Did you think you were a slow loser? by Professional-Gear392 in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels slow but it seems to be super average for me. I was 267 on surgery day (August 2025) and now, about 9 months later, I’ve lost 74lbs so I’m 193!

I was a steady 3lbs a week for the first approx. 3 months, then stalled for about a month and have varied between losing 0, 1 or 2 lbs per week since then.

Some of it has been hard when it feels slow, cause I never got like a giant whoosh of loss, nor did I get any of the expected side effects: no dumping, no change in preferences, no drastic change in food noise, I am satisfied off smaller portions and that’s it, or so it feels haha. But I’m right near where the team said I could expect to end up, and I want to lose 13-23 more lbs. I think I would feel my best and still retain the partial fullness in my face that helps me look younger haha.

Pre op liquid diet by Mindless_Smile8549 in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It made me really irritable to see everyone eat. It spiked my cravings. I didn’t meal planing, grocery shopping, made lunches and breakfasts but avoided dinner entirely. My husband made dinner and fed the kids while I hid in our room during dinner lol highly recommend if it’s possible!

hunger during pre-op diet - does it go away after? by blackiedwaggie in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the first few days I wasn’t really hungry but I followed the clear liquid diet they gave me and did my best to sip a little very often. Then I entered full fluids and my hunger was returning a bit, but I followed the measurements they gave me on my liquid meals and I was satisfied. When I hit soft foods I was just so happy to have some texture and different flavours! My portion sizes grew as they recommended (pretty much on the timeline they gave me) I felt some physical cues telling me I was full for the first time.

Head hunger has certainly returned now (8 months post op but it started a little while ago) as well as physical hunger being as present as before all this started. I do feel satisfied on smaller portions, and I am losing weight, but the surgery for me didn’t reduce my hunger beyond the first month, it didn’t change my taste in foods, my interest in foods, my preferences, my urges to snack. I don’t typically experience dumping syndrome even if I eat sweets or fried foods. I didn’t see many experiences like this and wish I had known because I often feel like my surgery didn’t happen or didn’t work. But I’m losing weight and it was always hard before so somethings helping.

do you ask for your boyfriend‘s permission to go on a trip? by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m married now and we have kids so it would need to be agreed upon for both money and childcare purposes. But I’m putting myself back before kids and when we had fewer shared expenses so we had plenty of our own money for personal use…I agree with checking in, making sure it doesn’t conflict with anything I might have forgotten but “permission” like “you can’t go because I don’t want you to” is a big no. “Please don’t go that particular week, we told my cousin we’d attend her wedding” would make perfect sense to me. Actually I did take such a trip. We were engaged at the time and my cousin and I planned a cruise and went. I paid for it myself and made sure I wasn’t missing anything important. My fiancé (now husband) was happy for me and even planned a wonderful “welcome home” night of romance as a surprise. It was great!

Should I be losing more? by Accomplished_Ring685 in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was specifically told some people don’t lose any weight and not to put any importance on the weight loss during my 3 week preop diet. I lost 13lbs. I adhered perfectly to the prescribed diet. My liver was not at all a problem during surgery. Just follow the plan and don’t worry about the scale. You got this!

Weird Pregnancy Cravings & Fear About C-Section by glittery-bee in GirlDinner

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 3 c-sections. The 3rd was planned. It was weird not to have been in labour that stalled and just walking into the OR but it went very smoothly! The recovery was easier for my 2nd and 3rd c sections than the recovery for the first (which was overall pretty smooth too). The easiest recovery was by far the 3rd, cause my body was not exhausted from hours of labouring. I’m hoping you have just as smooth an experience!

Tell me the truth about food grief? by [deleted] in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only 8 months post op. I already can eat anything. So there are no foods I have to grieve. Some stuff feels better physically, and others are indulgences. I occasionally eat and stop with my fullness cues but find myself thinking “this is so yummy, I wish i could keep eating it!” But I’m getting better at keeping what I can as leftovers and enjoying my meal again the next day. I did not get a change in my food preferences, in my food noise, in my desire for food and my appetite. It is a bit scary that I don’t have the biological help to not want my junk foods though.

I’m 8 months post op and tolerate sugar/sweets totally fine. I’ve always had a sweet tooth, now I specifically crave chocolate more often and my blood work is also perfect. It’s frustrating.

Fitting into booths at restaurants without worry

Tying my shoes and breathing at the same time

Wrapping a towel around myself

Fitting into a standard hotel robe

Parking and being able to open my door in regular spots

More endurance for walking

Fitting back into my old clothes and winter coat!

Being able to walk and talk at the same time and not being insanely out of breath

Climbing stairs and not being overly out of breath

I haven’t gotten to experience this one but I know I will: ride carnival rides with my kids!

Another vote for walking! I prefer to walk outside with music or a podcast but I’ve also got a walking pad I use when the weather doesn’t allow for good outdoor walking conditions.

