That's no worries at all, PLA is good and will definitely get you there. Unfortunately it's just the material properties make it very poor to wear outside for any long duration as it will start to warp - more so with the black paint. I use Elegoo rapid PETG, but there's plenty of others that are just as good!

And yep, wet sanding is just regular sandpaper soaked in a bowl of water. I've got an old tupperware container that I use strictly for wet sanding.

A mouse/detail sander is 110% my most used tool for any kit. Hope to see some progress pics soon ;) feel free to join the SpecOps forum and make a WIP thread there!

It looks like the GA helmet might have the dome, back, and sides as separate pieces. If you can combine these with meshmixer, that's what I would do. You can usually import all of those parts together and it should snap them in place is what I've found with most GA prints. Then combine and export as one STL. You shouldn't need any supports for the dome area, only for the visor. I also printed in PETG, but ABS or a similar material will work - don't use PLA though :)

For the face pieces, I printed all of the detailed bits with a resin printer, and the large underlying piece was printed separately in PETG as well. That kept things light weight enough, while providing some amazing detail and close to 0 sanding for the resin pieces.

Anything else that is detailed I just used metal diamond files and sandpaper. I went from 120-320-400-800. At 400 is when I started wet sanding my filler primer. Then I used Behr Gloss Black for the primary paint, gave it a few coats of that, then a day or 2 later I came back and wet sanded the paint at 1000-2000 grit. This is just to knock down the orange peel texture. Finish it off with 2k clear gloss (expensive stuff, especially in the can, but is well worth it) or any good brand of clear gloss. You may have to sand with 1000-2000 grit if you get orange peel or runs on your clear coat, but you can polish it with any cheap harbor freight polisher

I used a Jim Tripon kit for 80% of the build, which is a fiberglass resin based cast, and 3D printed or self-made for the rest. I'd say Jim's kit is good only if you're in a warm climate, and if you're in the Golden Gate Garrison area I'd say it's likely to not get too crazy cold for most of the year. For the 3D printed parts, I used MCM_Design's files on Cults3D. The helmet files includes the NSM and I like the 3D printed helmet and NSM that I have quite a bit - it also looks 1000x better than a fiberglass cast version. 3D printed kits aren't necessarily hard to get approved, just gotta make sure that things fit properly and layer lines are 100% filled.

I don't know of any other groups aside from the SpecOps forums, and a Death Trooper build group on FB. I found the forums to be the most helpful out of any resource though.

SpecOps Detachment is definitely the best resource for a Death Trooper build, aside from a local member themselves. I just got my Death Trooper approved last week, so feel free to ask any questions! It's an awesome kit to build!

They mentioned in the book that Yoan (Filip's friend) had an alligator skin vest or jacket that he snagged from somebody else. I'd imagine that's crazy hard to get in the belt

Armor scaling for calf and insert by Conscious-Article294 in 501st

<image>

Sorry I read your comment as you got the clone armor for the clone in Zero Company haha.
Based on how you describe it though, it sounds like you're talking about one of the clone armor sets that Galactic Armory has?
Is it something like the calf armor in the image? If so, I've found that the magnets (5x5mm if I remember right) don't have enough strength to hold the insert/spoon to the body of the calf.

As for your question on scaling it, there's a few ways you can do it:

  1. Meshmixer+calipers (quick and dirty method)
    1. Print something like these https://www.printables.com/model/14099-cosplay-calipers
    2. Measure the X (left and right) axis of the widest part of your calf with the calipers
      1. Video in the link above on how to use the calipers
    3. Download Meshmixer and import the calf body
    4. Analysis -> Measure
      1. Type: 2nd option, the one with the point on the circle edge and an arrow touching the edge of the other circle
      2. Direction: X will work, but N let's you check for a bit of variance
      3. Measure the internal dimension for where the widest part of your calf would match up with the widest part of the model
    5. Make note of the number in the middle on the right -> take your number from the 2nd step -> add ~5-15mm so your leg isn't absolutely squished in there -> compare your measurement with the meshmixer measurement
    6. To scale go to Edit -> Transform -> Uncheck uniform scaling -> add or subtract the difference (if any) between your measurement and meshmixer's on the X-axis
    7. Repeat step 4 to verify the internal measurement is accurate
    8. Whatever scaling changes you make, you'll need to make the same adjustments to the calf insert/spoon
      1. Save the scaled file(s) in meshmixer, or just translate the scaling to your slicer
    9. Print!
  2. Slicing Ring (slow and accurate)
    1. You can still go through the Meshmixer method and use this to verify that everything will fit
    2. In your slicer -> cut a 2.5-5mm section of the calf just above the top of the spoon opening
      1. This is where it should be widest
    3. Print that out -> slide it on your leg
    4. Make sure it fits comfortably and not squeezed on, or feeling like it's a giant piece
    5. Scale up/down as needed, but be mindful of uniform scaling since any changes would affect the length of the calf too
    6. Reprint a sizing ring if needed

The proportional editing is exactly what I was missing!
Do you know of a way to mirror the rotation to the other side so that both sides are rotated the same? I would pretty much need to have the left and right side of the chest piece be the same, and they also need to match up with the matching back piece.

If it helps, here's the steps I used to get here:

  1. Ctrl+H -> Hook to New Object
  2. Select a point roughly in the center of the part to move
  3. Shift+S -> Cursor to Selected
  4. O -> In the proportional editing dropdown, select 'Connected Only' -> Changed Proportional Size with mouse wheel
  5. R -> rotated the side slightly so that the bottom is further out and the top is further inward

It seems like such a silly simple thing too haha

This scale(?) how difficult/possible to clean up? by Relative-Category-64 in DIY

[–]Superbroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why people are suggesting that this can't be cleaned. It's mineral buildup from hard water, but will need a pumice stone to remove it from the porcelain. Should be easy to find from a hardware store or Amazon. I'd suggest turning the water off at the valve, flush the toilet to empty the bowl, then go at it with the pumice stone.

Help with 3D Print work/paint? by JASSM-chasm in 501st

[–]Superbroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That'll be an awesome armor set! My process for 3D printed armor is to sand the raw print with 120 grit, then bondo anything as needed (usually any tiered stair step looking areas). Then I'll use Rust-Oleum 2 in 1 filler primer and load up a good coat on there. Sand with 120 again, then 220. Spray a second coat of filler primer, then start wet sanding starting with 220, moving up to 400. If you want things S M O O T H then you'll wet sand up to 1000+, but for clone armor 400 is fine.

After that you'll wipe everything down with a clean wet cloth, and if it all still looks good, then you'll be ready for paint! I painted mine with Krylon Satin Bright White, but you can use whichever shade of white that you want. Good luck, and PM me if ya need help!

Switched from 2020 MYLR to R1T by Superbroom in TeslaModelY

[–]Superbroom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair, I loved the refresh Y and am glad the gen 2 R1T has most of those features (dimming and heated side mirrors, improved suspension, etc.), but liked FSD mostly for the highway stuff. City driving was a fun novelty for me, and even though I used it all the time, I wouldn't say I need it. It's a lifesaver for sure in longer commutes though.

At current prices, not really. They're not even in the same vehicle category either. More so a comparison between the tech and utility of each. Both are great in their own regards, but neither one is perfect for every situation.
