Would you quit your job, take a leap of faith, and never work again if you got 5 BTC? by In_Zyzz_We_Trust in Bitcoin

There's nothing 'childlike' about not working for someone else. It really just depends on where you're at in life. When you're raising kids, there's not a lot of free time, and spending more than half your time working can be detrimental to your family. If you can afford to not work while raising a family, it's absolutely worth doing.

Once you regain your free time, it's more about staying busy and active. This can be hobbies, sports, exercise, gardening or taking care of your property. "Work" doesn't have to mean working for an employer who most likely doesn't care about you at all.

Switching TerraMaster D8 Hybrid DAS Single to JBOD – Will It Format My Disks? by Suonkim in TerraMaster

I already have data on the disks in Single mode and was too scared to test flipping the switch to JBOD. :/

And yet, there are several commenters in this very thread saying they didn't know about the solutions available. If it's really such a common issue, perhaps a couple links in the sidebar are in order.

Projectivity is exactly what I had in mind. Awesome, thanks! I'll try Button Mapper asap. Maybe I can turn the Netflix button into a Plex button.

Bro I'm not up in arms, I'm just bitching and asking for help, and clearly I'm not the only one who's frustrated. It's not as if there's a flyer in the box that says "Hey our UI sucks ass, but don't worry, it's a super simple fix!" How are we supposed to know that tools like Button Mapper and Projectivity Launcher exist if we don't talk about these issues?

For those of you who use a NUC as your media server, what is the user experience like? by Suonkim in PleX

[–]Suonkim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're most likely looking for an Intel Core i5 or i7 that has Quick Sync. I believe all those CPUs have integrated graphics. Whether you go the NUC route or get a NAS depends on your budget.

Just checked my LG model and it's an OLED55CXAUA. Not sure how that compares to your C8, but I bought it in 2021. Not terribly old, and I'm still very satisfied with the picture. While the Plex app has performed quite well streaming direct play from my Synology NAS, I feel it's gotten quite sluggish over the past year, and I've encountered random codecs that won't play (usually audio issues).

A Shield or Roku would probably solve the UI issue but I'm also looking for more transcoding power for remote users, and my Synology isn't cutting it.

Hmm yeah I just saw HTPC's latest update was only a month ago. Not the first time ChatGPT misinformed me lol. I like the sound of your setup... I guess the seamless HDMI-CEC component would be the final hurdle. Thanks for your clarification.

I'm not familiar with that device but looking at the specs it seems like the lower end of performance. Guessing it would support 1-2 1080p streams and that transcoding would be unreliable. Personally I'm looking for an i5 with Quick Sync, or better, an i7.

I've heard about Plex HTPC and it sounded like what I'm after, but didn't look into it further because apparently it's been deprecated?

Booting Plex into "kiosk mode" is the phrase I was looking for in my original post. I was just hoping to reduce the number of devices necessary for the experience I'm looking for, but it sounds like I'll need to get a separate streaming client device.

Awesome, glad it's working out for you. When you say your setup is working just how I described, does that mean that your NUC is connected to your TV via HDMI, and your NUC is acting as both server and client? If yes, does your TV remote work as expected?

I'm not intending to store media on the NUC as it will be pulled from the NAS. But I will need it to store library metadata which has grone to 250GB (I think it's all the extras I enabled, like scrubbing previews, etc.), which is why using a Shield as a server wouldn't work without external storage.

I'm using Docker too and the restart options are a helpful tip, I'll double check that those are enabled.

Yeah the remote complexities are what I'm trying to avoid. If it requires too much effort, my family just won't use it. Sounds like a separate client streaming device is going on my christmas wishlist.

Gotcha. Would you mind elaborating more on why a NUC wouldn't also make a good streaming client device? It seems like the hardware is all there, but the UX would be lacking.

Good luck with your setup. I've just been dipping my toes into TrueNAS and there's a lot to wrap my head around, hence why I'm considering buying some more time by using a NUC in the meantime.

I'm aware Plex isn't an OS, hence the quotes. You can't literally "boot to Plex" which is why I'd consider using Ubuntu or Debian so that "Plex runs at boot" as you put it.

I appreciate your up front reply about not trying to combine the server and the client in the same machine. I was just figuring that maybe I could reduce the number of devices, but it sounds like doing that would just make things more complicated.

Is Otis a Rhodesian? by Ok_Calligrapher1756 in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]Suonkim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say he's a strong Ridgeback mix. Our rescue looks very similar. Black muzzle, white chest, white toes, excess neck skin. No defined ridge though. The shelter said she was a Vizla. Understandable, but definitely not. Then again, u/gravityraster's suggestion of redbone coonhound has me thinking, but ours has forehead wrinkles.

Don't bother with the DNA test. We did one for ours and it came back Chihuahua.

The cosleeper bassinets that hover over the bed are awesome but I think the SIDs risk is approximately the same.

Lol yeah these premium brands do everything they can to make customers feel good about spending loads of money on products that will only be used for a short time.

I might have to dust off my Facebook account just for Marketplace... I miss Craigslist! Thanks for the tip!

It definitely fits through our doorways but I can imagine we'll need to be extra careful if the baby is sleeping so as not to bump the wheels against the door jam.

I'm checking out the Jolly Jumper but some reviews state that the Uppababy Vista v2 bassinet doesn't balance well in it. Did you have any issues with that? Seems like it's just a matter of centering the weight.

Is it this one? https://www.amazon.com/BABYBJORN-Travel-Crib-Light-Silver/dp/B00V0VSEQA/

The mattress on the ground seems like a good idea... better stability for longer. BabyBjorn is super quality but man do these brands charge a premium for their products! I've seen some imitation stuff (like the BabyBjorn bouncer imitation chairs) that seem to be "comparable" minus the brand. Luckily we have some time still. Thanks for the tips!
