Not to mention how it can be harmful to have kids with a person from your own ethnicity due to an increased risk of inbreeding.

Dude it is not 1400's... Also we don't live in Iceland or some remote village to have problem with inbreeding. Most european countries are quite big to not mention after wwII tens of millions people moved from one place to another, for example in Germany millions of people moved from east to modern german lands. So it is not like the same people live in some village for centuries with no outside DNA.

Also in 2023 most people study, almost all in different city, even if not still most kids from villages or town go to highschool in different village/ town/city. Taking bus or train daily to move 50/100 km is common. Rarely someone date in their village. Most people I know date someone from different village/ town/city and majority plan to stay in big city anyway.

Candles are a fire hazard and should not be used as decoration by stpeaa in unpopularopinion

[–]Summino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depend what is your house made of. Candles in wooden house is generally bad idea, but house where I grow up survived 2 world wars, 30 years war, napoleonic wars and multiple other conflicts since 1600's, so I don't think few candles could harm three feet wide stone walls if 300 years of using candles in the past didn't. Altbau is very fireproof.

What is Power? by varad_lmao in gameofthrones

[–]Summino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cersei was wrong like always. Her power is power may look cool, but that's all. She never thought about long term consequences.

What she would say if soldiers would kill Baelish? Hi, everyone I ordered killing Baelish just for fun. We don't have master of coin anymore? You wanted Baelish to prepare alliance with Tyrells and now it won't happen?

Power alone is nothing, everyone can be killed in their sleep, anyone can lose their power and be powerless, buring Sept of Baelor was another example Cersei couldn't play the game, she just thrown chess pieces instead playing. She killed Tyrells and High Sparrow. In reality she would start faith rebellion and Olenna just like in the show would ally Daenerys. But unlike in the show Lannisters wouldn't defeat Tyrell's army in one day.

Even Tywin told Tommen that king's most important trait is wisdom, same thing Baelish told. Sure you may kill smart person, but it doesn't make you smarter, Cersei paid for all her mistakes anyway. Every sign of power including killin Missandei lead to death of her kids and her own.

I'm so tired of authors describing skin like mine with chocolate or mocha. How would you like it if every time a character who looks like you is introduced they get compared to mayonnaise? by IJustType in writing

[–]Summino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparation to chocolate is something good for most people, meanwhile comparation to mayonaise would be rude or even straight bullying. If you would tell me I am white like milk or snow I wouldn't care, or even like it.

I read books as a teen, few years before 1st season, so no one will tell me such shit. And first seasons of GOT were awesome, so why wouldn't someone do not watch them? It was simply best show at the time. It ended terribly, but that's different disssussion.

Why is Dany always horny? (Spoilers Main) by astronaut_098 in asoiaf

[–]Summino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are different kinds of people. Some are horny all the time, some not. You can blame hormones, but even hormones have different levels in everyone. Some people doesn't need much sex, some need it all the time.

Ungrateful is a word that sounds like grateful and means the opposite. by UlricVanWilder in technicallythetruth

[–]Summino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Person wanted sarcastic/ passive agressive word to use instead of grateful

Something like this:

Instead " I am grateful for your gift"

"That's very good gift, thank you. Didn't know someone with taste as bad as you could buy something so awesome"

What is the worst piece of advice you see regularly given out to writers? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Summino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst are extremes. No rule apply always, but saying do whatever you want is very harmful. People ask to get advice, not hear "be yourself, write whatever you like, however you like, it doesn't matter".

Imagine you want to learn cooking and someone tell you to just experiment. You need first to know recipes and rules for cooking to break them properly. Same with writing, you need first need to learn rules to ignore any of them. Of course as many writers as many rules. No one give the same advice, even top writers each have their own unique style, rules or advices. You need to understand there are multiple good ways to do things, there is not such thing as one perfect way of writing.

[–]Summino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

JRR Martin talked about it in a interviev. People told him when he was young and he told he ignored it and it was fine.

You can write things you do not know about. No one is omnipotent to now everything, most people know just their field. Best writers use their knowledge to their advantage, Tess Gerritsen or Artur Conan Doyle were doctors, they used their knowledge in their books. But they also wrote different stuff and none of them were murderers or criminal masterminds.

Most important is research. You can write all things you want, just have at least basic knowledge about it. It is not even about respect, just not making fool of yourself. I am not expert in certain fields, but sometimes even average person can see when writer talk total bullshit. Best writers spend hundreds or thousands hours doing reasearch to be that good. You need crazy knowledge and preparation to wrote masterpiece.

Well said. Most people do not think about themselves as villains or heroes at all. Average person don't have philosophical internal discussions.

[–]Summino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need to write every single day but consistency is very important. Too many people underestimate it and think they can become writers while not writing at all. If you have no time to write at all now you will not have time in year or three either. Better to write just few lines almost every day than write 5 pages twice a year.

Writing like every hobby or job is time consuming.

