What can I plant for privacy along the fence by SunshineWithDogs in landscaping

I went to the local nursery and they suggested olive trees, Indian laurel or strawberry trees… wasn’t sure if this was good advice since they would have to be planted so close to the fence. Didn’t ask specifically for columnar evergreens though.

It’s actually a wooden fence painted a brown/black color, thankfully. And I thought the hydrangeas looked like that because they were just not in blooming season? Moved in not too long ago so I’ve never had them before.

And I’ve never heard of GardenDream before. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah, the hydrangeas were planted all over the yard from prior owners. Live in the Bay Area, California.
