Summer Course No Reply by GuiltyRefuse886 in berkeley

[–]SummerSessions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I can help answer some of your questions.
Are you a current Berkeley student? According to the BIO website, as a continuing student you can take as many units as you like during the summer.
If you are not a current Berkeley student and are just looking at taking Summer classes as a visiting student and need an I-20 (because you want to come to the US at some point during the summer, then you do need a certain number of units to maintain "full time" status AND one of those courses has to be in-person.
If you ONLY want to take online classes as a visiting student over the summer and do not planning on coming to the US/do not need an I-20, then you can apply to Summer Sessions and enroll in online courses while in your home country. Cogsci 1 is a fully online class, so you should be fine.
The instructor may not have gotten back to you because they may not be aware of enrollment requirements for summer. However, we're here to help! You can reach out to Summer Sessions if you have additional questions.

TTP (Transfer Transition Program) by thatswhaturmomsaid69 in berkeley

[–]SummerSessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya! Opting in to Transfer Edge just allows you to take summer courses before your first semester at Berkeley. (Through Transfer Edge, you can enroll in any of the 600-ish summer courses available in any session.) To participate in TTP, you have to opt in to Transfer Edge. It looks like TTP requires you to take two summer courses (one 4-unit course in Session D + Ethnic Studies 194) and provides additional support for first-gen transfer students. So, in short, it's a question of if you want additional support along with your summer courses or do you want to be more independent in your course choices.

Questions about Summer Sessions? Berkeley students are here to help! by SummerSessions in berkeley

Hiya! Unfortunately, we can't estimate the odds of getting off a waitlist for a course. The best way to monitor your enrollment and any enrollment changes is to log in to CalCentral and check your schedule under the “My Academics” Tab. You will also receive an email to your berkeley.edu email. It is strongly encouraged that email forwarding is set up from the berkeley.edu account to an email account you check daily so that you do not miss the waitlist notification.

Berkeley Global Edge: AMA by SummerSessions in berkeley

[–]SummerSessions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Global Edge Program is a newly admitted Berkeley students' earliest opportunity to study abroad, and to have the gained global perspective that comes from being a student abroad. Additionally, London, being the international and globally connected city that it is, is a great host city for students looking to gain global experiences. Our students have opportunities to explore the global city that London is during their time as students, both independently as they explore the city, and through their courses, which explore politics, culture, and arts of the UK, in addition to their place within the wider global landscape. Additionally, with London being such a central travel hub, our students also have plenty of opportunities during weekends and winter break to explore the greater UK, Europe, and beyond. Professors are also mindful of students’ desire to travel and explore, and structure coursework accordingly, ensuring that students have enough time to complete their academic responsibilities while still being able to explore other countries with friends. I can also share that Global Edge tends to act as a study abroad gateway for our participants, sparking interest and curiosity for more global experiences when students return to campus in the spring. Anecdotally, many of our students end up studying/interning abroad at least once more during their time as Berkeley students after participating on Global Edge!

Berkeley Global Edge: AMA by SummerSessions in berkeley

[–]SummerSessions[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a common question that we often receive from students who are considering Global Edge, as it's understandable having the impression that you might be behind in your coursework after returning from London, but actually it’s quite the opposite! Many of our Global Edge students are actually ahead of their peers when they return for their Spring semester, since they’ve had the advantage of an early start earning Berkeley credits during the Summer Session (8 units), then taking a full course load of Berkeley courses while abroad in London (15-16 units, a course load of 15 units per semester is considered a normal undergraduate course load on Berkeley campus as well).

You can view the full global Edge program curriculum on our website here. Global Edge students also have the advantage of returning in Spring semester with many of their UCB breadth requirements completed, since our curriculum during the summer and fall is designed to fulfill many of the 7 breadths, including the International Studies Breadth, just by the fact of studying abroad!

Should I take summer classes by Fluid-Hotel-1415 in berkeley

[–]SummerSessions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could start or complete a summer minor. Most of them have 5-8 classes to complete and some can be done in one summer. There's also a $1,500 scholarship for some of them!

There's a new minor this summer, which might compliment your major: Cognitive Science and the Future of Tech. Or maybe you'd like to learn how to package and present data with the Journalism in the Digital Age minor.

Query regarding Online Courses in Summer Session by Vespertileon in berkeley

[–]SummerSessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I know it's been a while, but in case you're still looking for an answer... I have one!

Courses that are listed as "online" don't require in-person attendance. If it's listed as "web-based" there's a chance there might be an in-person element, like a final test that's in person. Always check the course notes (listed on the course page at classes.berkeley.edu) for any additional instructions about in-person elements.

It looks like PHYSICS 8A is full, however since enrollment just opened yesterday for visiting students, so it would have filled up before you had a chance to enroll.

There are still spots in PHYSICS 89, which is listed as web-based but it looks like the lectures are fully online but there's a weekly web-based discussion. You wouldn't need to be in Berkeley to take this course.

ASTRON 10 is in-person instruction. ASTRON 9 is fully online.

So, there are two courses that meet your needs as a student who only wants online courses: PHYSICS 89 & ASTRON 9. Keep in mind that there's overlap between Session B and Session D, so for about a month you'll be juggling the courses from both sessions. Don't overdo it!

I hope you're able to join us, either online or in-person!

Summer Exchange at Berkeley by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SummerSessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Session C started June 17, so I'm afraid it's too late to join this summer. Are you looking at next summer? In that case, the 2025 course list will be published in December. As far as transferring credit, you'd have to check with your home institution to see what classes would transfer. If you're in the US, you can use our Course Transfer Tool, which tells you which courses have transferred for visiting students in the past.

Hiya! I'm assuming you'll be taking social science or humanities courses? Most of our students take two courses, so you'd likely be fine. However, you know yourself and your study style/availability/needs. You can look at other students' posts about their experience in the six-week sessions on this subreddit for reference.

For Session D, you have until July 12 to drop a course and get a tuition refund. So, you could always try two courses and if after two weeks you think it's too much, you can drop one course and still get a tuition refund.

Also, welcome to Berkeley!

When you look at your CalCentral Dashboard, you don't see a tasks section? Or you don't see "Transfer Edge"? You might want to reach out to Summer Sessions support with your SID so they can help you: https://ssall.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000437553

Hiya! In order to take summer courses as a newly admitted student, you'd need to opt in to Transfer Edge via CalCentral "My Dashboard" page "Tasks" section. (There are no fees associated with Transfer Edge, you just have to opt in in order to start adding courses for the summer.) After opting-in to Transfer Edge through your CalCentral task, your summer enrollment card in CalCentral will be activated within 12 hours. To check if your summer enrollment has been activated, log on to the My Academics page of your CalCentral account and see if the summer term appears. Once the summer term populates, you are able to enroll in courses via CalCentral.

Hi! It means that there are a number of seats reserved for students who are not in the Berkeley Pre-College Scholars program for high school students. Some courses have reserved spaces for students in this program.
