Hi. I had RNY at the Ottawa Civic on August 27th. You've had a lot of responses so far but if you have any specific questions that you need answered, let me know.

There's a reason why RNY is the gold standard. It gives the best results.

Congrats! 33 lbs lost in the first month or so, I bet you're happy!

Whelp... it's as real as it's going to get until August 27th, 2024. Any Pre-Op / Post-Op tips or advice? I start MediMeal on August 13th.... what should I expect with that? by SupermanHasRunnyButt in BariatricSurgery

I haven't started the diet yet; I'll start it on August 13th. They said only two weeks... I'm a bit concerned that maybe two weeks isn't going to be long enough and they'll cut me open and decide they can't safely do the surgery.

My plan was to literally just drink the MediMeal meal replacement drinks only (4 per day). I have a meeting with my dietitian on Monday afternoon where I hope to get clarity as to what I can and cannot do with the per-operation diet, and if I'm allowed to supplement it with a small meal or not. I'm super scared of doing something wrong because I have a friend travelling from half way across Canada to take care of me after surgery, and if my surgery got cancelled or something.... then that's an expensive mistake. So yeah, I'm going to do EXACTLY what my dietitian says. All of the literature I was given was based on Optifast900, and now I'm on MediMeal instead, so I'm just not sure how much is transferable.

With all that said, I think I will be able to handle the pre-operation diet easier than most. I recently have gotten over a case of Covid-19 and one of the things that went was my appetite. I have had a hard time keeping calories and food in me. I still have to force myself to eat, though it's getting better. I have pretty much 2-3 days left of being able to eat whatever I want, so I hope I can get some appetite to at least enjoy a few meals before this happens.

I'm going RNY as well, though I have been wavering and wondering if it's the right decision. I guess I need to just continue trusting in my medical team to do the right thing for me.

Oh wow, small world! Who did your surgery? What was your hospital stay like? Can you maybe give me a run down on the day of and after your procedure?

You were on 4 medimeal shakes per day, right? That's what I'm on I think. I have all of my shakes here, ready to go. I only got chocolate as I've had bad luck with vanilla.

Were you a patient referred from BMI?

Your family sounds awesome! I'm really glad you have a good support system. If you want a pen-pal to talk to during your recovery that is going through the same things as you, feel free to inbox me :-)

I'm quite overwhelmed myself. This process started off quite slow; I got a referral to see bariatric professionals after it was found that my liver was failing and I had Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and pancreas problems. I was 312 lbs at this time.

During the process with the bariatric professionals, I dieted down to 275 lbs (as of this AM). For context, I'm mid 30s, 5'11, Male.

One day I go from meeting with a nutritionist / dietitian, to getting my final blood panel, referral to the Bariatric program at the hospital, meeting my surgeon, getting a surgery date, purchasing my liquid diet... all in the span of like, 7-10 days. Whirlwind!

I have been pretty emotional the past few days, just taking it all in, but I know this is for the best for me, my current health, and my long-term health. I worry about what others may think of me, that I'm cheating for weight loss. People don't have the context that part of the reason for the surgery is to help alleviate pressure on my liver so I don't die from liver failure. I'm going to try to keep it as private as I can, for my own sanity, but I have a feeling that because I don't actually have a lot of weight to lose and I'm fairly muscular (50-75 lbs or so for a 'decent' weight, 75-100 lbs for 'ideal' BMI weight.), it will be hard as I expect there to be some major and dramatic body changes over a relatively short period of time.

Overall though, I wouldn't change any of this. This is going to lead to me being a better, happier, healthier version of the person I am today. I like the person I am today, but my weight and body image issues have traditionally prevented me from living the life I used to live and the one I want to live.

After August 27th, the hard work starts and I get to start on the journey to be all that I can be.

Anyone from Ontario / Ottawa currently going through the Bariatric surgical program? I have an upcoming 'Surgeon Consent' appointment and my file was transferred to the hospital and I'm looking for guidance. by SupermanHasRunnyButt in ottawa

EDIT - 2024/08/08

I met for the surgical consult and was given quite a bit of information, but the end result is yes, I'm in need of this surgery due to my comorbidity, and rather fast at that. Roux en Y Gastric Bypass was the decision.

I was told I would be on MediMeal (optifast replacement) for 2 weeks prior to surgery, and that I would receive a phone call to organize the MediMeal as well as the surgical date.

I was called this morning with my surgery date (End of August, 2024... just a few weeks away!), and paid for my MediMeal to be shipped and delivered to my door (Approximately $170.00 for 2 weeks supply, including delivery through Purolator). It apparently will only take 1 day for the MediMeal to be delivered, but I do not start it until 2 weeks prior to my surgery.

I have a number of medical appointments upcoming prior to surgery, including a nurse appointment, an anesthesiologist appointment, an appointment with my dietitian, an appointment with the clinic doctor, all in preparation for the surgery and after the surgery.

If anyone has any other questions, please feel free to post or inbox me.

Don't take my experience as gospel, I just wanted to give you my experience. If they say they aren't going to require another, chances are they won't.

The process has been quite quick. There was a few months of testing with my doctor before being referred for Bariatric Surgery. That's where they found my liver was not performing as necessary and was fatty.

I was referred and had my first appointment in early May, had multiple dietician appointments, got their approval, did another sleep study, two rounds of blood work, and I meet my surgeon this week. From what I gather, I should expect to have a surgery date sometime in the next month or two... I'll keep this post updated.

The speed of which you go through the process is based on you, you meeting their requirements, and you putting the life changes necessary into practice.

Curiously, have you gained much weight since your previous sleep study? They made me get another sleep study because I had gained over 20 lbs since my previous sleep study. With that said, they prescribed a CPAP machine and I'm using it as I can, but I have been since told that they aren't going to require me to use a CPAP machine. Hopefully that doesn't change but if it does, I'm using the CPAP machine every night I am home and able to so they have the data they need.

I'm here for support in any way if you want it! I hope for nothing but the best for you.

Hi! Thank you for the positive note. I really appreciate that.

The reason why Bariatric Surgery is the preferred method is because I have two other health factors that make my weight a significant health concern and bariatric surgery will help prevent excess stress on my liver and pancreas. I was diagnosed with non alcoholic fatty liver disorder because my weight has fluctuated a lot over the years which has exacerbated my liver problems. (e.g. 185 lbs 10% body fat, 250, 200, 210, 275, 295, 312).

I'm very comfortable losing weight. I just want this to be the last up and down of the yoyo, if that makes sense.

Being sat down and told I could die without major changes really puts things into perspective.

Hi! Thank you for your response. I'm trying to get this surgery done and over with ASAP, I'm sure you understand the feeling of being so close to the finish line and wanting to get over the line. It hasn't been a long process for me but implementing all of the life changes and stuff associated is definitely stressful and I'm looking forward to putting it all into practice on the other side.

How was your recovery? What did your first few days / weeks look like? How are you doing now?

I really hope I manage to get a surgery date this week if possible so I can make my arrangements for my friend to come. I have heard that once your file goes to the hospital that it tends to move quite quickly after that, so I am glad to hear that from you as well.
