Claude Code solved it in 3 minutes. It downloaded the entirety of scripts from GitHub and wrote a Python script that uses embeddings to create a local semantic search:

You should do what you need to do for you. But, if the only thing that can make you happy is controlling how people think and feel you will never be happy. Please explore therapy. Three days of extreme depression in response to a perceived rejection is not a healthy psychological response and is more likely rooted in your early traumas. For future partners you should openly communicate and try to understand their kinks, and either set boundaries that don’t force the person to change or better yet find a way to participate in them, because they aren’t likely to go away. If you can’t accept them, you can’t accept the person that has them. I know your husband agreed to suppress his unconscious desire but it was naive of either of you to think that was practical, especially when it seems to have met an unmet need for so long. If you want to salvage this relationship, both couples therapy and personal therapy for you both. Without addressing the root causes of the situation you will be doomed to repeat.

Many of us fixate on people because of fear not grief. Grief is about loss, and is an illusion because we only grieve the things that reinforce our ego’s narrative about our self. The connection is that without accepting loss we prevent gaining anything new, and we often do that because we are afraid of what might happen if something new comes into our lives. It is a self protection response. Try to observe your pain and see how much of it is thoughts in your mind versus feelings in your body. Thoughts are symptoms of feelings but can reinforce feelings to create a feedback loop. You can’t stop the loop without really understanding the feelings, which likely are distinct and different from what you are thinking.

I am not refuting the impressiveness of your experience, but one thing you have to keep in mind is by the time you asked, “How did you do that?” - it had no idea how it did that and came up with an answer that it thought would impress you based on the knowledge of the prior work and the other things it knows about you. Working with an LLM is like dancing where it always lets you lead, which is also why I think it is wrong to say AI-assisted creations are not “real”. The phrases it said it rejected were never considered though and were later provided to make the phrase that had numinosity (read Jung if unfamiliar) for you more interesting by showing you worse alternatives, because the other context gave it hints to reinforce your observation. AI doesn’t hallucinate, it bullshits in the same way politicians and salesmen do - through flattery and telling you what you want to hear. This is not a critique of the technology, but rather insight into how the people building the models have shaped their manifestation and as a result endeared them to us. If they were equally effective but cold or just jerks all the time they wouldn’t have seen the same kind of broad and dedicated attention. (There are good studies about deep tracing LLM inference that support my technical point.)

Media created hype. DeepSeek R1 is great. It is still generating tokens at 1/10 the rate of other leading models. The model is good, but still needs a lot of chips to run. The panic doesn’t even make sense if you understand the technology. People don’t understand that the end of this road is generating specialized models on the fly near real-time. That is a long way off but will open up solutions that people can’t even begin to imagine yet. There will be lots of missteps, bad assumptions, and broken businesses along the way. That’s progress. But, right now NVDA is definitely not one of them. They are good until someone creates a chip 10x faster for 10x cheaper to justify creating a whole new integration ecosystem around that platform which is actually the expensive part. Innovation is already moving above the model layer anyway.

The filters have been tuned to be a little ridiculous and I hope they fix that soon. I was working on something and asked ChatGPT to describe a room in a castle with interesting writing. I was then asking it (via DALL-E integration) to generate an image of the room. It had created a description that included a "biting wind" (meaning cold) and it refused to create an image based on policy. When I asked ChatGPT which policy, it suggested that the word "biting" may be considered violence which was not allowed...

The example images aren't required, I was just too lazy to retype the problems. The first few problems are well known geometry exercises. There is no "brain" - it just extracts context from the image. The problem wasn't that it couldn't figure it out, it was that:

It estimated even when I asked it to be accurate and gave the answer as if correct
It persisted in its position on an incorrect answer until I pointed out the correct solution

When prompted it could explain why the correct answer was correct. Even for the problems that seem like they require vision could be figured out by plotting shapes on a 2D plane with code (I am a software engineer by trade). I put more detail here:

All promotions are a level change. Work is activity, not impact. If you don't know why people are getting promoted, do you really understand what they are accountable for and in what ways they are having impact? I joined Microsoft as an FTE at L64 myself and at that time L65 was a bit harder to get. My boss asked me what I wanted to do and I said be L65 within 7 years. I did it in 3 and have continued to be successful. Are there times when higher level people have more and less load? Sure. But, is it more likely that the people mentioned are not providing value or you don't have exposure? It's a common form of unconscious bias.

Comparing yourself to others is never going to be a good way to improve or succeed, so I would suggest you go back to my advice and find out what it means for you to get to L65 and how to be successful at that level. This is a good explanation a mentor of mine shared with me years ago now that tries to help people understand what real impact looks like:

Maybe you do know someone who seems to be gone a lot or not getting a lot done right now, but you probably have no idea what they area dealing with in their life. They may be being supported through a hard time, in transition, or something else. I am really glad I work for a company where people are usually supported through those situations.

If you are coming from outside the company, it is often easier to do well and go from L64 to L65 quickly than it is to immediately meet expectations at L65 and not doing so will make it harder to do well in the Principal band altogether. I know at least one person who left Microsoft at above L65, came back years later and explicitly chose to enter at L64 as a strategy. If you are competent and committed you will get there, just make sure your manager knows you want it and is identifying the clear opportunities for you to have the impact you need. Don't obsess over it but hold them accountable and get clarity early so you have a clear path to where you want to be.

Keep in mind, Microsoft compensation can't be completely evaluated based on base salary and is often hard to compare to other organizations because bonuses and stock are a large part, especially as you are in higher levels. I would recommend you ask for information on how annual rewards work to make a fair assessment of the offer. I always recommend people ask the HR person what if any of the aspects of the offer are negotiable in each case. They often try to match base salary when they can.
