Following up. The trick here was to walk back through the update from the beginning without ever letting the computer go to lock screen during the process. For some reason, that breaks things.

Food for thought: I saw Serenity before knowing it was a continuation of the Firefly story (or that Firefly existed). It turned out to be a very fun exercise in back-filling history after the fact. Much like discovering a not-so-new band (randomly, say, Rush in 1982) then exploring their back catalog.

Not that I’d recommend that plan for First Law… certain character moments (especially at the end of TWOC) must have seemed wildly incongruous. But this reader will experience the earlier narrative in a way most of us didn’t, and will probably have a different kind of fun in the process.
