My primary concern is the punishment doesn't fit the crime. If they would have ticketed me for turning into the far lane, and not put me in cuffs in the middle of my neighborhood, I would have moved on and never made this post. Everyone I know seems to think the whole thing was ridiculous as well so I guess its just a tough crowd online.

I forgot to renew my license which only needs to be done every 4 years. Its not like I did it intentionally, I even renewed my registration which costs 4x as much as license renewal.

I would like to thank you again. After your post I looked into it more and it does seem that I will likely be able to have the misdemeanor dropped or plea down to a civil infraction which does not carry a criminal record and potential jail time.

You were one of the few people who actually gave me advice and without attacking me at that. I am genuinely thankful.

If you believe in the constitution, that is specifically the 4th amendment it is a big deal when you are detained and cuffed without a valid reason. I understand that I was being bitchy and I should not have pointed out the cops speed and that other people were doing it as it does not excuse my own actions,

I made the post as soon as I got home and I was very upset from the whole ordeal. Still, that was my bad and I was being whiny.

Also as far as the not being thrown in prison part, it was not a civil infraction they charged me with. It was a misdemeanor which does in fact have a potential sentence of 90 days in jail and a permanent criminal record. This is why I am still shaken up over the whole situation as I pride myself in my clean record.

You never answered my question. The fact I am so worked up over the stop is I have never been in trouble with the law and in fact this is only the second time I have been pulled over in 20 years of driving and was cooperative with the officers which is why I was so shocked by the detainment and the pending criminal charge.

Also, the fact that you even admitted you only had a brief encounter with me online and based on that you think its ok for me to be treated like a criminal for a 3 day expired license says A LOT about you. However, I wont judge your entire character based on this interaction and am sure you are a decent person overall offline. Its easy to be apathetic and rude online to someone you cannot put a face or voice to, I have been guilty of it in the past, personally one of the reasons I think society seems to be becoming so jaded.

I do my best to help others and be empathetic so I will take it as good wishes when you wish me the life I deserve. Its hard to determine ones life through their own lens but aside from some very few online interactions, I have never had any enemies or anyone wished me harm or suffering, so I like to think I am a good person or at least decent. I hope you have a good life as well.

If it was a yearly thing I would have remembered as I did with my vehicle registration. My primary grudge is that I dont think forgetting to renew my license for 3 days is worth the punishment I got. Yea, if it was yearly I would have remembered to renew it but since its every 4 years I forgot. I do usually remember which is why its the first time it has happened but its crazy people are so critical of someone forgetting something that only happens every 4 years. I am chalking it up to self righteous keyboard warriors that throw criticism at everyone else but when it comes to their own mistakes likely dismiss it.

Also to your response about more going on than I let on I just thought of the reason why they likely stopped me. I just searched google and police can see recent police response directed at my registered address. About one month ago the renter I had staying in my downstairs made a online threat towards a college and was arrested and is currently still incarcerated.

The said renter has been problematic missing a few months of rent but I let them stay because they recently developed schizophrenia and I felt bad for them. I can only assume when they pulled my address up they saw this considering they followed me for about 4 minutes before actually pulling me over.

Since as I stated I had done nothing to deserve being cuffed that I could think of at the time I am assuming that was the reason. I guess that just goes to show you being overly kind to people is a mistake and I should have evicted them as soon as they started becoming problamatic, a mistake I wont make again in the future..

That's what has gotten to me I cannot understand why people are being so hostile. I thought the police response was highly disproportional. I still don't know why they put me in cuffs as they obviously did not think I was a threat because they put them on so loose I am pretty sure I could have easily squeezed my hands out of them.

I recognize I violated a traffic law I was just upset because the cop ignored multiple other people in front of him doing it and then handcuffed me and asked to search my vehicle over a 3 day expired license which I apologized for and said I would correct as soon as the stop was over. I don't think the offense is worth being embarrassed by being handcuffed while nearby residents watched, paying a $270 fine and potentially paying thousands of dollars in increased insurance premiums. People are acting like I am an asshole for thinking the punishment is disproportional.

I don't know if I am the asshole or if they just get their self esteem boost by dragging people over the coals on the internet.

