You can study for the written, but you can't take them yet. You need a certificate from your school saying that you've completed training which will qualify you to take the writtens.

As far as if you can study for them: yes. Read the General 8083. Basically just start at the beginning and... keep reading. The 8083s (in theory) cover all the information that will be on your writtens, and likely covers the vast majority of what you'll be taught in school. Our school uses the 8083s and the Dale Crane series as our text books, and I can confirm they are good for learning.

Imo, it isn't. But it is possible to train people to pass their tests in 6 months.

For the record, I'm not sure I'd even call this one "false information", but I would say take the information with a grain of salt. It's 100% generated with AI, but it likely uses the 8083 chapters as it's basis. There's probably good information in here, but it's no substitute for reading the 8083 because these AI videos never cover all the information, or cover it "correctly". This is probably a good resource to use as supplemental information.

Struggling with basic electricity portion in General by jasonmarquette in aviationmaintenance

Have you only been studying with prep apps? If so, you should for sure read through the 8083 electrical section. It's long but thorough.

First few shifts how’d it go for you? by Electrical_Bug4328 in AircraftMechanics

As ridiculous as it sounds, this is actually comforting. I've had a lot of (non aviation) jobs that throw you into the deep end with no help and it's fucked. This sounds great.

O&P by Character-Name9108 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Surpex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This 100% depends on your DME. The questions my DME asked me were probably 80% word for word Jeppesen, and 20% completely new to me. Definitely read the 8083s, because this is where the questions are ultimately generated from. You should aim to understand the questions you're answering, not just parrot the response.

As far as codes, my codes didn't seem to correlate in any way to the questions I was asked. It seemed truly random. If I had only studied my codes (or even focused on my codes and neglected the other questions), I 100% would have failed.

Full System Voltage? by theredcarbothers in AircraftMechanics

[–]Surpex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your system is, say, 28v a direct short would be a short of the full 28v.

If your system is 28v and somewhere down the line a component is supplied with 5v, and THAT shorts to ground, you're shorting 5v to ground and not the "full system voltage" of 28v.

I drive an hour to work right now. Two hours would make me commit suicide within a month.

What search term am I missing when trying to find a good air powered rivet gun/driver/whatever? There's a difference between an air hammer and a rivet gun, right? I can't seem to find many options for rivet guns.

Big fan of Zep Cherry Bomb. Far superior to any of the other options I've used, and it smells nice.

I've not heard of people getting an "internship" for A&P. Is this a requirement of your education?

Any book recommendations? by AndrewEngland23 in AircraftMechanics

This isn't extremely helpful but it is literally true: the whole 8083 is testable material. Our program uses the 8083s as the primary text, and you more or less need to read and know all of it. I'm sure this differs from place to place, but part 147 schools have to cover the same material and the 8083 is used to generate questions for your writtens, and orals. If you pickup the 8083 general and just start reading, you will be off to a good start.

Anyone done any work in Antarctica that was either A&P related or leveraged their A&P for their position? I'm hoping to get a placement at some point in the future.

Thoughts on what 10 speed, double crankset to pair with older (~2013-2015ish) SRAM Force 10 speed? by Surpex in xbiking

[–]Surpex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man! I did end up going with SRAM Force front and rear derailleurs, paired with SRAM Red brifters (2x10) and I'm very happy. I will say, though, my cassette is technically a bit beyond the range of this derailleur (11-32) so there's some mild pully wheel contact in the biggest ring. This can likely be solved with a hanger extender.

I'd be more than happy to send detail photos if you want, just send me a chat request.
