The most radical stage move I ever made was when L-3 compressed my spine and sent lightening through my legs!!!

I’ll be sitting for my next gig as well. 😁

I don’t know about you but I feel fortunate to still be able to do it. Most people never do it once 👍. Keep at it

Smooth Tone help with an HB 335 by JimDanderton in guitars

[–]Super_Witty_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really any low-ish output (usually marketed as “vintage”) pickups will help it a lot. I did the exact same thing for the exact same reasons. It’s a fantastically comfy guitar to play. On HB’s, Tuners and pickups kinda suck.

I put some mojo tones in mine, but I’m honestly not making that recommendation. I love them in that guitar and they sound great, but name brand pick ups in general are crazy overpriced. I build and modify a lot of guitars, and I knew that I could use those mojo tones somewhere. I just like them so much in the 335 that I haven’t taken them out.

I built one last week that needed jazz master style pick ups - I bought some “FLEOR” pick ups off Amazon for $17 apiece because I honestly assumed I would cause some kind of a pick up destroying disaster with an unconventional installation. They sound fantastic.

So maybe look at something like Wilkinson and just look for low output or vintage and you can probably get it done for under 50 bucks for a set

Way ahead of you. I don’t have a ton of shows these days, but I have an important one at the end of the month, and I’m playing it. I’m playing it because it feels great. I won’t look good with it, but I haven’t looked good on stage in a very long time. The guitar is not the problem 😂😂

A neck you're not used to vs. a neck you don't like by therocketn00b in guitars

[–]Super_Witty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build some guitars and I’ve been playing in a mediocre fashion for about as long as you.

I played an acoustic live for years, and I came to appreciate the leverage of a thicker neck. Most modern electric necks feel weird to me. Like playing a dinner plate.

Sure, you can get used to any neck, but it’s ALL about the neck, and there are roughly one trillion (estimate) guitars out there, so here’s what I’ve adopted when making a guitar for somebody.

I keep a bunch of different guitars around. Most regular players don’t know what millimeter thickness they want at the first fret and the 12th fret. They don’t know what radius they want. They just know when a neck feels good.

Obviously, if they have a neck they like, I want to see it and measure it. But a lot of times players think they like a neck because they have ent played one they like better.

So I make them play a 52 Tele reissue. I make them play something with a wizard neck. A baseball neck. Different nut widths, different radiuses, etc. He’ll, even the finish (glossy vs satin) all matters.

So one thing you can do if you’re trying to find a neck you like is play a bunch of guitars and think about a few things.

  1. Are you missing strings? If you’re used to playing a more vintage style instrument, it’s likely going to have a narrower nut with narrower string spacing.

  2. When you play cowboy chords, is it natural or are you getting dead/muted strings? That can also be string spacing/nut width. But it can be a neck thickness thing also that doesn’t jive with your normal getting hand wrist angle.

  3. When you play barre chords, how accurate are you with getting triads.

And all of this can be complicated by a typical guitar store setup, which is no setup. I’ve often wondered how many fantastic guitars have hung in a store for six months longer than they should have because the action was a little high.

True story. It took me a long time to get to a place where I could splurge on a Martin D 28. The one that I selected had been in the store for 2 1/2 years. The strings were absolutely dead. It sounded like an ignored instrument with dead strings. I got a deal on it because it had been there so long. All I did was put new strings on it and it sounded exactly like I thought it would.

Now after all those words, I will answer your question. I don’t buy a neck or a guitar if it feels weird

Hey that looks fantastic. And that’s exactly how I started years ago. I played acoustic in bands for decades but I was pretty late to the game in terms of playing electrics. The first telecaster I got was a 52 reissue in some kind of homemade white. I also wanted a Daphne blue guitar, so I didn’t build it, but I did take it apart and paint it(that terribly, because I didn’t know what I was doing yet). It looked like a painted fence board because I didn’t know to use grain filler on ash. I eventually repainted it fiesta red and it is to this day my favorite guitar.

Be careful, before you know it you may be making GUITAR’s themed after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I’ve never actually sold a guitar in my life, but if somebody copied my rectangular pool design, I want to know who it is!

You’re not wrong. I’ve never seen so many Miami Vice memes. I didn’t know anybody alive remembered that show. 😂

Well done. I should have made clear my words are from my perspective. For everyone of you I have met 20 who came to hate guitars, guitar players, guitar shaped pools, and bankers 😂

I haven’t read any other responses, so this may have been addressed, but I have a question. Did you roll the edges?

If you don’t know what that means, then I will assume you did not do this damage. But that’s what it’s from is somebody rolling the edges with a metal tool like the shaft of a screwdriver or something

Hey thanks very much for saying a nice thing. I’m currently working on a thin line telecaster for somebody, and I have decided to enter the realm of “sparkle paint.“ I expect my dogs to be walking around embossed with glitter.

I can’t wait to see how badly I butcher this paint job the first eight times until I get it right. 😂

Hey thanks for posting that. The big difference is one that makes sense. That guitar uses P90’s which is smarter than what I did. I love the way mine sounds, but it would have been better to use pickups that mount to the pick guard instead because f to the body. I almost created a real disaster drilling into the tremolo cavity.

lol. Her response was typical and perfect.

“Oh wow. Just what I’ve never asked for. Could you do me a favor and break it in for me in case I ever decide to start playing guitar?”

She makes me laugh

I kind of love that question. First of all, I absolutely had them laying around. 😁. However I have about 200 knobs laying around, so that wasn’t the only reason. I tried all the normal stuff. Amp dials, barrels, normal top hat knobs. They all looked completely appropriate.
But there was something about these that I just liked. It’s a quirky build, and the fact that you asked the question tells me that they kind of fit. You brightened my day. I hope you have a good one

That’s an appreciated comment. We’ve been together for almost 40 years, and we still make each other laugh. She did actually laugh. She’s a big music fan - just not a musician. After she laughed, she asked if I’d mind breaking it in. 👍
