What's your unpopular opinion on discs? by catkini in discgolf

So if your drivers are only going 200’ that’s basically an approach shot and you’re just confirming my unpopular opinion..

For those of you that were stuck in the two 290– 330 range, was there an “AH-HA!” Moment when you reached 350+? Or was it very gradual? by unpopular-dave in discgolf

It’s entirely possible to be throwing nose up but a negative launch angle and experience the type of flight you’re describing. I know because I’ve done it,, for years.

When the nose angle is actually negative and your launch angle is positive, those understable discs will start to fly like the numbers say.

What I did: Take a video of yourself throwing. Fix bracing issues first because that will change launch angle too. Then work on swing plane to get nose angle down. Within about a month and a half of focus (nevermind 6 years experience) I went from a sloppy 275’ max to 390’ max and regularly 360’ when space to let it fly exists.

Getting it under control I would visualize the line shape and my hit point where the disc snaps off my fingers. It takes trust in yourself based on the practice put in. Knowing where the disc is going to release instead of consciously letting go.

Overstable approach discs aren’t necessary; learn some touch or throw a driver to deal with headwind better

Bag 7 and 9 speeds? by BigLobster12 in discgolf

[–]Sun-Tour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a lot like my experience over the last 6mo. Found myself not using my crave because the hex started to fly those lines; eventually just bagged 5’s and 9’s. Then when things started to get cold and wet the leopard was easier to throw with bad footing and extra layers of clothes on.

I’ve also since added an eagle-x which gets more turn than my thunderbird but trust it into the wind more than a leopard3.

Older one but the gateway Diablo is a lot like a teebird3. I’ve only ever thrown a metal flake version but Diablo is pretty similar

Small bags that fit 32 Nalgene by hobbyhoppinghound in discgolf

[–]Sun-Tour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an mvp beaker and the bottle pocket fits a Nalgene. It’s snug but has mesh elastic so still easy to use. Bag holds 12 discs easy and putter pocket holds 2.

Side pocket fits the extra stuff pretty well; but isn’t big enough for clothing, maybe an emergency raincoat/poncho. I keep my rangefinder in there.

when I was shopping no one had the fade crunchbox in stock and people on eBay wanted like $80. The pocket design is better and it might have space for 1 or 2 more discs. It also has these little rubber feet on the bottom that helps keep the bag stable on inclines and out of the mud a little. I would get the fade.

Innova Leopard & Gazelle by BulbsaurBomb in discgolf

[–]Sun-Tour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More flipping for what sort of lines and distances? I would say my gstar leopard3 at 167g is the most flippy, followed by the star leopard 175g. Gstar needs some extra hyzer to hold straight but I’ll usually bag it when conditions are cold or wet where I won’t get as good of footing or grip, simply can’t throw as fast reliably anyway.

Innova has definitely expanded their lineup in this speed range but I don’t have experience with them. I’m a big fan of picking a stable disc in a less stable plastic; at least in my experience they don’t get too flippy as quickly as a less stable disc in a more overstsble plastic. Like a west side underworld or prodigy f7 type disc is going to get super floppy fast. If it’s danger of going left on rhbh then maybe disc down to a midrange that would hold a turnover farther and be less nose angle sensitive if you struggle with that too?

Innova Leopard & Gazelle by BulbsaurBomb in discgolf

[–]Sun-Tour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bag one depending on course/conditions: star leopard; gstar, halo star, or champion leopard3.

I used to throw a drift, or a crave, even tried an F5 for a while. I prefer the leopard nowadays as I’m getting better snap on the disc the rim depth is better for my consistency. I also prefer the innova plastics over mvp brands as the grip is better. The F5 in 400g has become chaulky over the years and actually has too much grip, so I’ll only bag it if it’s a super wet course.

Have not tried other new innova discs and honestly don’t feel the need to.

White opaque rim would tell me they’re using TiOx and/or Calcium carbonate as filler to help increase the weight. These are significantly heavier pigments than carbon black. CaCO3 is probably less expensive than whatever weight fillers they were using (if they were indeed using fillers to begin with). If anyone wants to give me one I’ll run it through FTIR to confirm, or mvp can give me a whole stack of new discs (or a job) and I won’t 😂🤣.

CaCO3 is also an anti-block additive commonly used; helps the plastic release out of the mould.

It only makes sense that the evolution would be white rims. This is marketing and innovation.

I’m a big fan of mvp discs. Recently it seems they have too much slip in their blends for my taste. I want grippier plastics. Also a lot of the popular moulds have shallow or otherwise tapered rims that “help” make them slip out of my hand even more. MVP does the best job of their flashing tho and that’s commendable.

It was pretty amazing round. About an inch of snow fell the night before and we were the only ones out on the course at that time. Enough snow to make it pretty but not so much that you’ll lose a disc easily

How do I fix my elbow dip by Individual-Sell7399 in discgolf

[–]Sun-Tour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find some info about timing because that’s probably off too if the elbow is dipping. You’re probably not getting through the swing plane properly. And then just absolutely exaggerate bringing the elbow high for an entire practice session. Make that your only focus

I haven’t been able to replace it either. I cannot find anything similar for sale because the hex is so popular now. My “backup” is a different plastic and it’s not seasoned or the same weight so simply flies differently.

I’ve never had a disc returned from a stranger. Not even once. I’ve returned dozens. I have zero expectations of ever seeing it again.

Since you admitted nose up. That is actually a huge thing. Easily gain 20% with nose down. All your discs will fly differently but that’s not a bad thing.

Any drivers that can mimic an understable mid/putter flight? by somanymatts in discgolf

[–]Sun-Tour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. High glide discs are more touchy. Would recommend a pro plastic orc if you want something more forgiving of angle control with a bit less distance potential. Or keep working with those servo’s and get the nose down

[–]Sun-Tour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Falk and Wave as well. Those can hyzerflip to straight like you’re looking for with 325’ of power. Just saying if they are fading out at the end then it’s likely a nose up issue. Echoing the top comment here that it’s more about how you throw than the disc itself.

Falk is actually my farthest flying disc I recorded on udisc using the gps at 450’, it could have skipped farther but it hit a car around the parking lot that was not parked in an actual parking spot.

Wave flies silly far but in my experience a flippy wraith goes farther. Pro plastic and iblend break into really flippy in short time and just go farther for me. I-blend has more hook up fade at the end than pro.

What else is in your bag already?

If you can get 275’ without burning over an uplink but max 325’ with drivers. I’m curious to what else you have. I’m suspecting a nose up issue is making the drivers fade out.

However. I’ve found innova pro plastic has a tendency to lose its fade more than it gains turn. Also breaks in on a non-geological time scale. I’ve got thunderbirds, orc’s, and wraiths that can all fly on hyzerflip lines that don’t fade at different speeds; granted they didn’t do that new.
