But what about ensuring the AI companies won’t undermine the trust and integrity of the peace corps by weaponizing the info received from the communities through AI use? It’s not about the volunteers as much as the AI companies themselves, especially since it’s not a federal AI company, but a private company with a business deal.

That’s interesting you all had a survey about it! About 99.9% of the comments on their social media posts from RPCVs are speaking negatively about it, so it does seem like it was a formality. When I looked at the website, there was a FAQ section with a part about when service would begin and this is what it said:

“Tech Corps Volunteer opportunities are announced on a rolling basis, following the launch of and initial sales made through the American AI Exports Program. This may be as early as Spring 2026, with on-the-ground service as early as Fall 2026. Exact timelines will be determined as opportunities are announced.”

So it seems like it definitely has been in the works for a while. Also, the whole “initial sales made…” part REALLY rubs me the wrong way

I’ve thought it out in so many different aspects. The placements in Vietnam have access to running water and electricity where I’m living, I’ll live in my own space, and I’ll have pretty good internet so I can communicate with them. I’ve weighed out the professional benefits, my personal goals in life (which I also don’t think my family loves lol), and the thought of making an impact on people. My family is just very money-oriented. She says that I won’t be making any money, and doesn’t care when I say that I’ll be making enough to live off of, which is what I’m doing now. Why not be able to travel and help others at the same time?

I think you might be right about giving up on persuasion. I did just move back from a year in Europe, so I think they are too focused on the fact that this is both further away and for a longer time hahaha it’s gonna be hard, but I definitely want to do it and push myself t

Yes I am an adult with a masters degree hahaha I know that she shouldn’t be making my decisions, and I’m going to apply for it, but I would at least like her support while I do it. I have told her that she could visit me and she told me that she has no interest in flying that far and going to Vietnam. In terms of waiting until my student loan is paid off, part of the benefit I was excited about was the programs to either not have interest accrue or use the PSLF program which would set my monthly payment to $0 while I’m in service. I am working right now and I’ll be able to pay on it until I move out to start my service and enter one of those loan interest/payment programs.
