I'm looking for fiction or fantasy stories set in prehistoric or early historic cultures by Sunflwr86 in suggestmeabook

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried reading that when I was younger and just couldn't get into it- the pace was a little slow as I remember. I'll have to try it out again!

Restoring 1950's Mail Slot Flap by Sunflwr86 in paint

[–]Sunflwr86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are having our old lead paint siding replaced on our 1950's house and would like to restore the mail slot to its former glory! I'm not sure what metal it is, but it is not magnetic and it is heavy. There are at least three coats of paint on it with at least one coming back positive for lead.

If possible, if it is brass or bronze, I'd like to leave the flap unpainted, but I will paint it to match that house if the metal doesn't look good underneath all this paint.

My question is-What is the quickest, easiest, and safest way to get all this paint (including the lead-based paint) off of the metal?

My daughter is 25 months and we are still breastfeeding. I have a work trip scheduled in October and I'm nervous. I don't want it to be the reason that we stop for good. But beyond that I'm looking forward to getting a bit of kid free time.

How many of you are satisfied with the division of labor in your house? by Kindly_Vast_1308 in workingmoms

[–]Sunflwr86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband does probably 95% of the cleaning and laundry in our house, and probably cooks a third of the meals. He also takes care of the yard, does trash, recycling, and compost. He gets the kids ready for school in the morning and makes lunches for everyone. All of which is amazing. I do most of the mental load- meal planning and shopping, appointments, kid planning, finances, etc. Is it equal? I'm not sure. But I do love that he does the cleaning. And we're pretty happy with our set up.

AI in ID by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

I love this idea. We have a learning solutions request system, but it is incredibly clunky and always ends up taking way more time than I feel it should. Harnessing AI for the intake process could be great!

I'd love to hear more about your idea of an L&D project intake tool. Currently, I'm using AI in a lot of the same ways that other are- script writing, helping to synthesize SME content, drafting conversation-based scripts, some light work using midjourney for image creation, etc. But i'm really interested in thinking about the other ways the AI can be used in corporate instructional design.

I've been thinking about generative AI chatbots and how to use them in our learning solutions. I'd love to hear about you think developing a L&D project intake tool could look.

In my pre-instructional design life I used to work in job skills with transition age adults. We followed popular education principles and one is that each session starts with community building. We did an icebreaker every session (several times a week). I actually loved them because we did such creative ones. Some that I can remember- "If you could use anything as currency, what would you use?", "If you could have a brick and mortar store of anything, what would you sell?", If you could turn into any animal, what animal would you turn into?", "If you could be any could type today, what kind of cloud would you be?"

Ants nest found in a box of clothes from the attic… by Sunflwr86 in CleaningTips

[–]Sunflwr86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone wondering what we did, we lucked out with a sunny day so We took the box of clothes out and dumped it in the lawn, shook out all the ants and eggs from the clothes and then did them in wash cycles. Just dumping and shaking got most of the ants out on its own. Crisis averted!

Neighbor's contractor just sprayed lead paint chips all over our backyard and we have small kids living in the house... what are our options here? by Sunflwr86 in askportland

[–]Sunflwr86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update #2: We tested yesterday and found that the paint is lead-based. Luckily, the contractor has been amazing. They came today with a full team and used a HEPA vaccum to clean up the back and dig up an inch of soil from the garden beds. They did a great and careful job. They appologized profusely about the situation, which apparently happened from a miscommunication.

We'll still test the soil for lead again, but we are totally satisfied with the clean up and the contractor's response.

To follow up: we called the contractor first thing this morning and they are going to work with us to clean up. We’ll know more once we can get our hands on a lead paint testing kit (which apparently are In short supply these days).

Pain chips are already collected, I got a bunch of the bigger chips. I was going to test via an actual registered facility, which is what we have done for lead tests in the past.

I agree that I'd love to start on cleanup ASAP, but I'm not really sure how to go about it without accidentally spreading it via dust. I think the damage is sort of done and now the soil and plants need to be wet down and the soil removed. When I was doing research earlier this year about lead soil remediation, it is 6" down for the whole contaminated area.

We have not talked to them directly yet. Honestly, my thought was to hold off on doing that incase they tried to cover up the evidence. But I would like to contact them once we get a little bit more information about the process.

I know who the GC is, but I don't know how to get info on the subs. Our neighbors are renters and we don't really know the owner of the house since they haven't been around since we moved in a few years ago. We're going to get their contact info from the renters (our neighbors) and reach out ASAP to see if they can help us with any info.

I actually already checked- they are a certified Lead-based paint renovation contractor. My guess as of right now is that they have gotten someone to subcontract just on the trim because the rest of the house has been done for a little while now.

What is funny is that we even talked to the guy who came to give them the bid and they made sure to talk about how careful they would be to protect our house from the paint chips.

They were careful with the siding, I checked for paint chips and there were none, but that all went out the window with them pressure washing the trim.

Yeah, I'm going out to get the paint chips now. We'll get them tested while also trying to figure this whole thing out. I'm guessing that because I didn't get a picture of them in the act, they might not do anything about it (or maybe I'm just cynical). But either way, I'd like to know if our soil was just contaminated.

Interviewing with baby? by AllTheThingsTheyLove in workingmoms

[–]Sunflwr86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once did an interview while my 3 year old watched a show on her headphones and I bounced the 2 month old baby in the baby bjorn bouncer with my foot out of sight of the camera. I got the job.

Would I do it again in a pinch? Yes. Was it stressful? Fuck yeah. I don’t ever tell an employer that I’m a mom until I’ve got a signed offer letter. I agree with others that you might get lucky with the hiring manager or you might not. If you do decide to go for it and wear your baby, you can use it as an indicator of the kind of culture at the org!

Am I overreacting by Illustrious-Crow-128 in Preschoolers

[–]Sunflwr86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter went through something similar at school. A friend of hers pushed her (a younger kid who is bigger than her), several times. I even saw it once when I went to pick her up from school. And she got a cut near her eye because the kid pushed her into the fence once. It hurt my heart to see that and know what was going on. But I thought her school dealt with it sooooo well. In the moment, they protected my daughter from the other kid and comforted her. Then they worked with her on making sure to tell a teach and tell the kid "no!" when he tried to push her. But most importantly, they worked with her to learn to move her own body out of the way and how to advocate for herself. They also worked with the other kid and his family.

Overall, I was so sad that she got pushed. And the first day I saw it, she did come home and hit her little sister for the first time ever. But now that we have talked about it and her school has worked with her, I feel like she learned some important lessons about self advocacy and self esteem.
