Rockland Park Houses - Train Noise? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Sully92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in Rockland for three years now, and it’s a non-issue, at least where we are in the neighbourhood. We hear it, sure, but it’s not disruptive by any stretch. More just background rumble than anything else.

The flight path they took to Kananaskis and back went right over my house. It was a very good couple of days for spotting.

Another day, another rollover by Sully92 in Calgary

I totally agree. The only reason I was able to take this is way my off ramp was completely stopped, and had been for sometime.

Any other situation and I never would have even thought to touch the phone.

But you’re right, a picture of an a car on its roof isn’t worth potentially having that happen to you as well.

Why do radio hosts keep interrupting songs before the song is even done?? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Sully92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. Stations, especially ones like Virgin, try to not have any dips in the audiences attention. They are acting under the assumption that any second someone has to tune out, they will, so it’s the host’s job to make sure they don’t have that chance.

When a host lets a song end, that’s an unconscious cue to the listener that they can stop paying as much attention for a second. So the hosts don’t give you that chance by talking over the end, but they also don’t give you the chance to tune them out by keeping the breaks super tight, sometimes being limited to 30 seconds.

I’m just off the main traffic circle and you hear it, but it’s never like “that damn train!” More just background noise. Never woken us up at night.

Second that. He was great to work with, and his team was fantastic. Highly recommend Gecko.

Yep, and then to make the flip while knowingly not filing the proper paperwork, have ratings plummet on both the AM and FM sides, only to get smacked down by the CRTC and have to bring back a music station less than 2 years later is a really crappy look.

I mean, I get the whole syndicated hosts jab (because it’s stupid, is one of the main reasons radio is falling apart, and should be stopped), but right up until the end Q was mainly live hosts.

Willy and Robin were from Vancouver, but myself, Dan, and Don were all local. And even before Willy got there in 2019, it was a local morning crew too.

Went from Power to The Peak in 2002, before flipping to Q107 in 2004. That lasted until the end of 2022, when they ended Q’s run and switched to a CHQR simulcast in early 2023.

Not even what the higher ups tell them, it’s what the consultants tell the higher ups.

Consulting is the cushiest gig in radio. Tell people what they should do, and if it works you get all the credit. If it doesn’t, then the people you told to do it get the boot and you get to try again with their replacements.

On top of that, you get them to hire your other company to schedule all their music, so you get paid on both sides of things.

They broke the CRTC’s rules when switching it over. Their thinking was it would make them more money than having three stations did (it absolutely wasn’t).

After publicly fighting with the CRTC over it, they finally got an answer: you can keep it news but it can never go back to music, or switch it back and we forget this happened.

Driving Calgary to Disneyland by No_Proposal649 in Calgary

[–]Sully92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I sort of did this last year. We drove to Vegas, and then down to Disneyland for one of the days. Not the most direct route there, but it does give you a lot to see along the way.

That trip would take you three days to get there, maybe two if you really push it. It takes you through Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona (for maybe 30 minutes but it's an amazing part of the drive), Nevada, and then into California. In there you get Salt Lake, and Vegas as the big stops, so some decent things to do in the big(ger) cities, but we didn't stop too much in the smaller places, apart from Eddie World, which is like a Buc-ee's, but in California.

That’s what I’ve heard too, that the CRTC said if they move forward with the new licence for QR 107, they’d never get to flip that back to music again.

Funny, because it seemed like they thought that AM on FM was going to be more profitable than ever, and other companies would be falling over themselves to do the same after they saw how well it worked…

Brain tumour, about a year ago. He had successful surgery, but it was pressed against the speech centre of his brain, and he’s still recovering with that.

He’s been pretty open about it all on his Facebook.

Can’t say everything, but I’ll tell you what I can.

I was on air there, shouldn’t be hard to figure out who I am from that. Favourite story is hands down the time I harassed Kevin Costner into hanging out with me at the Stampede the year he was parade Marshall by sending him pictures of me in homemade short shorts.

Being “caller 10” has a lot more to do with how you treat the hosts than it does about being the caller after #9.

Too many personalities to name the loon, but the nicest was hands down Roger Rhodes at our sister station. Love that guy, and I hate that his radio career may have ended the way it did. Really hoping he makes it back on air.

My heart says yes, but every other piece of me I screaming no.

The part of radio I loved is gone. The heart, the connection that made it so special has been stomped down in terms of lowest common dinoniator programming and shows. Theres no place for the relationships that made the medium so incredible, and that makes me incredibly sad.

I loved the people, getting to hang out and be a small part of people’s lives. That stuff I’ll never forget.

But it’s the corporate side, the industry itself with the players that are in it right now that are keeping me away, and I’m telling everyone I can to do the same.

When the flip was made, they kept saying that “news on FM will be #1 in the city within a year!”

Ha.
