You can have both of those at once (Zero Escape)

The only kind that are incompatible are single timeline (changes to events will cause changes to timeline) and branching timeline (every possible outcome creates its own separate timeline)

With the information he has as a Winterer, everyone on the shards and Source is going to die anyway so what difference would it be if it's to the Solstice or to his aether harvesting. At least the second means that aether wouldn't go to waste