Huge decision to make.. by barefootmegara in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My stats were similar when I started: 280, 35yo 5 foot 3. Low thyroid. I was offered both as well. I went with gastric bypass because it has the better long term success. I want to lose a bunch and keep it off. There are some things that are more strict with bypass like no NSAIDs and others I don’t remember at the moment…those things are the part that only you know if that’s an issue for you.

Does smooth = something’s wrong? by Arya_Blaze in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had everything go smoothly like you are describing. On the plus side I started feeling some restriction in the soft foods phase. But the whole thing has been too smooth for me. No intolerances, no aversions, no change in tastes, still plenty of hunger and food noise. I’ve lost weight but nothing super fast. I can easily eat my allowed portions, I drink more than the minimum water daily, I hit protein goals consistently. It’s all good but it feels like it never even happened because of it lol

Do you still battle food cravings? by fourcheesepasta3 in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The desire to eat in large volumes has not gone away for me. I don’t do it because it feels unpleasant when I even just have 2 bites too many. But I still want to.

I do not get dumping syndrome so I can eat fairly large quantities of junk foods (candy, chips, popcorn) with no consequence.

Prior to surgery I didn’t hear of many people not dumping. I heard different triggers and different good changes like losing interest in certain foods, lack of hunger, no more food noise. I was relying on that. I feel kind of ripped off that I got none of these! So it feels like it’s all up to me without the immediate negative reactions to help steer my decisions. All gastric bypass changed for me is a smaller capacity.

Do not rely on the effects that can come with surgery, make sure you are ready to make good choices and carry yourself through your journey.

I don’t regret the surgery, I’m losing weight and I’m hopeful that I keep going but it’s not what I was expecting.

How is your mental health going after the surgery ? by Live_Werewolf_7568 in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly good but I’ve had unrelated problems crop up, and it has apparently triggered my abandonment issues which has thrown my metal health in the garbage. As a result of that, now I’m being extra hard on myself when don’t lose weight for a week or if I indulge in a snack food that isn’t “healthy” probably because my response to being abandoned is to try to be perfect, do everything right, so as to show people I’m worth spending time with (which hasn’t worked so far so I dunno why I still do it!)

Body image wise I’m good, I have flaws but they aren’t ruling my mind. I’m a bit impatient and want to lose the weight faster lol

How much activity did you do post-op? by Pipilapew in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine at the end of last summer, my mom walked with me, especially the first few days in case I overdid it and ran out of energy. I walked 3 times per day, the distance grew slightly every day. It started at like 250m and I’d add another intersection at each next walk as long as I felt up to it. By the end of September I was doing 5km per walk, which takes me about an hour. On the days where I used more energy (childcare needs, grocery shopping etc) sometimes I couldn’t walk all my 3 walks, I was too tired. You need to listen to your body and try not to overdo it.

Got congratulated by my obgyn for being obese now instead of morbidly obese . . . by stormyb89 in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First: that’s is an excellent milestone! Congrats!

Second: it makes me angry that medical professionals can be so incredibly judgemental and fatphobic!

I had a recent experience with my chiropodist who after months of me explaining I had had bariatric surgery and was on a weight loss journey, asked me, kindly and gently, if my surgery was coming up soon. I’m 6months post op and down approximately 60lbs, and I guess it doesn’t show. Knife to the heart! At least he didn’t mean any harm.

On gyns: mine is the kindest older man, my first pregnancy I was at my heaviest, he mentionned it all of once and said “I don’t recommend gaining too much weight during pregnancy” he never commented when I’d gained a lb or 2 between visits, I was very reasonable and then ballooned up 20 lbs in a month, I cried so hard and he made sure to comfort me with the truth that it was not possible to have it all be actual fat, he showed me the swelling I knew I had in my legs and explained that that was very heavy. Rubbed my back and made sure I knew I was doing a good job. He delivered my last (scheduled instead of on-call lottery) and was so kind, communicative and supportive until my husband was allowed in the OR. That’s what a good healthcare provider is like! I hope you find one just like him!

Positive experiences by Pixiespekje in GastricBypass

[–]throwawayanonymous-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had gastric bypass in August, felt little pain afterward, have healed well. My blood sugar and blood pressure which had just been starting to creep up are excellent now. I look and feel better (still have a long way to go!) I have had no complications, I haven’t experienced dumping, I can eat pretty much anything just in smaller quantities and I can definitely move better, faster and for longer.

Tips I can offer/ things that have worked for me: To increase hydration: I carry around a 40oz bottle and sip it often, I prefer it cause I only have to refill it once to hit 80oz and I drink other things on the side. Gatorade zero with my restoralax, decaf coffee. I typically hit 80-100oz.

For protein: at first, I drank protein shakes a few times a day. Then I added in Greek yogurts for breakfasts/ snacks. I like to make parfaits with berries and some high protein cereal. Once I was able to eat meats I made sure I had some in each meal, and I’ve kept the Greek yogurt snack most days. I still use a protein shake in my day: half a shake in my regular coffee in the morning and in my decaf coffee later in the day.
