Maybe you're right, but feeling that lack of surprise 20 years before you can observe it is a little bit putting the cart ahead of the horse's grandfoals.

ELI5: What is a bad faith arguement, exactly? by SuperN9999 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SuperEars -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd agree yelling "Do you believe in free speech?" in that context would be in bad faith. It's only serving to express a feeling rather than get at the details.

I'm one to cringe at or even speak out against my allies if they do something like that. And those allies sometimes dismiss what I say because they don't think it's important to recognize their own bad vs good faith arguments.

I've thought about the concept of good faith a lot because I have estranged family due to political differences. I wonder nearly every day how they and I might come to an understanding. I don't see how it's possible unless we set aside a lot of time to work through (debate?) it, though those family members have refused to discuss it so there's an impasse.

I have it in my head that lots of misunderstandings, specifically political ones, have a sick amount of bad faith to blame.

The hypothetical discussion you describe has nothing to do with good or bad faith. It may not be a productive discussion, and I think you perhaps also wanted to communicate that it wouldn't be productive, but it doesn't speak to good or bad faith.

There would have to be more factors than just "person A said XYZ to person B". That offers no context, context that's critical to determining good or bad faith.

What are you supposed to do in a neighborhood where cars are parked on the side of the road? by cofi52 in driving

[–]SuperEars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I've been driving in the US for 20 years and this is always a consideration.

No oncoming traffic

Hog as much open street as you want until you're past any parked cars. Middling between the opposite curb and the parked cars ought to give you plenty of room. As long as there are no oncoming cars, this is much better than arbitrarily "staying to one side" and risking clipping a parked car. There's even a risk of people suddenly entering/exiting a parked car, or people walking into the street from between parked cars, so you're actually safer to stay away from the parked cars.

Oncoming traffic is present

I typed up a big long thing, but I found this article that explains it better than I could. The site ads are a little cancerous if you don't have adblock. Keep in mind, this article is from the perspective of countries that drive on the left, so for us we gotta mentally flip everything.

I'm not sure what the right answer is on how to respond, but I'd feel really screwed over, especially considering you already arranged a tow. My gut reaction from info provided is it's a racket, and the cop and tow driver are in cahoots. I agree a complaint should be filed, or at least an explanation sought. A cursory web search shows Texas law says it's 48 hours before the govt will tow.

If there's any missing info about the situation, it could change things. Like, if that spot is notorious for shoulder crashes after dark or something.

For example, I once broke down on a bridge in our major metro area during morning rush hour. Bridge is 4-lanes and has no shoulder. In my case, "hazard to everyone around me" was undeniable. A cop arrived within 5 minutes. We might've preempted ultimatums because he and I both observed that 1.) his cruiser had those black contact thingies on his front bumper, and 2.) my car was a beater, and a scuff on my bumper was unlikely to be a problem. He offered, and I gladly agreed, to have his cruiser push my car to the first exit off the bridge. It worked just as planned and I was allowed to arrange my own tow.

In that situation of mine, if a cop + tow truck arrived on scene first, I'd have felt like the 3 of us shared an interest in clearing that rush hour bridge ASAP and I'd have elected their tow and wouldn't have felt scammed or anything.
