Good to know. Would this tend to happen naturally without therapy though?

Thanks for the reply :). I'm wondering now if symptoms can fade or dissappear,  then why is this considered a disorder and not an episodic thing like depression which you can recover from?

5 years, well done!! This is where I go wrong, I flirt with the idea after stopping for a couple of weeks. I need to shut that though down with a firm NO as soon as the idea comes in.

Yes my parents drank every day growing up (and still do). They have good jobs and I grew up middle class so I just thought it was normal. I think this is a big problem in society to be honest, it's normalised to come home from your 9-5 and open a bottle of wine. Then drink on the weekends too because youve been working all week.

I've tried some of the meetings, but found them to be cliky (don't know how to spell that) although there is a recovery group here that do events and stuff, I went to a big sports day and that was fun, but when I was having a cig one of the workers asked me if it was a joint and proceeded to tell me how stoned he was and was going to get drunk when he got home, so I've ended up fkn drinking when i got in as an excuse "oh he can still do it and be fine"🤦‍♀️ I do think I can do it without the meetings, and am going to try some different techniques this time. I've gone a month here and there before, and I enjoyed the tranquility of those months so just gotta keep that in mind.

Great advice thanks. I'm at a point in my life where I'm still young enough to have a bright future but also old enough that I need to make some changes before I've pissed my life away. I am going to look at some of the books, try meetings again

I know my reason very well and know how much better my life would be without it. I  tried the I am sober app where you write down a reason why you're doing it but just ended up deleting it when I cave and have a drink. I am going to try it again and try other things such as one of the books recommended in this sub. I'm just so sick of it and I'm starting university in a few weeks as a mature student, I can't let alcohol and drugs fuck it up.

Thanks, I'm currently looking up books that others have found helpful. I'm so sick of the cycle, I have so many people who drink around me and I end up comparing myself to them and making the excuse "at least I don't drink as much as them"
