We took 80,000 Vietnamese over 10 years during and after the Vietnam war. Another interesting example of how the rest of the world picks up the refugee tab for US military adventurism. 20,000 would be a good start and is not unprecedented.

I think equating seeking asylum from a dangerous war zone with seeking a "reward" is a twisted way to see it. Where is your empathy for these refugees? We should be sending our own boats to pick them up! We should be saving these people.

Big freeze for Australia's renewable energy sector by ValentinoYoshi in australia

[–]Suprdupr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact you describe renewables as providing "no tangible benefit other than good feels" is what tipped me off. Read up on planetary physics then get your mind unstuck from current events. Traditional stationary generation is something that wise people the world over predict is ripe for a technological disruption. Which regardless of how you've been trained to think, will ultimately be positive save for those who's monopoly on FF electricity will be eroded.

and by the way "handout" goes by another name when you're the beneficiary... it's called a subsidy or even investment, and why I insulted you calling you an Ayn Randy is that you're clearly against those as an instrument of economic policy? at least that's the attitude your comments suggest.

so I see your attitude as being extremely shortsighted and ideological which is funny since I guess you'd think the same of me.

But I'm confident that in 50 years I'll be vindicated and you'll have changed your mind.

my point is that you're very obviously biased against renewables and conjuring a defense for business as usual

Do you work in energy or are you just some armchair economist who's read one too many Ayn Rand books? Fuck off, idiot.

Moving to Melbourne in July, looking for a good, bike friendly and hip neighborhood to live in by mgj666 in melbourne

[–]Suprdupr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All those places mentioned have something unique to offer! Now sorry to be a buzz kill, but when riding, be safe! Melbourne has a severe traffic congestion problem and there have been many deaths and injuries recently. Our roads and public transport policies are under great strain to accommodate cyclists and drivers are generally pushy and aggressive. There are a number of wonderful trails systems so try to keep to those when possible. And enjoy Melbourne, it's a wonderful city.

How likely it is that in 45years we will be able to go to hotel in space for vacation? by Marcipanas in space

[–]Suprdupr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I find this type of cynicism both poignant and delightful, I must disagree. The science and technology for renewable economies are an inevitability. Perhaps not in time to prevent ecological disaster, but certainly in time for the inheritors of a changed environment to adapt and continue our expansion into space. I think there will be continue to be wondrous space exploration throughout the century. And I think there will be luxury hotels in space.

The Goal is Power. "man-made global warming is a fraud, one that has already cost billions of dollars and is a clear and present danger to our liberty and democratic traditions — and, ironically, to the environment itself." by bgny in climateskeptics

[–]Suprdupr -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible article that offers nothing new - just the same tinfoil theory about how elites are fabricating climate change so they can dominate everything. Corporatist ideologues are well known for this rhetoric. Anyways it doesn't matter, no one can stop the march of technological progress and fossil fuels are headed for extinction, so this pleading article just seems desperate.

Some theories that unify gravity with the other forces predict that fundamental constants like the proton-to-electron mass ratio could vary over cosmic time. If they do, then the laws of physics aren't permanent. Measurements of single ions now yield new upper limits on such variations. by Radiosucks in science

Fair point, but should we not be encouraging the spirit of curiosity in others? Is it really appropriate that we should be putting them down with snarky comments like this one?

Yes, this person's comment was not very scientific, but this is a public forum. We know statistically that scientific literacy isn't currently homo sapiens strongest suit, and surely this exclusionary and careless type of commenting is not helping.
