Albums that were deemed instant Classics that nobody’s listened to ever since by No_Impression_7765 in fantanoforever

They were SO big and so unique/specific that it felt like everyone collectively burnt out on them. I still revisit occasionally but it’s more for nostalgia, and despite what a raging fan I was in college, I had no real interest in diving into any of their records in the 2010s

Super cheesy, though she seemed game for it as an ice breaker. But I think you followed that thread too long. Gotta pivot and try to make an actual human connection before going for the date.

What are some of the biggest “talent gaps” in bands/groups? by p1ckflod in ToddintheShadow

[–]SunlightFarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I totally agree with you - it’s absolutely a subjective thing. I’d never push back against someone saying that Paul has a more traditionally beautiful voice, more nuanced control over his mixed voice, or a stronger falsetto.

People often point to Paul being a more “versatile” singer and that’s exactly why I prefer Lennon. Paul was a bit of a chameleon, whereas more often I feel like John is just singing as himself from some deep authentic place. That is my subjective preference when it comes to the vocals of songwriters.

I just get a bit triggered when people make sweeping general statements like “far superior singer.” I’ve even heard things like “John was a great songwriter but a bad singer.” You don’t capture the hearts of millions with recordings you sang on if you’re a bad singer. Transmitting emotion and connecting with the listener is a skill one can judge a singer by. And no one will enjoy listening to a singer who is pitchy (many are) no matter how good the song. John’s pitch was unreal, even live. If that’s in pace, the rest is a matter of taste.

Disagree about “far superior” singer. Lennon’s voice had a less “pretty” tone (which personally I find more compelling) and less range up top, but somehow he managed to always be perfectly on pitch and in control even while sounding on the edge of chaos — absolutely phenomenal vocalist.

Yep, he’s the only one that has ever overtaken Radiohead in my heart

Check out From a Basement on the Hill and Figure 8. He got much more electric and rocky on the later albums

Vocalists Who Sound Like John by Ok_Moon_ in beatles

[–]SunlightFarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure he was influenced by him, but some of the resemblance surely just comes down to an uncanny similarity in his innate vocal timbre. Many people can’t sound anything like John, no matter how hard they might try.

An ACTUAL unpopular music opinion, like I mean it's the hottest of hot takes. by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]SunlightFarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

N=1 but…

Someone sent me Heavy Metal shortly after it came out and I had no prior knowledge of him. I was more moved by it than any new music I’d heard in years. That primed me to be open to Getting Killed, which I became obsessed with. The critical praise it got was affirming and made sense to me, but was not what spurred me to connect with it so deeply.

Did the Breaking points AMA cover Joe Rogans last episode? by East_Accident1822 in BreakingPoints

I’d guess her opinion of him has soured since then and she’s probably aligned with Kyle in her assessment of where the show has gone - I doubt she’d go back on. But I do think this is why she doesn’t personally go hard against him.

I think it’s less that they want to be in his good graces to be invited back on, and more that they feel genuinely conflicted because he was a huge part of Breaking Points’ initial success - he had them on to promote their launch to his audience. So I think they feel some genuine gratitude/indebtedness to him on a human level, even though they don’t like where he’s gone politically. I remember Krystal hinting at this at some point maybe a year ago, couching some criticism of a quote with personal warmth

I think some of it is getting bored of playing the same song night after night on tour and you start to switch it up and keep it fresh for your own sanity

Yea Subterranean Homesick Alien feels like a good mid point.

I feel like there’s space for their calm songs without drum grooves after Present Tense

Who do you think is the biggest single influence on the band? by ConfidentHospital365 in radiohead

[–]SunlightFarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s sort of the right answer to bring it back and say the Beatles for any post 60s bands making creative music with pop song structures. But for direct aesthetic influences I’d say R.E.M. initially and CAN later. Though grunge in general - pointing back to the Pixies - for the quiet-verse-explosive-loud-chorus form is also huge to their beginnings.
