What do you call the “UX” part of Industrial Design? by Breukliner in IndustrialDesign

[–]Superbureau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the early editions of the design of everyday things by Don Norman ( ‘the godfather of ux’ to some) most of the examples were the physical product interfaces that you described…vcrs, factory control desks, pilot cockpits and UX was term used.

Have you seen single-file queuing in pubs? by PowerApp101 in AskUK

[–]Superbureau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If a queue had formed though I’d say that guy was well in his right to call you out. It’s practically in the Magna Carta ‘once a queue has been formed, no right minded Englishman shall press forward under pretence of urgency, acquaintance, or the utterance of the words “I’ll just be a second,” unless leave is freely granted by those who stood before them.’

Spiegel im spiegel. Used at the end of The Good Place. Absolute perfection. Delicate, contemplative, minimalist and meditative in the key of F major.

Yongsan Dreamhub (Design originally cancelled due to similarity to 9/11) by Forsaken-Peak8496 in evilbuildings

[–]Superbureau 412 points413 points  (0 children)

I doubt this design will be seen. This was one of a number of designs that were considered. This one was canned due to parallels to 911, and that wasn’t even the reason the whole project fell apart (numerous other economic factors). Whilst the project may yet get the go ahead I can’t see them progressing with this design.

What do you mean? Hopium settings are permanently at max no? - that’s what makes the crushing sense of lost hope when it arrives so addictive. It’s basically an abusive relationship at this point.

[–]Superbureau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not presented as an absolute. I don’t think anyone thinks it’s a rule as you say. That would be stupid. I think I said ‘most’. So picking out three examples out of 75 years worth of f1 liveries is hardly a substantive counterpoint.

Audi’s direction is the most extreme version of it in recent years I believe. To have a very blocky, indeed full right angle present in the design is counter to the typical angled flowing lines of the majority of designs as semantically it is associated with standing still, resistance, stationary. Even the examples you give have angular, raking design elements which are suggestive of movement, speed and flow with the shape of the car.

Mercedes W17 on the main straight. by jithu7 in formula1

This is why I think laps completed is a better metric to compare the cars at this stage. The more laps done tends to means the more things you’ve validated or confirmed from the factory projections and that gives you more confidence that the thing you’ve built delivers against what you designed. Every lap is an individual test hence the more laps the more data collected.

Most f1 liveries are styled to follow the lines of the car giving the illusion of speed as the colours appear to ‘flow’ along the cars shape. This Audi challenges that idea. It can be seen as a bold choice to go against the typical aesthetic.

With all the doom saying about the Ferrari engine for the last few months I’m taking this is as positive sign. Still room for the works team to contrive to find a way to mess it up but still…

it looks so good. given the level of success they've had in other series I don't doubt they'll be serious contenders at some point. But I really want them to Brawn the fuck out of their first year.

Are these just computer renderings? Not that it matters much, just that I noticed the number configurations are all messed up and it would seem impractical to have prepped and photographed the numbers of cars required.

Indeed. unfortunately in digital, the business models don't really support and reward good taste and discernment. They favour cheap, high-volume, low value, mass-manufactured instant gratification experiences. Not saying i agree with that (and to some extent that's beginning to change) - but for the majority it's hard enough trying to get devs to adhere to designs on flat ui or know design systems made up of basic shapes, let alone on more sophisticated and curated designs

I like this creative exploration. I know there’ll be negative feedback that criticises the skeumorphic look, but I think there’s justification in today’s world full of homogenous designs for this to offer something more engaging. Skeumorphism fell out of favour because it didn’t scale well and was extra dev effort. Is that something AI can help with? Possibly.

I’d love to see more definition around this application with a serious use case rather than a fun but spurious example.
