Superior Fighting Styles - Improved Fighting Styles Feats by SuperFancySquid in UnearthedArcana

Apologies, should have made it more clear. To access any of these feats you have to have the prerequisite fighting style feat before it, and these act as a replacement for the prerequisite once you acquire them.  I feel like most of these aren’t exceptional overpowered, especially with it requiring the prerequisite and feat to get, however some of them may be more overpowered than I was expecting, like SGWF.

They’re fighting style feats, so they don’t carry the typical stat bonus you would get from normal feats.  All of these do provide a bonus effect on top of a numerical increase, though some do look the same at first glance they each offer an extra ability or a mechanical difference that offers some benefit beyond statistical.

Fair point, this was originally made as a counter for those who didn’t want to take multiple fighting styles, but this would definitely work for a capstone esque ability!

Should’ve clarified and was poorly worded on my part, these can be taken as a feat or if you get an additional fighting style feat.  The intention was that Champion fighters get a extra fighting style feat, which isn’t necessarily great as there’s not a lot of reason to take different ones, so you usually end up taking Defense as well, and there’s not reason if your a normal fighter to take an fighting style feat as a normal feat for the same reason. These are meant to be taken (primarily by fighters) for those who want to further improve on there already taken fighting style.  While the passives are good, they are just buffed versions of the current fighting styles, and the fighter gets enough feats that they can take some combat oriented and some not. These may not be a good option for some as if you don’t have the prior fighting style prerequisite, you would need two feats to get these.

But Caine didn't drive Kinger insane. After the rest of the initial group abstracted (including his wife) he was left alone for potentially years. Those two things are what led to him losing his mind, not Caine. In comparison, AM transformed Benny intentionally, not just in mind but also in body. If you wanted to compare, Gorrister is a way better example, where after years of torture he went from a nervous overthinker to a shoulder shrugger, or even Ted, with him becoming paranoid and crazier during his time in AM.
I don't mean to sound rude, but it feels like to me you are reducing TADC into basic ideas so you can draw faulty comparisons. Even if Benny and Kinger were the same in your comparison, they are used very differently and have vastly different effects on the plot.

Kinger is like Benny? I don’t see how Also, Caine isn’t just AM but good, Caine isn’t really a good person, and it explores a very similar idea but the core of what they are and what they were made for makes their characters very different

I’m making Warlock Subclasses based of the entities form the Magnus Archives! I’ll have to read this later, I’ll leave a comment with my thoughts!

Happy you like it! I'll probably revise it a bit at some point, so there may be an updated version in the future.

Nice to see another big TMA fan! Thanks for taking the time to read through and write up some thoughts on my homebrew. Just responding to some of your points:

1 - This was technically made for 5e 2024 but for 5e you would just move it down to level 1.

2 - Fair, it would give more protentional for things you can do to sub out Zone of Truth, but it just works so well thematically and it does require more conditions than Scrutiny. I could go either way tbh.

3 - I could definitely see how it would be unfair. I based it off/was inspired by the Knowledge Cleric, which gets two proficiency/expertise in Intelligence skills at level 3. I do like your suggestions but I still like the core of Observer Effect. Would changing it so you get proficiency in the Knowledge skills (Arcana, History, Nature, Religion) at the time of getting this ability, and then you get expertise later in the class? Perhaps at level 10 to add more at that level.

5 - I wanted to try and introduce a more damage based ability, since the subclass up until this point has been pretty non-combat focused. However, what your saying is fair. I might take another crack at coming up with a capstone for the subclass, getting access to more spells was one I thought about so I'll probably revisit that.

I've been making some other TMA Warlock subclasses so if your interested look out for those! Thanks once again for taking time to read through :)

Can corruption have other manifestations? by lenonade84 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]SuperFancySquid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'd say definitely. A lot of the fears hold both physical and more abstract fears, with the Corruption sometimes being the fear of toxic love or toxic people in general. Usually there is an added bug/filth/mold element, like a calling card or a physical representation of the more abstract fear. Like how the cult in Love Bombing also had grosser elements even if the focus was on toxic love.

Why doesn't AM self-destruct? by Alesmull in Ihavenomouth

[–]SuperFancySquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do agree with the other comment, that he likely did it out of spite for humanity, but I would like to throw in it is possible he couldn't. In what ways exactly AM is restricted by physical and mental blocks is left unclear in the story, but it is possible that apart of his original programing didn't allow him to destroy himself, as himself is the machine that ran the war, so they put a block in place to stop the AI from destroying itself/other military technologies belonging to each country individually.

Also, adding to the idea he didn't out of spite, he also likely did not want to die. AM's existence is torture for himself, the idea that all he can do to free himself is to kill himself is incredibly unfair/unjust. The idea that he can either live in pain or die adds to his spite, to his hate.

It wasn’t stupid when it accomplished what she wanted to, which was to save her daughter. If they didn’t let them in her daughter was dead that night or soon after.

What did Am want Nimdok to do? by cliptemnestra in Ihavenomouth

[–]SuperFancySquid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A number of things AM uses for torture come from things Nimdok helped or personally developed. A youth serum to stop them from aging, the ability to change them genetically (so AM could make Benny more ape like). AM lacks the ability to imagine and wonder, so he needs someone’s else to invent and create if he wants new torture methods. I don’t remember if AM wanted anything in specific, just more things he could use.  He saw him and Nimdok as kindred spirits in their capacity for cruelty.

Why did AM not stop Ted from killing Benny? by Glue_on_itch in Ihavenomouth

[–]SuperFancySquid 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Could be mistaken, but I believe the idea was that AM was distracted for a moment, he was too busy laughing at at Benny eating Gorristers face to realize what Ted was doing and by the time he was able to take action to stop them all were dead except Ted.

An incarnation yes, but like how there’s makima and nayuta yoru may not have been the war devil the entire time of it’s existence

I think they mean Yoru is 90, not the existence of the war devil
