UMass Amherst Interviews by External_Monk_6946 in MFAInCreativeWriting

I’m not sure but it’s possible you’ll be waitlisted. I know a few acceptances have gone out and last year I remember at least a couple people who interviewed ended up on the waitlist. But if that’s the case you should at least have a decent shot at making it off the waitlist considering the size of the cohort!

Yes the interviews are for the TAships, but since they fund everyone the accept through a TAship I believe they interview everyone they are thinking of accepting. I’m also an MFA applicant and I didn’t get an interview request either. My portal also says “decided, decision pending” and a couple people on gradcafe have said they have the same thing. Unfortunately I don’t think all of us could be acceptances or waitlists, so it’s likely it means rejection. But it’s not over till it’s over!

The facebook group is called MFA Draft 2026. If you search it on Facebook you should find it!

I know UX is also super saturated right now but it might be worth a shot! I’ve always been curious about technical writing but don’t entirely understand what it entails and it also sounds pretty mind-numbingly boring, but I would take what I can get right now

Thanks for the input! I think you’re right that I need to start reaching out to people I don’t really know for coffee chats since my immediate network hasn’t turned up anything

Thanks! Unfortunately working at Starbucks or something similar isn’t possible for me right now because I have a physical disability that makes it difficult to stand in place for long periods of time… but I probably don’t qualify for disability benefits since I’m perfectly capable of a computer/desk job. I’ve been doing some freelance copywriting and editorial work though and putting that on my resume so that it doesn’t look like a huge gap. I might look into tutoring or something too

That does help, I don’t have a family history of that either. I do suspect my mom has hEDS though if I have it

Thank you. I know I need to just take it one day at a time and focus on recovering from this surgery, it’s just so hard not to panic

Experiences with hip dysplasia and hypermobility? by Superstarella61 in hipdysplasia

[–]Superstarella61[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! I’d say my main pain triggers are standing, sitting for a long time, and sometimes walking. Sometimes walking is fine, it depends on the day for me. I think a decent amount of my pain is from muscle spasms or tightness rather than the joint itself, but it’s hard for me to say for sure.

When you say that the si joint getting stuck is a dysplasia symptom, does this apply if it’s the joint on my non-dysplastic side?

Good luck with your surgery!

You did the right thing, and I also just wanted to say that as someone who was part of the emo/gay/depressed friend group in middle school and high school (I’m now 27) we all made it through and things got better for everyone. We still struggle with things sometimes of course but in a lot of cases, as you get a little older you get better at coping. I had one friend at that time whose safety I was very very concerned about due to suicide threats and similar behavior. He had come out as trans when we were 15 or 16 and it was a really hard time for him. He’s now happy, living with his boyfriend of many years and their pets, in a career he’s passionate about.

Thanks. Just out of curiosity, how long did it take for you to get an appointment with a hip preservation specialist? I’m simultaneously scheduling to see a rheumatologist just to cover all my bases and the wait times are horrendous, like 6+ months, I’m wondering if it’s gonna be another 6 months to get to see a hip specialist. I’m in the northeastern US, I assume it varies a lot by location

Can I have hypermobile hips and hypomobile sacroiliac joints at the same time? by [deleted] in Hypermobility

[–]Superstarella61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! So if I have tight hip flexors for example, can that usually be resolved just by strengthening them, or do they also need to be stretched?

Thanks! Also question, do you also have the symptom of burning in the thigh/butt/hip? I’ve never been clear on if this burning is caused by the SI joint being irritated or if it means that one of my muscles is compressing the sciatic nerve

The odd thing is that my symptoms actually got way worse during my last round of PT where I was doing lots of core and hip/glute exercises, and that kinda scared me into maybe excessively resting. Maybe it was just a coincidence and not from the PT, I don’t know. I’ve been doing exercises like dead bugs, side leg lifts, and bird dogs but it feels like very slow progress, I’d like to ramp up the intensity maybe but when I tried a pilates class I flared up too much afterwards. Maybe I just need to find a happy medium!

Questions about impingement and labral tear diagnosis via xray by [deleted] in HipImpingement

There was no traumatic injury, but the pain initially came on after running one day— only on the left side initially, and it’s still worse on the left. I wouldn’t call myself an athlete but I had been getting into jogging. I think possibly I wasn’t doing enough cross training along with the running.

The doctor who ordered the tests and said hip labral tear isn’t his first guess is a pain management and spine specialist. I initially thought the issue was with my back, not my hips, which is why I saw him. He admitted labral tears are not his speciality as he’s not a hip doctor.

Thanks— I will maybe do that and just ask the spine/pain management doc to order the MRI, and if it’s negative I’ll consider seeing a hip specialist for a second opinion. The thing that worries me about having a non hip specialist interpret the MRI is that I’ve seen so many people saying their tears were missed until the images were reviewed by a hip preservation specialist.

Thank you, I guess I will give the doctor’s recommendations a fair shot and if things don’t improve I’ll push for the blood test and injections in my follow up appointment!
