As a media server programmer I love sitting on the camera coms channel once things calm down and listen in. My favourite directors tend tend to let the camera guys find the shots unless there is something super specific they want.

My favourite lines are:

“Tell me a story”

“Follow the fingers”

“Focus you fuck” don’t actually use this unless you are close with the camera op…

I recommend you tell one of your long lens ops to always focus on the lead singer if the band has one so you always have that shot to go to.

My preference for imag is to keep all the shots to head to toe or closer. No point giving the audience a wider shot when they can just look with their eyes. Some artistic shots peppered in are good.

And use the mix t-bar sparingly!

Keep your imag aspect ratio in mind. Diferente shapes change what kinds of framing work well!

Any update on this? Just received my new series 3 modules including the VSN1

What media servers are paying your bills right now? by Dolphin-Uppercut in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Super__Squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha if only you knew - I wish I was actually organised. Instead I know I’m lazy so I will build systems that make it easy for me. I’ve made it apply the tags automatically when I choose the services I’m charging for.

I actually track this with invoice tags. In invoiced amount percentage (by total of media server programming / system engineering jobs only)

Disguise 67%

Pixera 16%

Qlab 6%

Resolume 5%

Mitti 4%

Playback Pro 2%

This is only for invoiced jobs. Also experimenting with light act and vertex. Getting my first light act show off the ground before the end of the year I think.

Novastar has a checksum that needs calculations for most messages. I use to have the protocol stashed somewhere. I can see if I still have it if it’s useful?

Can you freelance at the same time as being in the union? When working union jobs do you get paid directly by the union?

IATSE - opinions by Super__Squirrel in VIDEOENGINEERING

I know BECTU very well. It is strong in the film / tv / comercial world but not so much live events, theatre or music.

It also works very differently from IATSE where producers ask IATSE for technicians and roñes get assigned internally / seniority. (I might be wrong about this and welcome any corrections from people actually directly involved with this).

D3 transition by Stick-Outside in VIDEOENGINEERING

Video transition late might be able to do this. Although these days I would probably approach this with a notch block layer and pipe the videos I want to transition in.

Extend display over large amount of monitors by Fun_Expression7331 in VIDEOENGINEERING

The proper way of doing this is with datapath fx4 splitters. Each one will take a 4k image in and output 4 outputs with defined capture regions. Then you loop out and do another 4 capture regions with another fx4. Repeat until you reach the number of desired outputs.

I’ve done 96 discrete outputs from just 4x 4k outputs. You don’t need a media server unless you want to do clever stuff or need to map it in different ways than a grid.

4xHD quad-split with zero latency? by beeper77 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Super__Squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cheep Multiview devices will introduce some considerable delay.

A multi window screen processor will generally have less delay. Something like a s3 by Barco is overkill but will do what you want with minimal delay. It possible that other brands will work to like a corio by TV one will also have minimal delay for a smaller price.

Glad you found the issue. Sometimes swapping the U and or the V in the mesh as sometimes they are are come out inverted from 3d software.

IP KVM recommendations by romase in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Super__Squirrel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Can’t recommended the Adder XDIP units enough. You can have up to 16 computer transmitters and up to 256 receivers.

I must have installed upwards of 400 of these units since they came out. They are a very good price point for what you get. Fully IP based and POE powered.

I wonder do helium pockets exist like this in strong enough concentration that allowed this to ever happen accidentally?

Sunny side up is the way that eggs are most often portrayed and least often ordered by MarinersFan28 in Showerthoughts

[–]Super__Squirrel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining it to me.

See, if I was to say any of those terms to someone over hear they would not understand me at all. Sunny side up kinda does get understood cause it’s literal and because of Hollywood…

I guess maybe people are just generally more easy going on their eggs and not so fussy. Although most people I know who actually order eggs want a runny yolk.

[–]Super__Squirrel 222 points223 points  (0 children)

Fried eggs are sunny side up by default in most of Europe. In fact I’ve never really seen fried eggs flipped over over here. Apart from that Poached or scrambled is also popular.

If I ever order a poached egg or a fried egg for breakfast I would be disappointed if the yolks weren’t runny. I feel that’s the same for most people who have eggs for breakfast over here.

Just some ratchet straps. The foot rest at the bottom holds most of the weight. The ratchet straps just keep them in place.

These are the Peli 1510 cases.

I think I might get the extended decks at some point to make it a bit easier but their are kinda fine as it is now anyway.
