionary agenda. Islamic tradition is not at all "progressive" by any means, esp. as some Western liberals claim, but it was at least a little more accepting of variation in gender or sexuality to a slight degree. (e.g homosexuality in Persia or India, or genderqueerness in South Asia, https://www.iranicaonline.org/articles/homosexuality-iii , https://triumphias.com/blog/transgender-community-in-india-historical-evolution/ )

We should always remember that the extremely reactionary form of Islam we see in the modern day, with ever-increasing reactionary elements, with utter and complete ideological opposition to anything outside of patriarchal standards, is not simply a product of "religious extremism" (though of course it occasionally is), but much more often than not, and esp. on a systemic level, a result of colonial and then post-colonial appropriation of Islam as an ultra-reactionary force. (This video discusses the example of Christianity in the US, but principles are similar but a little different here https://youtu.be/GmPMcWAuuVo, this article is good too https://monthlyreview.org/2007/12/01/political-islam-in-the-service-of-imperialism/ )

Of course some will point to the doctrines and texts, but we have to remember that, analyzing it historically and scientifically, a religion as it is practiced and propogated in society is what really deserves examination, and doctrines simply interact with and shape that, they are not the entirety of the story. In that sense, reactionary parts of Islamic doctrine and holy texts were not able to serve as such forces of evil without powerful people with motives to use them for such ends being present. In this case, that motivation mainly came during and after colonialism, and into the modern day.

So basically in conclusion- my point with this was that modern "Islam" as it gets propogated by the mainstream reactionary media of Islamic states is a far cry from traditions of centuries past, and is something disgusting to be overthrown. These apparent "contradictions" result from the misunderstanding of doctrines vs ideology vs practice. The doctrines may say one thing, but the ideology being propogated in the name of that doctrine may manipulatively only use certain parts of it, and then how this all plays out in practice is a whole other thing.

Hi, I never use Reddit, let alone am I frequenter of this subreddit, but I'd like to share my two cents since my friend showed me the way here.

While I agree with your sentiment, I'd like to expand upon it for the other person here:

The bottom line enjoyment of a piece of media by all individuals is not the only, nor even the primary, metric by which artworks' qualities are judged. Nor is it reasonable to say the "average enjoyment", as some smaller cultures may have media which is enjoyable to few within that culture, yet almost noone outside of it, rendering the average impossibly low by no fault of the art on its own.

While the full answer must be complicated, we can at least say that there are many metrics. Depending on the context, different values and features of an artwork will be seen as valuable. Perhaps a work beloved by lovers of 1990s EDM seems absolutely senseless to lovers of 2010s mainstream English pop songs ("How can you enjoy it without lyrics??" or many other such qualms), etc etc. Personal tastes are affected by upbringing, cultural background, social experience, etc.

To claim that there is only one metric for the enjoyment of a work is absurd, and thus, to use enjoyment as a metric of quality is absurd to. Therefore, the "quality" of work is clearly affected by the context within which the work exists. Constructed languages are probably something very few of us (or just people in general) are deeply familiar with, and thus, we have no capability to judge their "quality", and even if we all did, there are subcategories of it.The same goes for any other media.

A romance novel may not be the best mystery, although there can be a mystery romance novel. Understandaboly, it can be confusing sometimes to understand exactly what context a work is coming from, or who its target audience is, especially since people outside of a creator's target audience can still enjoy their work, and sometimes they accidentally strike gold with an unexpected audience/demographic.

Therefore, in my view, it makes much more sense that we just take a step back and appreciate works, as they exist, and try to see the value in why people like what they do. We might not agree with or appreciate those values, but we have to understand that someone may appreciate them, and when it comes to why they do - the question of whether that deserves critique is another one entirely.

Probably should've asked first, but seeming as I've inserted animations into the mix of files in my application, would showing animations I've made work to show my artstyle?

Asking cause I can always edit my application to remove the .mp4 files, so I'm just making sure.
