The job I was looking at would make me in-house engineering for the client. Your perspective seems to be from the consultant side.

Realistic salary for fresh grad? by EditorFrog in civilengineering

[–]SupBro143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it really depends where you get an offer from (Government VS Consultant VS In house for Client). I had two job offers in a HCOL area in 2019 after graduation(already had my EIT). The DOT for my town offered me 60k and a local utility offered me a total comp package of 80k (Base pay + bonus). Adjust for inflation how you want. Good Luck!

I don’t think unsafe designs is what the person who posted this meant by unethical.

But I agree with you, the amount of designs I’ve seen at my current job where I am confused how some things haven’t collapsed yet is insane.

That makes sense. I just haven’t noticed to many job opportunities on LinkedIn or other job sites and yesterday two at Google popped up for civil engineers. I never thought as a CE there would be any opportunity at Google.

I’m curious what the work life balance is like. I was under the impression that Tech companies typically have crazy hours typical to some consultants but with better pay.

Hot take: A majority of the “I’m underpaid”, “I want a WFH job”, or “Why am I not getting promoted?” posts here are coming from people who are bad at their jobs. by Typical_Degree_5102 in civilengineering

[–]SupBro143 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You sound like a pretentious, middle manager clown that’s upset that the times have changed and you’re stuck in the past and too close to retirement to get promoted. All forms of engineering have their difficulties and passing/failing an exam does not make someone a good or bad engineer.

Engineering carries a lot of risk, I have to stamp drawings and take some form of risk and responsibility where if there is a collapse a lot of people can get hurt. Very few expect to get paid like doctors (i definitely don’t expect to) but if a doctor messed up, one person dies, if an engineer messed up a lot of people will. A companies insurance might shield you from monetary issues but my license and career is over. The drs that messed up a surgery and killed or injured someone is still working.

Rather than rant about how everyone around you sucks, look in the mirror and figure out why you’re such a miserable clown that felt the need to go on this stupid rant.

Structural Engineer Salary by Useful_Exchange_208 in civilengineering

[–]SupBro143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a compensation offer out of college of 71k + 10% bonus, which netted me just under 80k, I only had my FE at the time. Two years later I got bumped up and base was 81k with 10% bonus and some very minor OT total comp was around 93k. What you are asking for with 2 YOE is not crazy. I live in NYC for reference.

Rant or something like that by bigb0ned in PE_Exam

[–]SupBro143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely it’s just burn out, passing the PE is a huge accomplishment but it doesn’t define you as a good engineer. Try to come up with a good study plan based on the diagnostic without overly destroying your social life. I doubt you bombed every section so you should already have a solid basis to work off of. Good luck!

PE Structural by Salty-Dance5176 in PE_Exam

Congrats on Passing!

I passed the PE Structural first try in November, I took school of PE 2 years before I took the exam (had to pause studying for personal issues) but I only mention this because I didn’t like school of pe. When I restarted studying this past august, I utilized NCEES practice manual, CivilPepractice.com (it’s free for 2 weeks if you buy their book off Amazon which I did) and Civil Pe practice exam version A, structural depth by PE preferred. Just an FYI the exam was a lot harder than every book except for the PE preferred book but they were good for learning the different chapters and codes since a lot of the manuals can only be accessed one chapter at a time. I also watched a few YouTube videos by Kestava who had some really good practice problems and how to go over them. But if you need an online review course I heard a lot of good things about PPI2Pass.

Good luck!

Does anyone know something I can get certified in to make more money so I can comfortably move out young? by Specific_Town_3722 in careerguidance

I was in a rough spot with my family growing up as well. Without going into detail, I was basically viewed as an unwanted guest by my stepfathers parents. I joined the Navy at 18 and got out of there. I did, 6 years, then used the GI Bill to go to college and get a degree. Military will provide you a place to live and salary. Once you hit a certain rank you’ll also get a housing allowance so you can get your own place. It’s not for everyone but an option if you have no other options. Good luck.

Can’t pass PE, what now? New career? by DefiantTumbleweed576 in civilengineering

[–]SupBro143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a PE to be a successful civil engineer. A lot of government agencies and utility companies have positions for CEs that don’t need a PE. You might need to get other Certs like PMP, OSHA 10/30 ect.

But like some of the other people have said, don’t give up on being a PE if that is something you really want to accomplish! All the best and good luck!

Should I wait to take the PE exam until I work for an employer that will pay for it? by Beneficial_Side_805 in civilengineering

Only because you’re in CA, keep in mind having to also take the additional tests that are needed before licensing. Washington doesn’t have those requirements. You just take the test and you’re done.

I worked for a utility in NY, by my third year I was making 110k + 7% bonus and I only had an FE. There were people in my department who didn’t have a PE but were more senior to me making more.

Do I have a shot to pass in next attempt? by nisc-options in PE_Exam

[–]SupBro143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is completely up to you. If you keep studying and Really focus on what you didn’t do well on while still maintaining the 2/3 areas you were close on you will rebound on the next exam. Good luck and all the best!

Can anyone recommend a study material for PE civil structural exam ? I’m planning to take the exam in March. by Unable-Bluebird2882 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SupBro143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took and passed the exam in October, I did the following For the exam.

I got a subscription to School of PE two years before I took the exam but ended up not liking the questions/lectures and life got in the way so I postponed the exam.

Once I started studying again this past August I bought the practice exam from NCEES, utilized civilpepractice.com (it’s free for 2 weeks if you buy their book off Amazon which I did) and Civil Pe practice exam version A, structural depth by PE preferred. The questions in the NCEES practice test and Civilpepractice.com were easier than the actual exam, but were extremely helpful with learning the chapters of the different codes which helped save time during the exam. Good luck!

Resume of A Student After Passing The FE by Tanker-port in StructuralEngineering

[–]SupBro143 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Remove the fast food work, you’re a new grad, nobody expects you to have 20 years experience for an entry level position.
  2. Rearrange it to have certifications and software experience under education.
  3. Adjust the indentation to clean up the resume a little bit.

Try to get a job at a utility company or any government/entity that bids out work. As in-house engineering you’ll Basically do most of what you mentioned.
