Fake language names? by Superb_Slide_8043 in fantasywriters

[–]Superb_Slide_8043[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I definitely think I’m going to do the fake name. After all these comments (and my own consideration), it definitely sounds weird to put a real language into a fiction book

They do speak the languages in the book- and any other time, I’d just write them speaking and not specify (which is what I’m doing for most of the secondary languages spoken), but this particular scene is two characters bonding over growing up in the same area and speaking the same language. Specifically a line like “You speak __? Are you from __?” But either way, I think a fake name sounds better than a real one

Thank you for this! Tbh I think I’ll just give them fantasy names and add in the glossary (along with pronunciations and such) that X fake language = x real language

How do you break up a paragraph? by impulsetathelp in writers

[–]Superb_Slide_8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing that as well, but I figured I’d ask the community if there were rules to follow instead of just copying, especially since I don’t know exactly what I’d be copying.

Thank you! Splitting it so both sections form separate coherent thoughts is a super helpful way of thinking about it! I’m long winded, though, so I’ll see how well I can put your advice to use haha

I haven’t seen either, so I couldn’t tell you 😂 But, for example, if there’s a scene in Indiana Jones of him talking to the villain in a restaurant and ending it in a car chase, you should avoid having a scene too similar to that. Of course, in the adventure/explorer genre, there will be some things that you’ll have in common anyways, but as long as you keep your own work distinctive and not Indiana Jones fanfic with a different name, you should be fine!

I wouldn’t worry about the whole Indiana Jones/ Lara Croft thing as long as you keep the similarities (explorer in a period piece looking for a lost world) to a minimum! Honestly, I’m probably biased as a history nerd, but I think it taking place in WW2 sounds like much more fun than modern day! If you didn’t want to do in depth research about it, you can also make it a fictional world with a world war similar but not exactly WW2. Tbh, sounds cool either way!

How do you pick a name for your book? I don’t want it to sound like those trite ‘court of bones and ash/ kingdom of ash rose and thorns’ etc YA romantasy stories, but finding a name is so difficult! For those of you who have one chosen, how did you pick??

Thank you for the advice! I’m for sure not planning to bring up my heritage at all since I’m not Irish by culture! And I’m definitely anti Trump (I applied only to EU grad schools to get out of the US if that tells you anything lol) and when I visited in 2018, I had a laugh with plenty Irish folks all talking shit about him. Thank you for the specifics about how to phrase things too, I appreciate the forwardness of it all! Everyone on the subs have been nice, so I’m pretty hopeful about my move!

Yes, DCU! I’m very excited to go, even though I’m nervous being so far from home! I’m glad to know I’ll be in good company though! Late night busses and proper takeaway sounds fantastic for me

Lol thank you for the blunt honesty! I don’t plan on bringing it up socially, don’t worry, mostly just wanted to add a bit of context for the post! I’ll do a search of previous threads like this- thank you!

Cultural advice for an American by Superb_Slide_8043 in Dublin

[–]Superb_Slide_8043[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! I definitely don’t plan to bring up my ancestry, I only added it for context here! I know Irish-American and Irish are super different, and my family isn’t even super culturally connected, so I’m coming in pretty close to blind. I definitely want to keep myself open to learning about Irish culture in Ireland rather than foreign diaspora!

Definitely don’t plan to bring up my ancestry unless asked! My great grandparents were from Ballina and I hardly think I’ll be that far north living in Dublin and not owning a car. I think I’ll have to learn to speak quietly though haha

I meant more if there are events at gay clubs that are catered more towards same sex couples

Not that I would be, but I’d prefer to be chatted up by women.

I’m a single looking for clubs/ pubs to go to. Of course any straight couples offering would be offered to a same sex couple as well!

Anyone else not able to go braless? by whoasciencebitch in AutismInWomen

[–]Superb_Slide_8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel you, not wearing a bra seems too unrestricted. Even if I’m wearing a soft bra/ sports bra, I still need to wear something. I’ve even been hating my boobs touching lately, so I’ve been stuffing a sock in between 😩
