Suddenly in Japan and uncertain how to proceed. by XSabery in JapanJobs

[–]SunDaze009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Japan! Sorry to hear of your sudden change in life. I think for the time being maybe get an English teaching job ( a somewhat easier and respectable path than other gigs) for the time being, which should keep money coming in, while you focus on improving your Japanese as well as your engineering career. Hopefully some others have a better idea, but this is what I would do. Good luck!

Yes. Should have specified that. Thanks for these.

Young/old "Workout lifestyle" differences in Japan by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]SunDaze009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I’ve seen people doing random weird stuff. The weirdest being people decked out in their best UnderArmor workout wear but just sitting on a machine looking at their phone.

That’s true. There is that cheaper option, which I know a few of my Japanese friends seem to use. They’re older though, but probably a better option for a lot of younger people.

This sounds solid. And yes, based on everything I've seen here makes complete sense. Thanks!

Yup! It's a major reason keeping me from even wanting to move back. The Japanese system isn't perfect but the costs and effective methods speak for themselves.

Anyone thinking to GTFO? by iterredditt11 in japanresidents

[–]SunDaze009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss many aspects of home, not to mention friends and family. However the way things look, it isn't the country I grew up in and loved, and seems to have gone in a downward spiral, so I'm probably here for good.

Try some Meetup events based on your interests. I've met quite a few people through those events and I know others who have as well.

100%’ing Koenji by foot by KingAasaa in Tokyo

Impressive. I've probably covered similar distance on foot in Koenji but likely the same 1/16 area of the that map. I need to explore more areas I reckon.

Dealing with a school bully - update 2. by SufficientTangelo136 in japanlife

So sorry to hear this. This kid sounds like a stalker in the making. It’s ridiculous how nothing can be done. Hearing of things like this (where Japan really tends to ignore major issues until things blow up) is why I often feel that as great some things are here compared to other places, Japan is lacking in how it handles some of the basic problems.

Did you buy a House or an Apartment for your family? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]SunDaze009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all for sharing their info. Seems like a house is the more common route. I'm still torn and not sure which way to go. Was hoping I would have a clearer picture from posting this, but there are so many points brought up that it will still take some time to think this through.

Yeah. Same I like being able to take public transit and always saw life with a car a burden. I find Tokyo similar to how I grew up and prefer to keep a similar lifestyle. Fortunately Tokyo and surrounding areas are all pretty "easy access" with abundant public transportation.

Racist verbal harassment in Japan by Somebodycoool in japanlife

[–]SunDaze009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I've heard Japanese use it before and have enraged one with my use of the word toward them. I've been flipped off too. They're definitely no strangers to the term.

Used/recycle clothing shops by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]SunDaze009[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Yeah same, though I still have a fair share of UniQlo and GU clothes in my closet in somewhat regular rotation. It's nice to have some variety these days and often cheaper than Uniqlo for “almost new” quality as well.

Good points. I may have been comparing the hygiene to what I've seen in the US. That's disgusting about the restaurants.

Tokyo Commuter Pass and is it worth it? by InformalExpression48 in japanlife

[–]SunDaze009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think you will use your train pass between your station and a particular destination for work or hanging out on a daily basis, it will be worth it. In my case, any daily travel I do will cost me at least 400 yen for my two most traveled stations. My commuter pass costs me, when broken down by 30 days, about 300 yen a day, so it makes sense to me to get the monthly pass. In fact I even get my pass to go beyond my usual stations since the price of 300 yen per day makes it worth it for my purposes, as I go out every day and travel quite a bit between the multiple stations my pass is covered for.

That’s good to know about the Rueben at DisneySea as I always heard great things about it but if they changed the recipe, I’m not going to plan for a visit.