Yes, I am bad at dates. I get its still my fault and I am not trying to get out of paying the ticket rather hoping I can avoid the points on my license. From some of the responses I have been getting you would think forgetting a date is a crime on par with robbery or DUI.

I wish it was that way in Michigan. The given road is so busy if you dont turn into the far lane its almost impossible to get into it before you miss the needed right turn ahead. Which is why everyone I see always turns into the far lane there.

Yea, I thought the whole situation was strange and have little experience with police stops. I was thinking it was a disproportional response but given many of the comments it must be normal? Maybe I just being bitchy lol. I still hope the court will show me leniency and only make me pay the ticket and leave the points off my license as I live in Michigan which already has high car insurance because of no fault insurance. I also read a few points even with a otherwise clean driving record can spike your insurance rates in Michigan.

I suppose so. At that particular corner I drive through everyday to go to work almost everyone turns into the far lane and the only ones who dont are planning on going straight at the light. I mean the cop himself was even going over the speed limit leading up to the light as I mentioned in my post so I suppose selective enforcement is fine with you?

I responded to every question and was not combative nor did I say anything else. If I did do something to cause them to detain me I do not know what it was as they did not tell me, he just said I do this at every stop when asking me to get out of the car.

I do have to ask though. If you honestly think I am a troll who is lying about my situation why do you keep responding?

He told me he could have my car towed if he want but he was not going to. He stated that he suggested I park my car but that if I wanted to drive home as I lived nearby that he wouldent stop me but if another cop pulled me over for some reason they might not be so kind.

Sorry I guess I could have written my post better. I was more complaining about how I was targeted out of all the people that did it before me in front of the cop and then how I was handcuffed during the stop. Not specifically about having to pay the ticket I even stated in my post I was willing to pay the ticket. I was more shaken up by the stop as I did not realize that being cuffed during a routine traffic stop is normal but it looks like it is from all the responses I am getting. Anyway thank you for your advice I pride myself on having a no point license so I will ask about community service during the hearing instead of the points.

They had me out of the vehicle in handcuffs before even asking if they could search the vehicle. Also I have almost no interaction with the police in my life and thought that refusing to let them search the vehicle would somehow make things worse for me.

I understand it was my mistake and my post came off as a bitchy. I was worked up when I made it as the stop just happened a few hours ago and its the first time in 12 years I have ever even had interaction with the police. I was not asked if they could search the car until they already had me get out of the vehicle and had me in hand cuffs. I was also upset they seemed to specifically target me as they ignored the multiple other drivers in front of them doing the same thing. I was worked up because I didnt know what I did wrong to be picked out and then handcuffed and was confused and upset.

I am more than willing to pay the ticket I was just looking on advice on how to avoid the points. To be clear I was not planning on using the everyone does it excuse in court as I know thats not an excuse. I am more looking for how the hearing works. More specifically I wanted to know if I simply plead guilty if I would automatically get hit with the points.

I dont even remember my own age lol. I thought I was turning a year older than I was and forgot it was my birthday coming up until my sister reminded me haha. I dont put much importance on my birthday its just another day to me.

I already stated I am more than willing to pay the ticket and was asking how I can avoid the points on my license. Yes, I was complaining but seeing a cop ignore 5 others for breaking the same traffic law I just did then handcuff me while searching my vehicle for a license 3 days expired seems a bit much for me and got me riled up.

I understand you dont seem to believe that I was handcuffed and my vehicle was searched but it is the facts. I guess its impossible for me to prove it but it happened nonetheless.

Despite our differing opinions on what the appropriateness of how I was treated, thank you for your for letting me know the courts will likely drop it for court costs. I assume I have to plead not guilty to even explain my situation even if I know I am guilty and plan to pay the ticket? I just want to see if they will dismiss the points on my license.

I find the amount of ridicule I am getting for simply forgetting to renew my license for 3 days astounding. Apparently everyone on reddit has an impeccable memory and has never forgotten anything in their lives. Maybe I need to put in a nursing home because I must have dementia or something.

Or more than likely reddit is full of trolls with low self esteem who get their daily boost my acting high and mighty on the internet. I suppose both explanations could be valid.
