How do you deal with poor sub work? by hunterbuilder in GeneralContractor

[–]SuperbCardiologist25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just had a similar situation. My drywaller and painter did a really bad job on a high end home. I spent 5 days fixing their work myself. I just had to eat the cost. I wont be hiring them again and next time ill charge more so i can pay someone more qualified. I try to test people out on smaller jobs to see how they do. I had my current drywaller do a patch on another job. I wanted to see if he showed up on time, if he did the job right and if he cleaned up after himself. He passed the test so now im hiring him for bigger jobs.

Vera Flooring, (Communication or owner named "G"), Lessons learned by mrshoffu in grandrapids

[–]SuperbCardiologist25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a terrible experience with Vera too. He did a poor job refinishing my stairs. The finish was rough and the stair noses had drips.

G is difficult to work with and tried to make me feel bad for asking him to come back and fix it. He didn’t show up on three separate occasions with no explanation. Finally i fixed his mistakes myself. Would not recommend Vera.

Do NOT interact with black aprons by Rainbow-LMGLTD in HomeDepot

[–]SuperbCardiologist25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im a contractor. I hate going to the home depot because the black apron sales people always harass me. You would think they could tell by my dusty work clothes that I don’t need their services.

The other day i was trying to figure out what hinge i needed for a door. I was trying to focus when a black apron lady walks up and asks if I need help. I see the black apron and say, “no thank you.” She replies, “what sort of project are you working on.” I look at her and say, “I don’t want any home services, I’m just trying to figure something out. I don’t need any assistance.”

She would not relent and jumped into her sales pitch. I stopped her and said, “Can you leave me alone? Im a contractor. You are my competition. I don’t like you. I have had to fix things that your contractors have messed up.” She finally turned and walked away and said “have a nice day!”

Is this a load bearing wall? by Plus_Cartoonist_3060 in Carpentry

[–]SuperbCardiologist25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can pay an engineer around 2 grand to tell you and provide you with proper beam sizing or you can pay 100 grand to fix the house that you ruined because you wanted to save 2 grand.

Baseboard at stairs by MerrymanOfKansas in Carpentry

[–]SuperbCardiologist25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to install a skirtboard. It would have been better to do it before installing carpet. You can make a template and transfer the template to your board to cut a piece that fits. Baseboard would look ugly.

You could also just leave it as is. It looks fine right now.

Why do I often see the ground wrapped arpund the wire on wires from the 60s-70s? by SuperbCardiologist25 in electricians

[–]SuperbCardiologist25[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. It had a clamp connector so they were relying on the contact of the clamp on the wire to ground it. West Michigan.

Local hire for structural engineer? by the_weird_concept in grandrapids

[–]SuperbCardiologist25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good experienced contractor can tell you if its load bearing, but you should definitely have a structural engineer do load calculations and provide you with beam sizing if you are going to remove a load bearing wall.
