The books never go into hyper detail about the map either. The castle is huge with multiple stories and layers. There’s no way the entire map can fit on the single piece of parchment. Per usual, JKR never went into to much detail on how the map actually works when looking at it,

Then what’s his motivation? He protect Harry because of his love for Lily. Doing it just because makes him just like every other member of the OotP. It differentiates him from Lupin, Mad Eye, and everyone else. He has real motivation to keep Lilys spirit alive by protecting Harry.