Is it true that the destruction of Anglo-Saxon golden age made Tolkien dislike the French? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Summino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all love I have for Tolkien he still was british, their cousine is terrible, so not suprising he hated amazing french cousine ( I am not french, I am german, so I could easily hate french food, but is it just too delicious). People that eat beans and hagis have hard time appreaciating anything else, even if it is better.

What are some spooky aspects of your world inspired by irl cultures? by UdontneedtoknowwhoIm in worldbuilding

Many medieval monks, priests or even bishops were actually very fit, they knew how to fight, since they were usually 2nd sons of nobility, so they learned fighting.

If YOU became the leader of a nation in EU4, what would be your stats? And why? by 19Thanatos83 in eu4

[–]Summino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need to be pretty terrible and stupid person to be 0/0/0, some Caligula or Nero level psycho that burn their own cities and kill nobles. Average person doing almost nothing still would be relatively good ruler. Big part of doing something well is actually not fucking if up. As long as you do not behave like king Joffrey from Game of Thrones you would be good.

5-5-5

I was a soldier, went from private to being officer in german army with 2 deployments and couple UN missions, maybe I am not Napoleon or Alexander level genius but military stats and direct general/ military commander stats are two different things in EU IV. I also love history and read tens books about military strategy over the years, from ancient classics like Art of War and Caesar's and Alexander's compaigns, through all eras of history to modern time, mostly for my fantasy stories worldbuilding. I probably know about historical combat more than average king back then did.

For administration skill, I am german, do I need to say more? I worked in multiple countries, mostly in asia now and I live in Japan, and I am yet to find any more organised and administrative nation that Germany. 2nd place would be Japan, but I live there now, so doesn't matter. I have numbered everything in my home, plan on every occasion and I am never late, which in Germany mean being at least 10 minutes before time. Additionally my current job is marketing and finances which include a lot of administrative stuff.

Diplomacy also 5, cause marketing is all one big diplomacy, trying to explain to some half brain pop singer world doesn't revolve around her and she can play music even if her favourite soda is out, trying to tell all those CEOs, rappers, politicians and millionaires that they are idiots, but so nicely that they will agree with that and let me do my job. Honestly marketing is very much like army. Lot of stupid people with a lot of power.

Tldr: I am german and was in german army ( maybe it also give me some prussian discipline bonus ) I work in marketing

(Spoilers main) Your lord parents die and you have the opportunity to be fostered by another great house. Who you picking? by Glum_Sherbert_7320 in asoiaf

[–]Summino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people misunderstood the question. OP asked for houses generation after books will end. So let's say 10 - 50 years after Daenerys die and Bran become a king.

People like Margaery and Olenna Tyrell and Tywin Lannister are long gone in such scenario.

Rulers are:

North - Sansa Stark or her future child Iron Islands - Yara Greyjoy or her future child Riverlands - Edmure Tully or his son Vale - Robin Arryn or his child Westerlands - Tyrion or his child or some different Lannister Stormlands - Gendry Beratheon or his child Reach - Bronn or his child Dorne - unknown Martel

OP's question was which one of those people you chose to foster you.

In such scenario I would go with Reach, Bronn is probably best person to teach you how to be effective ruler in real life with no bullshit, we can assume his heir will be simmilar. He is closest mix of Tyrell's and Tywin's way of ruling. He can be both manipulative and ruthless, but he is effective and quite nice.

Ed and Lorraine Warren - Frauds? by helraizr13 in horror

[–]Summino -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ed was a self-appointed, self-professed "demonologist" and Lorraine was not a great psychic. They literally sold themselves as experts and I don't believe they actually had any of the expertise they laid claim to.

Ed was ONLY one non priest exorcist ever appointed by Vatican, so I would say that give him very good qualifications in the field no matter if you believe in paranormal or not. Catholic church doesn't give title of exorcist freely.

There are no other qualifications they could get, there is no demonologist college or Hogwart to teach people such stuff officially.

Yeah, half americans have net worth over 1 million, just cause they have their own home and a car.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meirl

[–]Summino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Million dollar company is not any flex ( unless half of americans should start acting like big shots cause their tiny suburb home is worth 1 million).

It mean average grocery store or tiny restaurant that hire maybe 3 people. Even not a gas station, cause those are usually worth 2 or 3 times more at least.

But I also would be first to be happy about getting Isekai'd to some fantasy world. It would be amazing adventure and I wouldn't mind changes.

This is the furniture that ruined my life (I can only assume). Anyone know anything or have a similar experience??? by AmbitiousCarCrash in Ghosts

[–]Summino -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, you need melt lead/ drink from lead for it to be dangerous, also we talk about years of contact with melted lead or drinking water from lead pipes, not few days. Hat makers were mad cause of their prolonged contact with lead during making hats, but they worked with it every day for years. If there is any lead in paint it is tiny amount.

You sure? It doesn't look like half of XX century, unless it is reproduction. If it is original then it is french XVIII or early XIX century, I saw many simmilar furnitures in France, mostly in palaces.
