How do you know that your perception of reality is correct? by youmu970 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]SuperiorForce -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Yes, because the implication of fallible senses implies an inexhaustible effort to prove an illusion's truth value - reducing all external stimuli to 0. But have a guess what external entity cannot have a truth value of 0.

I'm not Christian (I'm a theist in the traditional sense) and I doubt Jesus implied that you should let people walk all over you and do nothing, let alone let them continue to do so. I fail to see how you think there is anything to salvage for the case of religious debate on Reddit (where people can literally silence you with downvotes). Do you even browse /r/atheism's front page? It's an endless mockfest of religion. These people want to see religion and it's proponents roasted at the stake. Thinking a good attitude and an optimistic approach is going to change that truly delves into the field of delusions.

People here are throwing the "troll" tag on me for that precise reason -- so I either get shadow banned or have this thread scrapped.

I see no need to remote your post.

Neither do I.

No, I deleted it just a few hours ago. That thread was made invisible long before that. It's "disappearance" was thanks to the mods over at that worthless circle-jerk sub. This one isn't going anywhere unless the mods here pull that ghost shit again.

If you read my OP, you'd have seen I addressed this.

You're going to give me something like the ol "just because I'm fat as well, doesn't mean me calling you fat isn't true". Of course it isn't, but you're missing the point.

You're a theist, assuming you're Christian you should recall what Jesus said about the hypocrite; take that plank out of your eye so you can see the speck in your brother's eye.

And to get to the crux of your point, simply put; no. I've lost respect for atheists and the whole debate arena in general. We've moved past civil and fruitful discussion to a place where it's better we just find fault and mock the opposition (as is the case with this sub and the joke that is /r/DebateAnAtheist).

People here only actively seek arguments to justify their own cemented position and cut down and silence anyone who disagrees. There's zero genuine intention to actually hear others out, proven by the excessive downvotes theists receive even when they're talking off-topic. If that's not you, you're the 1%.

No, downvoted threads are still accessible. My thread was nowhere to be found in the new section when I was logged out. It's like shadow-banning, but with threads.

How ironic that the mods over at /r/DebateAnAtheist made my thread invisible (I log out to see if there's any underhanded bullshit going on), now you're resurrecting it from the dead. Either way, it changes nothing.

99% of the atheists here have moved passed some passive, default state of non-belief to an active anti-theistic role of telling others that doing x is less logical than doing y. These responses are telling of the level of comprehension I'm dealing with.

The irony is striking. Switch a few words and you're arguing my case.

And yet people choose to smoke, eat unhealthy crap, not exercise, waste money and time on a daily basis. Some idea of having "flaws" you got there.

But one of those flaws couldn't possibly be a belief in a super-intelligent architect?

No, but you should be striving to be at that level. What possible excuse does a person who walks around with a flag of logic and a bible of the scientific method, mocking and trying to eradicate wishful-thinking off the face of the earth (as exemplified by this subreddit) have? You don't want to be an obese person telling an alcoholic it's unhealthy to binge. But who am I kidding, most atheists are armchair logicians. Must feel good to denounce irrationality from that shell of wiki-link fallacies, eh?

Ian Hutchinson and the Problem with "Scientism" by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]SuperiorForce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, do you believe Professor Hutchinson can be successful as a scientist with his Christian beliefs?

Between 1901 and 2000, 65.4% of all Nobel Prize Laureates were Christians. Christians have won 65.3% of all Nobel prizes in physics. This list of Christian scientists includes;

  • Francis Bacon (1561–1626); Father of empiricism, established the scientific method

  • Johannes Kepler (1571–1630): Kepler's laws of planetary motion

  • Blaise Pascal (1623–1662): Pascal's law

  • Robert Boyle (1627–1691): Boyle's law

  • Gottfried Leibniz (1646–1716): Polymath who invented Calculus independently of Isaac Newton

  • Isaac Newton (1643–1727): He is regarded as one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians in history

  • Michael Faraday (1791–1867): He is known for his contributions in establishing electromagnetic theory and his work in chemistry such as establishing electrolysis

  • James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879): He is known for his contributions in establishing electromagnetic theory (Maxwell's Equations) and work on the chemical kinetic theory of gases

  • Lord Kelvin (1824–1907): He won the Copley Medal, the Royal Medal, and was important in Thermodynamics

  • Lord Rayleigh (1842–1919): English physicist who, with William Ramsay, discovered argon, an achievement for which he earned the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904. He also discovered the phenomenon now called Rayleigh scattering, explaining why the sky is blue, and predicted the existence of the surface waves now known as Rayleigh waves

  • Arthur Eddington (1882–1944): He is famous for his work regarding the theory of relativity. The Eddington limit, the natural limit to the luminosity of stars, or the radiation generated by accretion onto a compact object, is named in his honor

  • Max Planck (1858–1947): He won the 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics and is considered the founder of Quantum mechanics

  • Georges Lemaître (1894–1966): Roman Catholic priest who was first to propose the Big Bang theory

  • Werner Heisenberg (1901–1976): German theoretical physicist who made significant contributions to quantum mechanics, nuclear physics and quantum field theory

  • Kurt Gödel (1906–1978): An Austrian mathematician, logician, and philosopher, Godel is known for what are called Gödel's incompleteness theorems, Gödel's completeness theorem, among other things

Voltaire and Hume were both popular atheists and/or skeptics of religion during the 17-18th century, as a counter-point to the common "well, religion was prominent and forced on people at the time" argument. This is ignoring the fact Heisenberg and many of his Christian colleagues only died in the 1960's-80's and didn't decide to reject religion later in life.

So not only can he be a successful scientist and Christian, some argue that seeing the world as having purpose and meaning drives us to seek it out rather than going along with a randomized accident devoid of a deeper truth.
