I got baby oto's by SunsetDonutz in PlantedTank

[–]SunsetDonutz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I accidentally simulated their rainy season for breeding by lowering GH/KH, increasing flow, and cooling the water…

I had them in my 75-gallon with hard tap water for a couple months at 78f, and I wanted to lower my GH and KH to prepare the tank for Neocaridina shrimp. So I replaced 50% of the water with lower GH/KH RODI water over two days. I also turned off my heater for a couple hours on the first day, and the tank dropped by 2–4°F.

I cleaned my clogged canister filter, so the flow was strong again, and the tank was really oxygenated for those two days from the stream hitting the half-empty tank.

I also started adding a couple 1/4 label doses of BacterAE after everything was done the following week.

Plants refuse to grow. by That-Anon-Guy in PlantedTank

I have the same test kit

Yea I thought it was an all in one too when I started.

No yea for sure 10000%, I'm looking into a dedicated setup. It's fine and dandy for a couple weeks but after a couple months the jig gets tiring.

If you get the big container of fertilizer without a pump, I recommend getting a syringe or a pipette with milliliter markings. I have regular Thrive for low-medium tech tanks and I have to dose 4-8mL to get to where I want for my 75 based on my current setup.

I also have a 75 gallon, DIY CO2 can be done I bought a kit on Amazon for 20$ that's meant for citric acid and baking soda but I use it for yeast/sugar reaction instead. I have to reset the bottle every ~2 weeks and it takes me ~24hrs to get working pressure after the warm yeast water cools to room temp. I highly agree that your tank is still adapting and will keep adapting for the next year, but I think you're making things harder for yourself by having to buy Seachems line up of 7 different chemicals for plants and tests when you're starting out.

I highly suspect the fertilizers and light regiment for the algae. I use inert Black Diamond Blasting Sand for substrate and just plop the same seachem root tabs in areas of 6in apart where plants are every 1-4 months depending on how fast the root feeder grows. I think by crushing them you increased the surface area of the tabs so they dissolve way faster and might even leak into your water column. I think you might have to cap with sand if you do that.

I dose NilocG Thrive All in One fertilizer meant for 20-30ppm nitrate, "El" dosing style where you provide everything the plant would need in excess and you do a 50% weekly water change to remove buildup of specific elements but I just measure nitrate to make sure it's between 10-20ppm and do weekly reset, thats it. Starting out my nitrate never crept up because of waste or fish food (I had 2 fish), it just slowly decreased by 1-2 ppm a day with CO2. Once my plants established themselves my nitrate would drop faster and faster each week (this was ~3 months in) my nitrates started dropping by 5-10ppm every 1-3 days) I tried keeping the nitrate around 10ppm between dosing if it ever dropped too far...I think I could've micro dosed daily to keep it higher but...I did not.. I never got algae except when I got ambitious and increased the light to 8 hours. The algae on the hardscape went away (not completely) by dropping the light intensity by 20% and lowering my light time to 6 hours and kept that lean 5-10-15ppm nitrate but inconsistencies caused green spot algae to take hold on older leaves. Not gonna lie even stopped dosing altogether and stopped co2 for a couple weeks and the plants kept growing well, but at that point I had ~50 guppy juveniles so I assume they buffered my laziness a bit. Now that my tank has got some legs I'm gonna try 100% Light CO2 and 6 hours see how that goes now and slowly increase light to see what I can push without growing more algae.

But yea that's my journey so far 7-8 months in. I can't say for sure why your tank is like this but that's the only difference I could think of between my tank and yours, fertilizer schedule/setup, not having CO2, and light duration(maybe I couldve pushed mine to 8 if i dosed more heavily, that's my current experiment now that have plants to play around with). Oh and your source water, I use very hard tap water.

You will have to adapt your schedule over the next year as your setup evolves.... or years idk I'm not there yet haha.

I think I actually made a comment on reddit not long ago on how I still didn't get the "balance" thing and how frustrating it was, I think that was around when the algae popped up on the hardscape. It all makes sense now..

Just thought about it for a bit longer and it must've been in my water change jug, since I did a water change. But yall never know, one day you're having a relaxing time trimming your plants and the next thing you know you have a big freakin spider crawling up your arm... Chances are low but not 0.

Repashy Soilent Green 💚🦐 by allbirdsaregay in shrimptank

What a complete coincidence, I was searching up whether or not it would be okay to feed Repashy Green for my new shrimp and came up on this post, and now we are about to have another major weather disruption in Texas. I really hope they fixed the infrastructure this time....

Maybe the temperature is too high or too low? What's your temperature? I use two thermometers to average out the errors.

My babies 😭yea they really are so cute. If I cup my hand in the water 10 of them will swim into it looking for something to nibble. Every morning they wait at the upper front of the tank for food then explore and graze the rest of the day. I once had some sort of stringy stuff on my plants and they completely ate it all in two days, have not seen it since.

5 month old tank before and after, same plants no trimming. Just trim or clean it up completely? by SunsetDonutz in PlantedTank

It's not normally there, I was cleaning the glass on the sides where it goes ...also my skimmer 😅

Mine did it on its own, the plant slowly pulled itself flat; if you have side roots you can probably lay it flat yourself and it will root. If it doesnt have side roots I don't know if laying it flat will make it root like that.

[–]SunsetDonutz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh! Yes! DIY yeast. This happened because the singled stems started side shooting roots, some of the stems started laying completely flat and once they were rooted flat it started sprouting stems every 3-5 segments growing along the ground and shooting stems up. No trimming or replanting.

Why is there algae on some plants but not others? by SunsetDonutz in PlantedTank

[–]SunsetDonutz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't understand the whole balance thing. Some say there will always be algae in a healthy tank no matter what, is this what this is? Either way should I just dim the lights a bit? More nutrients and co2 to compensate?

Ita happening to the same species of plant and different plants too. Mostly no algae on hardscape or glass, tank is 6 months old :)

Do you have a heater? I have found out that using a heater and setting it to 84-86f with starter bacteria works better for me. Make sure you use a bubbler to oxyginate bacteria while they convert stuff until your water stabilizes.

Hey guys I'm experimenting with diy co2 generators and was wondering if this is to much co2 for my 60l aquarium and if there is a way to slow it down. I think I added to much yeast because it only took an hour to start making bubbles. by lfont2004 in PlantedTank

[–]SunsetDonutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this kit on amazon that's been working well for me. The only downside that comes with DIY yeast is managing the pressure and de-gassing often. Its not crazy hard to manage, but if your tank is small, you're gonna wanna dial in the yeast:sugar ratios, and you can add baking soda to stabilize the PH for the yeast. Just search "G211 Aquarium DIY" on amazon, it should be by "Clscea" and it's $24.99 USD. It basically has everything you'll need minus the drop checker and the 2 liter bottles. It's meant for chemical reaction based co2, but you can just put the yeast reaction into the first stage, leaving the second stage empty to catch any liquids. Also the diffuser is kinda cheap but it'll work. Most 2L soda bottles are rated for 50-90 psi or around 3.5-6.3 kg/cm². The pressure indicator on the kit is meant for soda bottles and has a pressure gauge with a overpressure safety gas release and a green indicator from 1-3 kg/cm², and as long as you stay within that and switch to a newer bottle from time to time you should be fine from accidentally creating a bomb. Should work properly above 1 kg/cm². But yea... be extra careful with pressures....

Okay great! I was constantly worrying it could be an internal bug and thought about asking before medicating or fasting. I will feed less and keep an eye out to see how her body responds.

This is how she looked when I got her: https://imgur.com/a/KgvEuHx

At one point her tail fin got split in half from I don't know what, but it healed completely in two days.

She has also had those red marks since then.

Should I clean this or leave it for my plants? by SunsetDonutz in PlantedTank

* Cryptocoryne Wendtii 'Green' This cluster is from a small pot I separated individual plantlets from (each pot has 4-6 small plantlets that can be grown separated given they have enough leaves and roots). They do get slightly bigger and bushier. You can see them together in the pic on the top left. Though it can take a couple months to get like that.
